Cannot Hear You Anymore
The ability to hear, the ability to speak, the ability to process what has been said and respond. All of these changed for me in my classroom because of COVID. First the students went totally away, silence, and not the comforting restorative kind, but the absence of those that have become part of me. Suddenly gone silent. After some time they return but not near enough. Talking and hearing through masks obscures and diffuses the words. Can you please repeat that, repeated over and over again. Words cannot get through the first time. Or the second. Frustration sets in and lingers even now. Lack of hearing becomes a lack of understanding and lack of empathy. Habits of caring and concern atrophy. I have endless patience with my students, less so for the rest of my fellow man. The man that refuses to wear a mask across the aisle on a flight home, telling me to shut up when I request that he cover his face. Maybe he can hear, but just refuses to. The relative that isn't vaccinated but still wants to come to the funeral and risk others. They cannot hear my wisdom, though they might tell you that I cannot hear theirs. The masks come off but still the hearing does not return. The classroom starts to normalize, but the rest of the world does not. -

Reagans Experience
The pandemic was a crazy time but I believed it brought many people together. For example my whole family was home during quarantine, no one was away at school or work. This allowed us a whole summer to sit back and relax with one another. Particular things we did a lot was spend time outside by walking the neighborhood and spending time by the pool. We also enjoyed ordering to go food from local restaurants to help support them through the difficult time. -

How it started... How it's going
So many things about the pandemic has been (and continues to be) traumatizing and negative and irritating. But looking back through my phone I saw a photo from the first puzzle I did in April 2020, and then the first photo of our Pandemic Pet, Sunny, from October of that year. So, instead of focusing on the disruptions, today I will focus on two good things from the pandemic. Putting together puzzles has been a fun, stress-relieving activity for me, and I continue to have a puzzle going on our rarely used table even if our lives are back to full busy mode. So that is a hobby I picked up during the pandemic that I can see continuing long into the future. Also, the kitty has brought fun and cuddles to our family, and we all love her (except, perhaps, the dog). Getting a cat was not on our radar until we were locked down and sad. So, for now, I am thankful for puzzles and kitties. -

Anzac Day in the Street
HIST30060: Anzac Day was commemorated in a COVID-safe fashion. Some rose at dawn to stand at the end of their driveway, with many leaving messages or objects around the streets. I went for a walk and spotted several commemorative pieces in my area, including this ute with an electric candle and mat reading ‘Lest We Forget’. -

Robotics In Quarentine
I am on a world level competitive robotics team with 6 other students at schools across my city. We compete locally and at the world level in a robotics competition released by VEX every year. With a different set of rules every year it's a big challenge to keep up with it but, we all love it. This is one if not the most important thing to me in my life. I put a lot of time, effort and money into it as it is my passion. Last season (April 2019- April 2020), I put around 2,000 hours into the robot. I absolutely love it and I would attach a video of my robot but the file is too big which is why I picked the youtube reveal for the game. It introduces the game and generally summarizes the rules. This season, what I have done during our “summer break” most people would play video games or watch Youtube but I build, program and work on the engineering notebook. It has helped keep me relatively sane and helped me pass the time and keep me from being extremely bored. What I have submitted is the reveal for the game this year. It shows how the game is played what it’s called and everything else about it. -

Did Cruise Companies Act too Late?
All it took was one passenger who disembarked a week before others began to fall ill, to quarantine all passengers and crew on the Diamond Princess by February 4th. Given the dire nature of these outbreaks, many have asked – did the cruise companies act too late? This Washington Post article outlines the experiences of the Celebrity Eclipse and Coral Princess, where before passengers could disembark, the two ships reported 150 Covid-19 cases and six deaths in April. At the time the article was written, the cruise industry reported outbreaks on 55 ships in waters across the globe and 65 deaths among passengers and crew. The article alleges that the industry failed to recognize the signs and symptoms of Covid-19, which later were confirmed as positive cases. Further concerning allegations from the article claim that cruise ships brought Covid-19 to ports and cities around the globe that were otherwise virus-free, where many places lacked the infrastructure to handle large-scale outbreaks. -

Back of Chinese international student
When Covid-19 exploded all over the world, international students became desolate and frustrated. They could not go back to their motherland because of Covid-19. They had to stay to resist the virus and protect themselves. The Chinese embassy in the United States provided some face-masks, wipes, and some medicines to Chinese students in the US. The photo recorded how CSSA staff distributed these supplies to each student. They wearing protective clothing and goggles check everything was fine, which soothed the student's anxious mood under the situation of Covid-19. -

The Necessities
I live on Long Island, in New York. I was stopped at a traffic light and happened to see this sign for “The Barn”. The Barn is a drive through grocery store and there are several of them on Long Island. Usually the sign advertises ice cream, milk, eggs. This day, the important items are “masks, Duraflame, White Castle”. I thought that this was an odd combination of necessities, and if I had seen this sign at any other time I would be confused. But it sadly made perfect sense to me. Masks because we can’t go anywhere without them. Duraflame because people are at home and enjoying fires. And White Castle because fast food restaurants are closed or deemed unsafe. This sign made me sad - because of what it said, and because I understood it. Okinawa: Sorry We Are Closed
One of a series of digital posters produced by the Save Okinawa Project, depicting sites in Okinawa and encouraging people to not visit the islands right now. Right now, our infection rate per 1 million people is 14th in the country (as of 2020/4/24). Residents of the prefecture are also refraining from going out, shutting down operations, trying hard to prevent the spread of infection. Right now, we want you to refrain from Okinawa travel. Once we both are well, let's fully enjoy the islands. Three reasons you cannot fully enjoy Okinawa right now: 1) tourist sites and beaches are closed 2) entertainment venues are closed 3) medical facilities are over-capacity (112 hospitalized patients for each 40 hospital beds) -

Terrariums as Meditation
Isabella Hurley, age 19, has found both a new hobby and a new means of coping through terrarium creation. When I spoke to her about it, she said "it's like building a little planet. I get so caught up in planning each detail and arranging them, that I am able to forget about all the stress around me. I especially like doing intricate ones because they're time consuming." She said this wasn't something she had imagined doing before the pandemic, but that with her new abundance of free time she's been able to find a hobby that really calls to her. -

Journal of the Plague Year entry 4- Logan Bellos
Connecticut (where I'm from) has been one of the top states with most Coronavirus cases, however I think we are starting to see the bright side of the tunnel. My mom is a hospital nurse and although her hospital hasn't gotten the most cases, it is still not a place you want to be. However, she's told me that less and less people are coming in with the coronavirus which to me, shows that social distancing is really working for us and it is great to see people doing what they should be. Let's hope we can keep it up. -

Corona Virus Clorox Meme
The meme is a can of Clorox as if it is drinkable soda. It is playing upon the recent conference President Trump had in which he said we could 'inject Clorox to prevent the virus'. This was so significant that Clorox came out with a statement addressing this, stating their product is not meant to be consumed or put in the human body at all. The type of humor present in this meme is very satirical. It brings to light the humorous and unfortunate reality of our ignorant President. -

We already have favorite masks!
My partner and I bought these masks off Etsy and accessorized them from our own collection. Kids especially love my partner's mask and yell "Pitbull! Pitbull!" when they see him. He makes claws with his hands and goes "GRRRRRRR!" and he always gets a giggle. We lose so much communication without being able to smile at one another. These masks are fun and invite a little social interaction (at a safe distance of course) -

Skull scarf mask
My friend gave me the scarf patterned with roses and skulls About 15 years ago when I was 25 and lived in Chicago. Today I put it on thinking so much of her because we are both 40 now and I just read today that people our age are experiencing strokes after having mild or asymptomatic cases, and a scarf with skulls seems like an appropriate “mask”. I also put it on because I was about to take a walk around the block and masking up in Wisconsin, where I live, feels a little extreme because I often don’t encounter anyone else while walking, and if I do, I’m able to get well away from them. Still it’s nice to have a scarf at least something to dip my face and when I feel vulnerable. Even if I know it doesn’t really work scientifically it helps to have a gesture -

Looking for a Cure
As the strict quarantine in Madrid extends to its 40th day, many residents are looking for cures or other possible fixes so that they may return to their normal life. Conspiracy theories are particularly rife, and 5g has been a popular target. After the destruction of cell towers in the U.K., it remains to be seen if that kind of action will immigrate to Spain as well. -

"A Blessing in Disguise“
I’m a freshman at Arizona State University, which was a big jump since I started off my life in a small town in Ohio. But I was ready for an adventure.College just finally started to get good. I was making some really good friends, enjoying work on campus, and doing well in my studies. And then it hit. COVID-19 hit. My job closed down, my friends moved back home, and school went all online. I was distraught. How could I do this on my own? How will I mentally get through this? But my community built me up. Zoom classes turned into a Zoom get together‘s with my classmates and friends. My teachers were understanding and even more helpful during this time. My coworkers and I grew even stronger bonds through this. At the beginning of this worldwide pandemic I thought to myself “how will I manage”, but now I am here to say we have gotten through the bulk of it and it has not only made me a stronger person but a stronger friend and student. All in all, though I thought this would have been the worst thing that could ever happen I’m here to say I’m more confident my studies, I know I have amazing friends and mentors to back me up, and I know any day now things will go back to normal and we will all be grateful and cherish how lucky we are to have the things that we have and to attend a university as amazing as Arizona State. #REL101 -
