New Norms in the Healthcare Environment
As the spread of Covid grew larger and larger, masks and face shields became the new norm at the hospital. New precautions included temperature checks at the entrances, reuse of PPE, and a completely new hospital environment. Whole wings of the hospital previously dedicated to elective surgeries were cleared out preparing for the surge. Patients were not allowed visitors and when they needed to see a friendly face the most, all they were able to see was our eyes. -

During the quarantine period, most people worked remotely. Zoom was the name of the software most commonly used for meetings and schooling with everyone at different locations. The creator is Zach King who is a magician. You can check out his YouTube channel if you want. -

7 Sex Offenders Released Early Due to COVID-19 in Orange County Despite Parole Violations
In an effort to slow the spread of Covid-19 inside the nation's correctional facilities a small percentage of inmates have been released early or have been released to house arrest. The thought behind this action is to lessen the number of people inside the facilities allowing more space for social distancing and/or to not expose inmates to a possible death sentence if they were to contract covid and not recover. Though officials have promised not to free any inmate that poses a public safety risk stories like this one appear all over the country. This article states that seven sex offenders, who had served their original sentences but had returned to jail for parole violations, were released early from the Orange County Jail in California. The article was edited a day later to include a statement from the sheriff stating these individuals were not release early but were released by court order. -

Massachusetts Commissioner of Public Health Orders: April 28 - May 12, 2020
These two orders, issued by the Massachusetts Public Health Commissioner in late April and early May of 2020, waive the time frame for CNA training and the need for health screenings in Massachusetts schools. Both of these mandates reflected the constant need to buttress the number of frontline medical personnel available for service, as well as the fact that Massachusetts schools would no longer require such screenings due to the transition to virtual learning. -

Humans of Covid-19 AU: Suzy Suzet
“My life was so different to how it is now. I had a very good hourly job and social life. I really want it back like that. The distance is so hard and awkward. I miss my lovely clients whose house I clean. It has totally changed my life. I do a lot of charity work with the Singapore community to occupy my time without work. We help each other with whatever we can. We give food to people who need it on a continuous basis. Many people aren’t earning money right now, but a way to survive is by helping each other. I hope that my family is safe over in Indonesia. Indonesia is one of the worst Asian countries for COVID19. It is very serious. I really want to shout out to my people “this is the worst thing and listen to the government’s warnings!”. I always remind my family: stay at home. Don't worry about food or money, I will provide. Just don’t step outside the house. I really appreciate the Australian Government, they are doing the best. The cases have slowed down, and there has been a good response and togetherness from all of the people. We must always be aware of what the government is saying. Always listen and do it, it’s not that hard. This is not a holiday, lock down is lock down. I have to go outside to make money. The rest are very lucky to work from home.” Instagram post on Suzy Suzet, cleaner, and her experience during the pandemic, which was created by a psychology student living in Melbourne who was interested to hear about how COVID-19 was impacting on different peoples’ lives. -

Fort COVID
My laptop died, so I headed to Sawyer Library in search of a replacement laptop, a much needed item in this COVID time. With only a select few stores open and selling electronics and with no inventory due to manufacturing restrictions, I was forced into the possibility of borrowing one from the library. Passing through security, I noticed that Tom, who said he never left, still collects the university's newspapers, which are piling up. The newspapers behind him belong to other depts. on campus. Meanwhile, the library's newspapers sit in buckets around the corner waiting to be claimed. I call these piles "Fort COVID". -

The tracker shows areas where I have struggled to maintain a full routine while in quarantine. Most apparent is the issue of insomnia and drinking and eating enough daily. -

Mask fabric from a friend
As soon as the CDC announced that the general public should start wearing masks whenever we are away from home I began making masks for myself, family, and friends. Unlike most people who sew I did not have a large stash of fabric to work with and the stores were out and even getting it from an online seller was taking four weeks. I reshared a picture of empty shelves at the Walmart fabric department someone else had taken and shared on Facebook and a woman I had only met once offered to send me fabric. I live in Texas and she lives in California. This is the box of fabric she sent via priority mail. I was so excited to receive this treasure. On top of that I've been getting elastic for mask making from another friend in Oklahoma who was able to order it wholesale, right before it became impossible to get. I've sent 60 masks to a local prison, about 30-40 to the Window Rock Reservation Wellness Center, and have given and sold about another 100 to friends, family, and random people who found out I was making masks via Facebook. I've also sent mask to several other states, including Ohio, Alaska, Michigan, and Kentucky, including masks made from the material in that box. *Cotton fabric -

Lysol Juul Meme
I have been doing this series on memes for the archive for a class, as I love social media. This was a submission from my Professor; she sent me it via email. Reflecting on receiving this meme form my professor, I realize the importance of memes especially in times of chaos. They reach all people in one way or another; they are universal. I think that's the beauty of memes. This meme in particular exposes public sentiment in reference to our president along with satire on his solution for the pandemic. -

New Orleans Musicians Perform A Socially Distanced Funeral Song, New Orleans LA
From NPR: "Relative to other states, Louisiana experienced an early spike in COVID-19 cases and on March 16, the city of New Orleans issued social distancing guidelines that advised against gatherings of more than 10 people. That included funerals. When a few names on the deceased list hit close to home, Brass-a-Holics bandleader Winston "Trombone" Turner felt they needed to be honored like they would have been, ordinarily — with music. So, in a moment when so many are offering what they can for the common good, Turner picked up his horn and called a few friends to record a performance of "I'll Fly Away" in City Park. It's a song played at almost every traditional New Orleans funeral that allows the congregation to celebrate the passing of a soul from one life to the next." -

Students’ Belongings
This is a photo taken in the multipurpose room of an elementary school. Following the closure of the schools, teachers were asked to return to school to pack up the students’ belongings. Teachers were allowed in to the building on a very tight schedule, only a few at a time. They labeled each student’s bag and placed in line, according to the student’s last name. At some future date the parents will be able to pick up the bag at a curbside location. -

Notes From an Essential Worker Series #4
The COVID-19 virus disrupts life, particularly our relationships with those we love. But, relationships are flexible and adapt to circumstance. My mom wrote my dad this sign before his big meeting with a German client overseas. He had been under a lot of stress preparing for the meeting, so my mom put this note of encouragement on his office door to let him know she was thinking about him. Although she could not wish him luck in person because she works such long hours now, she still found a way to be there for him. #FordhamUniversity #VART3030 -

California beaches closed and empty
This is a photograph of a beach located in my hometown (Carlsbad, CA). Due to COVID-19, beaches in the San Diego area have been temporarily closed. No one is allowed to surf, swim, walk, or sit on the sand. If you look closely, you will see caution tape on the stairs and other entrances to the beach have been blocked off. This is a beach town, the beach is never empty and temperatures have been in the 80s. We are entering the time of year where the beach is the most popular and fun thing to do, but now any beach plans will be cancelled until further notice. #REL101 -

Priest giving blessings at Saint Juan Diego and Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Chandler, AZ on Easter Sunday and Divine Mercy Sunday.
During Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday the priest at Saint Juan Diego and Saint Mary's went on to give blessings during these joyous days by having families or just people drive up in their cars like a drive-thru and the priest would extend their hand to give them the blessings.
