Observations on Catholic Prayer Groups
I recently had the chance to observe a Catholic prayer group, done remotely due to COVID-19. The meeting lasted about an hour. The group was made mostly of women and they performed the rosary, as a devotion to Mary. After this was complete the women went into discussion. What I found was that many of these women were struggling due to recent events. Unemployment, anxiety, and sickness were all cited as problems for them. They asked each other to pray for them. This sort of group therapy, creates a sense of security, belonging, and hope. Many expressed how important the meeting was to them, as they needed an outlet to express their fears. The talk therapy, coupled with the ritual of rosary, helped these women during a difficult time. It is a testament to how many religious people may cling to their faith in times of distress. Karl Marx famously called religion “the opium of the people”. This experience showed me that in a way this is true; it did place these women at ease with their situation. Marx expressed this in a negative light, but what I saw was a necessary attempt to seek out community amidst an ordered isolation. To these women, it seems not an opium but rather a medicine for mental and spiritual well-being. #REL101 -

Covid 19 and a broken heart.
My heart was broken right before the quarantine begun. During this time I didn’t actually care about the virus. I was empty, devastated, alone, feeling miserable, feeling guilty, coz it was my fault. I was soo in love. I v never had this feelings before in my life. I felt like I was in heaven, I couldn’t believe that somebody could love me also. And because of that I fucked everything. The thing is that during the quarantine you can’t go anywhere or see much people, or meet new people for heeling yourself. This is one the hardest times I had so far. -

WIRED Magazine manages a print issue May 2020
WIRED Magazine managed to get a print copy out this month with actual current Coronavirus related coverage. It was written and compiled while they were socially isolated and was achieved by replacing the first section of the existing next month's issue as well as the cover with new Coronavirus related coverage. The cover is extremely rough quality and has a look of having been created on the fly under difficult circumstances -

Concert posters reinvented
With the cancellation of mass gatherings including music concerts, street posters about music concerts suddenly stopped appearing. The poster in this location before these demonstrated exact how far you need to stand to be 1.5 metres apart. Now an ad for making your will. Death is on people’s minds and I believe there has been a rush on people updating their wills. -

Queuing to enter the supermarket in times of physical distancing
Just before Easter our Coles reorganised itself. It closed the entrance via the arcade and made one door and entrance and the other an exit. There are signs on the wall instructing people to stand a supermarket trolley apart. People mostly do this (not like at the Aldi that I also passed today!). Someone stands at the exit door counting the people leaving and they let the person at the entrance know how many people to allow in. The only time there’s been a queue has been the Easter weekend and this Anzac Day weekend. Strangely the smaller Woolworths across the road has no queue. -
