A Classroom Frozen in Time
This is a picture of my classroom on April 16th, 2020. Our school in Nampa, Idaho officially closed at the end of the day on March 16th and I didn't return to my classroom until one month later. It was like I was stepping into a time capsule. My 'On This Day in History' board had been filled out for the next day by a student before we had learned that we would not be returning. The student also took it upon themselves to list "March 17, 2020 the first St. Patrick's Day with the virus." -

Hindu Nationalists Blame Muslims For India's COVID-19 Crisis
This article discusses the growing tensions between Hindu nationalists and Muslims in India. Hindu's have been blaming many of the problems in Indian society on Muslims and Christian missionaries, but this is another example of them attempting to place the blame on Coronavirus on Muslims. India is ripe for a coronavirus explosion in cases due to the large number of people in these packed together spaces. There are multiple false videos circulating through Whatsapp and other various social media sites like Facebook depicting Muslims spitting and distributing currency and attempting to spread the virus. This video is false. Additionally, there was a massive Islamic conference that helped spread the virus through different parts of the country which has enflared tempers and made the situation worse. On top of the pandemic, India needs to find a way to cool religious tensions or there will be even greater ramifications than the virus. For now, as NPR notes, India needs to focus on the response and figure out how to flag false information on Whatsapp and other social media. -

Grocery Store Shortages
This was a photo of my local grocery store pasta sauce isle on April 16th. I know I have probably seen a dozen photos of the same or similar situations, but this really made me think about not only how I took the availability of items for granted, but also the people who work there and their frustration as well. Many grocery store workers are experiencing frustration and dread at work because of shopper irritation and frustration over unavailable items. There were obviously several choices left, but not what I usually use. That made me reflect on how we as a society become so entrenched in our own routine that we often forget the challenges that others experience all over the world and the complete unavailability of necessities that we take for granted. Shortages are a challenge to all of us and this has made me far more respectful of that fact and all those that are impacted by them. -

“Cover Your Cough”: Work Safety at a Nursing Home in Burr Ridge, Illinois
While nursing homes play an integral role in the medical care for many elderly individuals, they also present a significant amount of risk during the time of COVID-19. The CDC has identified as those who are most at-risk for infection as people over 65, the immunocompromised, and residents at long-term care facilities. My mom, as the Senior Director of Resident Services, has often described her fear that one of her nurses, CNAs, or residents will contract COVID-19. In order to minimize risk, she relies on reminding nursing home staff and residents of the merits of practicing preventative care. These IDPH infographics provide helpful information to prevent the spread of the virus within a high risk community so that both workers and residents can stay as healthy as can be. *Illinois Department of Public Health; sheets arranged by my mother, Karen Miller, for the staff at her place of employment *04/16/2020; The day of the projected national ‘peak,’ according to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation on 04/07/2020 #DePaulHST391 -

Do I Need Haircut?
Here in Arizona, salons and barbers were initially designated as "essential services," but the day before all the members of our family were scheduled to have haircuts, they were ordered to close. This has left us with long unruly hair. Eli, shown here, has been growing his hair out, but it's never been this long. He now has a "man bun," for which we endlessly tease (though he wears it as a point of honor.). This question about what is essential and what is not, as well as how we handle such simple grooming as hairstyle have taken new meaning for us during the pandemic. -

Ohio Stay at Home Protesters or the Purge? Photo by Joshua Bickel
Many images from this pandemic are haunting: empty grocery store aisles, deserted national monuments, shuttered restaurants. But this image captured by Joshua Bickel takes the cake. Positioned from inside the Ohio Statehouse, Bickel snaps outraged protestors, chanting various cries against the governor and the Stay-at-Home orders that blanket the state. The people sport banal nationalistic tokens such as Trump hats and American flags, but no face-masks, an article that has come to epitomize civic and public duty in the weeks past. This image shows how not only has the pandemic spread across the nation, but so have doubts and nudges against authority from higher ups in the American government. Protests of this nature have not cropped up in other parts of the world nearly to the extent that they have swept the great USofA. Some point our anomalous trends to lack of leadership in Washington and lack of national unity in the midst of what can only be called a public health/economic/social crisis. Benedict Anderson's "imagined community" that pulls a nation together is simply falling apart as we cannot come together and unite under facts, science, and leadership at a time when we need it most. Bickel's image portrays an America that is not filled with communion and fraternity, but riddled with "hoaxes" and ignorance. Of course we are all wanting to return to our normal lives, but to go out and protest and participate in an activity that inherently prolongs our quarantine? Seems pretty un-American to me. -

This local Sikh chapter operates a community kitchen and has teamed up with other local partners to expand their reach since the outbreak. While they have always been in the business of helping the less fortunate, they have now begun to serve a whole line of others to include local medical workers and the elderly during this crisis. -

Adventures During the Epidemic
During the pandemic, we could only stay home every day. We could not go out at all, and every day is so boring. We studied and played on our phones a lot, but even now playing on our phones is boring. What I remember vividly is that during the outbreak, I tasted all the ice cream at the supermarket. One of the flavors tasted disgusting and made me vomit. It had onions, meat floss, milk, and cumin. The taste is unforgettable. -

P.E. Class During the Epidemic
During the epidemic, our physical education classes became more efficient and healthier. In the school's physical education class, we only do free activities. We can do whatever exercises we want. This led to the inertia of some students. Now, everyone concentrates on the online class. We exercise more and have become healthier and stronger. -

My Instagram Feed April 4-16 2020
My little hand-production company (custom hand painted fabrics for interiors)?agut down operations Match 18. Everyone was load off and I suddenly found myself working from home for the first time in 42 years. To keep us together spiritually I posted shots of our home activities, and it came to pass that masks took over., 3 of my work team of young people decided on their own individually to make masks at the very beginning of this. I thought quietly to myself, ho hum whatever. They taught me a lesson without meaning to. I sure as heck never thought I’d be caught dead in a mask - I had read the science back then, 4 weeks ago. It turns out, intuitively, they were on to something. Finally on April 16 so I put one on just to say - right on, next gen- you got this one! Just a tiny example of how the sweeping pandemic is blowing out all our preconceptions. -

a reassurance
there's a lot of uncertainty floating around it feels like life has come to a standstill a bundle of feelings sits in your stomach, feelings you can't seem to digest. our busy lives and the activities we used to fill them with have seemed to disappear. one by one, we roll to a stop. in times like these, we must remember to take care of ourselves. to protect and shield what we care about, and take time to focus on our own well-being. but it's just as important to care for each other to be considerate and kind with your words, to show compassion with your actions to be a little human every once in a while. it all seems like a cliché or a fifty-cent apocalyptic movie, but this is what where we are in the moment and so we must adapt. -

Isolation and panic
When we were first getting word on the Corona virus and it spreading, nobody could imagine a country shut down. As reports of toilet paper hoarding, of all things, went viral, I, as a clear head, was telling people not to panic, not to give in to the fear. My work told us to work from home and so I started March 17th, 2020 working from home. The isolation is incredible. Your co-workers are gone, your book clubs, religious gatherings, meeting neighbors for coffee, mom's groups are suddenly all gone, in a blink of an eye. It is just you and your laptop. So after a few days of isolation, I decided to walk to my neigborhood grocery store for a few things. I walk in and at first everything seems normal. Then I saw the canned and bagged goods aisle, totally empty!! empty, shelves, and shelves and shelves - empty. That deep reaction is fear and panic. I had to really stop myself from panicking. As I walked around, other shelves of paper goods were all empty. Scary! I went over to the fruit and veggie aisles and those were full, which calmed me a bit. Everyone was keeping their distance checking out, so that kept me calm, too. But seeing those empty shelves really got to me because those are something you never see! This is week 4 of tele-working. I go for my daily walks, avoiding people. I pick up fast food or restaurant food or have them delivered, I visit my grocery store once a week or so. But yeah, the isolation is total. -

100 gecs are announcing a Minecraft music festival, because of course they are. Their music festival, Square Garden, is a benefit to raise money for Feeding America. 100 gecs and Charli XCX are co-headlining, and the lineup also includes other collaborators and kindred spirits like Kero Kero Bonito, A.G. A Quilter's Masks in a Church Garden
My friend Diane, who lives on my street in Washington Heights, Manhattan, is a quilter. I met her at her Lutheran church, a beautiful old stone building on our street, with a vegetable garden on one side. I’m Jewish, but the church has arts events, and we met that way. When I read that quilting cotton is the best material for homemade masks, I asked Diane if she could make two for me because I have asthma, which puts me at high risk for Covid complications. She said yes immediately because she was already making masks, and she invited me to the church garden, where I could retrieve them from a bench without getting close to her. The next day, with spring in all its glory, I found her sitting there with a mask on. With my face covered as well, I stood across the garden and had the first face-to-face conversation I’d had with anyone in several weeks, which was such a relief. And Diane said that because of her quilting, “I felt called to make masks.” With her generosity and those six words, what a surprise and consolation: Life in its richness had blossomed again, under the sun and flowering trees. Thank you, Diane. -

Timing is everything in life!
As an empty nester couple at retirement age, with certain underlying health issues, our main concern is not our jobs,or cash flow, but rather the future of our children and grandchildren. While they are close, we are separated and isolated from them and this is very hard to accept, especially with no specific end in sight. -
