Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear’s Daily Updates
○ Every day at 5pm people across the state of Kentucky turn on their televisions and tune in to Governor Andy Beshear’s daily update on COVID-19. For many this daily ritual has become a source of comfort and encouragement, a glimmer of hope. Every day for weeks Governor Beshear has come on TV to remind Kentuckians that their individual actions are powerful and their choices to follow social distancing guidelines during this crisis directly affect the other people in their communities, and reminds everyone that as “Team Kentucky” the state will get through the COVID-19 pandemic together. #DePaulHST391 -

Green Lights of Kentucky #1
(Pictured: Kentucky State Capitol) On March 21, 2020, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear asked Kentuckians to show green lights each night a COVID-19 fatality is reported — a show of solidarity and resilience that unites the Commonwealth. “Every night that I have to report a fatality, it’s a small thing, but we’re going to light the Kentucky Governor’s Mansion green. Green is the color of compassion, it’s the color of empathy. It’s also a color of renewal. According to my faith, when you pass from this world, your body is just a vessel and your soul moves to an ever better and more special place.” -

Social Distancing at Walgreens in Chicago’s Southwest Suburbs
Although many businesses have closed their doors due to COVID-19, pharmacies have kept theirs open. Essential workers, like pharmacists, store leadership, pharmacy technicians, and customer service representatives, have continued to work for their communities despite the potential risks to their health. As a part-time pharmacy technician, it is difficult to social distance while at work, as my job relies on interacting with my coworkers and numerous patients throughout the day. This sign serves to remind its viewer that even small errands during a global pandemic, such as picking up medications, may present a preventable health threat to all parties involved. *Walgreens Corporate; notice distributed to individual stores *04/08/2020; Posted in the pharmacy queue during Illinois’ Shelter in Place #DePaulHST391 -

Public Street art, New Jersey, USA
A great piece of modern art shared by the painter with the public and for the neighborhood in the midst of the pandemic. It’s a self-portrait, presumably, of the painter, showing him/her/they at work with with paint and brushes. It gives two messages: one, in the portrait, copy me and wear a mask to protect yourself and us and 2) the text, hang in there, meaning keep going, have faith in yourself, be strong, or similar friendly and uplifting sentiments. It’s a very common phrase in US late 20thc-2020 and we use it with friends. So it too, is advice, to try to stay emotionally well, and almost a hug. This is from NJ at the moment that it it is clear that New York City is the epicenter of suffering and death due to covid19 in the US and that means NJ because so many work in NYC. My friend saw it as she took a walk outside alone while “social distancing” and probably wearing a scarf over her face or a homemade mask. It’s great because the artist shared his/her/their work and feelings and it does make my friend in NJ and her friends all over and mine, happier. I am grateful for it. -

Cantor preparing for virtual Passover seder - Temple Emanuel, Dallas
Our congregation in Dallas, Temple Emanuel, put a huge amount of effort into creating a virtual seder. About 250 computers participated, probably about 500 people. Our clergy led, and congregants also participated by reading the Hagaddah. We don't have a collective congregational seder tradition, so this is an innovation for Covid-19. Our clergy, rabbis and cantors, put in a lot of effort organizing this. This picture is of one of our senior cantor. She has equipment at home now to lead virtual services, a reflection of the resources and effort it takes to keep a large congregation going through this time. -

Hidden Market
Today, unlike a week ago, the air was very clean and light. During the day I discovered that I ran out of cleaner and some food. Instead of going shopping with my family or friends I go alone. Limiting trips to the store has become normal for my parents and friends. Although I knew most of the supplies were out at some of the local markets I decided to call one of my friends. Using my cell phone I called my friend Malakar. Both of us talked about how we were laid off recently and didn't have much to do. We both discussed about how Mexico wasn't dealing with the pandemic very seriously. The president of Mexico gave a speech to reassure the public and remarked how they should treat it as a common cold. I remarked that Mexico has less ventilators for the sick than any given state in the U.S. Both of us sighed. Then I shared what I inferred. "If this keeps going until the summer the people in Mexico might come here for help." My friend shared the sentiment but also added that our borders would close long before the summer starts. During the summer temperatures in Arizona reach over one hundred ten degrees. If there are any surfaces outside the virus would be burned from the sun. He changed the subject to how the governmental loan for the small restaurant businesses are going to be in effect for 4/13/2020. Both of us agreed that we will have some money coming in from that and how the restaurants must employ us for seventy five percent of our regular hours or the loans must be repaid. After discussing what the next week would look like I asked him about any local markets I could find cleaners. Most of the paper goods and cleaning supplies were out at the local Food City and Fry's. Fortunately one of my friends pointed out a Halal Grocery store that had some cleaners and good bread still. Traveling to this store there was very little traffic. Most of their pita bread was gone but they still had some toilet paper. Most of the employees wore face masks and kept their distance. Inside there was a deli that had an assortment of fresh meats. Most of the prepacked food was still there. This place gives out punch cards if you're a regular customer. Inside there is also a restaurant that can make gyros and other lunch foods for a fair price. Thank goodness that there are reliable places like this in these trying times. -

Cases rising in NC.
In the triangle of counties in North Carolina, there have been 38 new cases of COVID-19. This means that North Carolina overall has over 3,000 cases as of April 1st, 2020. North Carolina has been at a stay-at-home order since March 30th. The attachment is a map created by David Raynor and specifies where the most abundant cases are located in North Carolina. This has caused great concern, like North Carolina, and many other places, are having shortages of essentials, such as bread, water, milk, and toilet paper. Grocery stores are limiting customers inside the store, and people are waiting over 3 hours to get their groceries. -
