Graduated but not Graduating
The screenshot is a cancellation email from graduation services letting us know that our graduation was being postponed, ultimately it was canceled altogether. Like many, I also lost the opportunity to walk across the stage after completing my undergraduate degree in the spring of 2020. Really it wasn’t until I found out that the graduation was canceled that I realized how much the graduation had meant to me. Before, I thought “It's just a piece of paper, who cares if you walk across the stage to get it.” It's more than that, for many it’s a transition from academia to the workforce, a real transition in life that is captured in a moment. For me, it was a little different as it was more of capturing a moment of hard work and dedication as I completed my degree while having a full-time job in the military. Also, I was the first person in my family to complete a college degree. Not graduating doesn’t erase these accomplishments, but it does alter the celebration of the accomplishments. The pandemic changed what was considered “normal.” We can see this as graduations later in the pandemic shifted to virtual graduations accomplished over Zoom or Skype. Obviously, this is not the same experience by a long shot, but I do think that it is still important to capture these big life moments in some way. I am writing this in March 2022, the pandemic has tapered off and I hope that this spring/summer people have the opportunity to experience a real graduation! -

On A Knee
The photo highlights a peaceful protest that involved the participation of medical faculty. The health care workers included in this photograph included doctors, nurses, admin, security guards and handful of maintenance. This was demonstration to support the Black Lives Matter Movement after the killing of a George Floyd at the hands of a police officer. The individuals in this photo can all be seen taking a knee similar to the protest method used by Colin Kaepernick. National Football League, player Colin Kaepernick took his first knee on September 1, 2016. The taking of the knee went against the tradition of standing during the signing of the National Anthem. Kaepernick said at the time: “I am not going up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color”. The people in this picture felt the same exact sentiments as Kaepernick. I chose this source because I wanted historians to understand the impact of the pandemic and the unity it created amongst individuals of different races. As a health care worker, I faced the challenges of Covid-19 directly. The fear of transmitting COVID-19 led to months of isolation from my loved ones. This feeling of loneliness contributed to the decline of mental health for me and many of my co-workers. On May 25, 2021, when George was murdered by a Minneapolis police officer over a suspicion of a counterfeit $20 bill my feeling of loneliness grew tremendously. Being an African American man in the united states was now just as dangerous as the virus killing thousands in New York. When the members of my staff came up the idea of protesting for the rights of African Americans, my feeling of loneliness begin to fade. Kneeling on the ground next to coworkers of all different races reminded of the inclusiveness and unity that we all needed in life. This was a moment in a history that will never be forgotten. -

"The Plan Won't Accomplish Anything..." (Great Scott, RIP)
On May 1, 2020, the manager of Allston music venue Great Scott announced that the club would not reopen. In the days that followed, residents gathered in front of the doors to mourn its loss and share memories. On the blackboard used to advertise each night's bands and set times, someone wrote "The Plan Won't Accomplish Anything If It's Not Implemented," a lyric from the Built To Spill song, "The Plan" (from the 1999 album, Keep It Like A Secret). Built To Spill is not from Allston (they are from Boise, Idaho), but they are a seminal indie rock band and a formative influence for many musicians and fans who frequented Great Scott. The sign also reads "Allston Rock City" and "Thanks!" One of Allston's nicknames is "Allston Rock City." -

Merchandise in Quarantine
In Cambridge, MA, we depend on small businesses, whether they’re corner stores, beauty parlors, restaurants, or specialized outlets. This picture is the lattermost, a music store called Cheapo Records, which I visited often before quarantine. Places like this are extremely important for both conserving history and discovering new music (without algorithms). COVID-19 has only exacerbated the danger Cheapo and others are facing due to rising rents. This picture I took before they reopened spoke to me because it shows how the hiatus wasn’t expected to be this long; the merchandise is left outside, behind an iron curtain, in uncertain indefinance. -

Coronavirus Wedding in a Drive In
When the virus hit, all great plans were canceled: vacations, concerts, sporting events, and weddings. This couple found a way to get married safely--at a drive in theater. The guests watched from their decorated cars, dressed in PJs. Those that couldn't attend were able to watch the festivities on social media. The bridal party practiced proper social distancing--they were 6 feet apart. -

Covid-19 Propaganda Posters
These posters were made as a parody of several statements and promises made by President Trump during the Covid-19 pandemic. They show the absurd, callous, and gross attempts to persuade the American people into believing the pandemic is either not serious, taken seriously by the government, or that sacrificing human life is necessary to maintain high profits for the stock market. -

Amid Pandemic, Winnebago Tribe Prioritizes Resources
“The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, like all the other tribes across the na-tion, has been affected by the corona-virus. Social distancing restrictions has caused many changes within the community including the temporary closing of the Winnavegas Casino, the main resource for the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. Inevitably, this also forced the tribe to temporary furlough certain tribally funded positions…Unfortunately, the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, a government agency, is not eligible for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) “a loan designed to pro-vide a direct incentive for small busi-nesses to keep their workers on payroll” (sba.gov). Staying optimistic and proac-tive, the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska has been taking steps to take care of the tribal members, community and its employees to the best of its ability…The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska is waiting for a distribution from the US Department of Treasury. The Coronavi-rus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act was passed by Congress and signed by President Trump which included an $8 billion allocation for all tribes to fund COVID-19 prevention, preparedness and response.” -

Mother Healthcare worker crying
This image displays a baby, reaching out and touching the face shield of what seems to be her mother all gowned up and dressed in PPE. The woman in the picture who seems to be a healthcare worker is crying as she is torn away from being able to hug and kiss her child because of the possibility of being infected after working in the hospital with coronavirus patients. She is crying because she has to be away from her family for 12-48 hour shifts and can’t be there with her family during a moment in time where everyone is living in fear of the virus. This picture is especially special because it touches upon the hardships that healthcare workers are facing after working with patients all-day and not being able to have that relief of coming home and being comforted by their family members. This post was also made right before mother's day to honor these health care mothers. The caption to this picture was in Portuguese and said "Mães. Hoje é o vosso dia. Esta ilustração vem ao encontro das mensagens que fui recebendo de profissionais de saúde que anseiam voltar a abraçar os filhos. Continuem com a mesma força de sempre. A cuidar dos filhos, dos pais e dos avós de alguém. O coração dos vossos filhos está carregado de orgulho. 🖤 a todas as mães um grande beijinho, um especial à minha. ✨ ©️2020, Sofia Pádua." When translated to English it said "Mothers. Today is your day. This illustration is in line with the messages I have received from health professionals who want to hug their children again. Continue with the same strength as always. Taking care of someone's children, parents, and grandparents. Your children's hearts are filled with pride. A big kiss to all mothers, a special one to mine. ✨ © ️2020, Sofia Pádua." #CSUS #HIST15H *Instagram Post -

Free Masks For the Less Fortunate
The new rule that Andrew Cuomo released makes everyone wear masks everywhere they go. He made this a rule so we can try to prevent the spread of Covid 19 even more. Although you need to wear masks not everyone has access to them because they are sold out at many places and some cant afford to buy them. Also many healthcare workers need them because they are running out and cant find them anywhere. SInce this is a big problem New York State gave 7 million more masks across New York. -

Cops and Toilet Paper
I was down to my last roll of toilet paper. I had ordered more but knew it may not come for another two weeks... something had to be done. First I went to Fry's… No toilet paper, Then Safeway and Target...no toilet paper. I had almost been defeated but decided to try out Walmart. As I was walking in I saw about five police cruisers parked in front of the store. As I approach the toilet paper aisle I am greeted by an officer telling me to wait in line if I wanted toilet paper. After a short wait I make out with a 24 pack. #REL101 -

University of San Francisco Acceptance Letter
Attached you will find my admission letter to the School of Nursing and Health Professions at the University of San Francisco. Upon writing this entry, I have been admitted and secured my spot at the institution. I was admitted approximately one month ago, during the crisis itself. This photo of my admission letter is beyond meaningful to me even more so because of the circumstances we all are now facing. My passion for nursing has always been the driving force for how I conduct my school efforts. Despite my extensive family size, I actually am one of the first to enter the medical profession. I was inspired to enter into this field in high school when I shadowed a fellow family friend. I visited her at the Mercy San Juan Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and immediately was drawn to this unit. From that day, I never could consider any other field of study. I am in continuous awe of those on the frontlines, especially nurses and doctors. Upon admission to nursing school, typically clinicals would be a part of one’s first-semester curriculum. Due to the pandemic, my clinicals have actually been pushed back an additional semester. With nursing school especially, and the current incoming cohorts curriculum has drastically shifted. I point this out because no matter how big or small, in some way each of our lives has been changed by this event. At this point, I'm unaware if even my first semester will be held on campus. There is a rather high chance I will be online for my first semester of nursing school. All of our lives right now are for lack of a better word “tentative”, who knows how things will change or when things will resolve to normalcy. #CSUS #HIST15H -

What Spring has Sprung: Bus Driver vs. Elderly
This photo was taken at the beginning of COVID before it was mandatory to wear a mask. Thus, the bus driver being a non-masker. Nonetheless, he got off the bus to tell the elderly she COULD NOT get on the bus from the front. She was worried because the other two entrances were too high for her. He offered to lift her but she insisted on getting on from the front door. He eventually pulled off without her. -

Quarantine Zumba
During the pandemic, Mikayla Hopkins was studying abroad at the Suffolk University's Madrid Campus. Once the campus decided to close, she chose to stay in Madrid with a host family until the semester ended. Here she can be seen with her host mom and sister, doing Zumba by watching a YouTube video. Every day at 7 PM Mikayla, her host family and some of her host mom's friends via Zoom would video call one another and do Zumba together as a form of exercise since we can't go outside. We have been doing it every day for a month and a half. -
