The Little Things
The pandemic hit and many new college students were forced to enjoy their admission celebrations from their homes through their computer screen and Zoom. Still, St. Mary's University pushed forward to make this event memorable and celebrate future incoming Rattlers to their new school. This screenshot is a still shot of the emotions and celebrations early freshmen experienced during the pandemic. Being accepted into university is no small thing, but a Zoom celebration is a small gesture of congratulations that feels very big. -

School Cancellation News Article
2. This news article, although short and not very informative, is important to my experience with the coronavirus because it was when I had first learned that schools had started to close. My mother had sent it to me about when as the news had just come out. This was a big moment and a turning point for lots of people because although we had heard lots about the coronavirus and had seen the numbers and read the articles, this would be the first time it would affect us directly. The pandemic, at this time, had finally started to feel real and it had dawned upon me, and likely many others, that this would be something that would really impact me and my life, and it was no longer just something you heard or talked about. This, to me, shows how quickly the pandemic grew and took people by surprise. It also reminds me of times when people would claim that the coronavirus was being exaggerated by the media, or when others would guess that the virus would be gone before summer, because this was the moment that disproved those theories to me. -

David Chang Permanently Closes Momofuku CCDC Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic
This article covers what is happening in the fine dining industry during Covid-19. All restaurants are dealing with the pandemic and the loss of revenue. Many fine dining restaurants are closing because the cost margins are so narrow and for these restaurants to stay in business they need a full house. It also highlights the decision making that David Chang had to process and look out for the well-being of his employees if they did take-out and delivery. #foodislife, #davidchang #momofuku, #covid19 (Arizona State University, HST 580) -

The grief is so unbearable': Virus takes toll on Navajo
"One-third of the homes across the vast, dry reservation don't have running water, forcing families to haul it in. Many in close-knit Navajo communities live in crowded houses where self-quarantine is impossible, and many must drive hours to the nearest grocery store. To most Navajo, isolating an infected person from their family is deeply alien." -

Claiming Their Space: Black Student Activism at the University of Maryland
Graduate students curated this digital exhibit in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. We originally intended to have a physical exhibition about black student activism in the 1960s that would be up for one to two semesters. Instead, the campus pivoted to remote learning and our exhibition did as well. We practiced digital museum curation and added two elements about the pandemic. Now visitors can read about how pandemics affects research process and archive accessibility. *Dr. Quint Gregory -

Irish Donors Contribute to Navajo Nation Hit Hard By Covid-19: Repaying American Indians for Helping Them During the Potato Famine
“The Attorney General for the Navajo Nation has issued a heartfelt ‘thank you’ for the outpouring of support from Irish people and people of Irish descent donating essential funds to Native American tribes affected by the coronavirus pandemic…Donations have been flooding with Irish people and people of Irish descent chief among those to show their support for the Native American reservations as a way of repaying a 173-year-old favour. It all goes back to 1847, when Ireland was gripped by 'the great hunger', and Native Americans were struggling to rebuild their lives after suffering through the Trail of Tears. Incredibly, despite their own suffering, the Choctaw Nation tribe raised and sent $170 (an estimated $5,000 today) to Ireland for relief aid, and a monument was erected in County Cork decades later as a mark of respect, gratitude and solidarity.” #IndigenousStories -

Kitchen table haircuts
My friend drove down from Idaho to visit. She's been in isolation for weeks, we've been in isolation for weeks and she decided the best way to celebrate the end of the semester was to drive to Tempe. She also is a certified cosmetologist, and none of the hair salons are open, so we all got kitchen table haircuts. -

Swimming on Zoom?
I felt that there was nothing that made today stand out. I woke up really late. (Which seems to be the usual) I ate a cupcake and porridge. After that I did my schoolwork for the day. I am almost done with 7th grade! I then did my entire normal workout routine. I didn’t work out yesterday because it was my sister’s fifth birthday. I am so tired after taking only one day off. On the other hand, my mom and grandmother got me new running shoes since my other ones were giving me blisters. We ate Costco pizza for lunch. I had to eat fast since I had a scheduled Zoom meeting with my swimming coach to attend to. The meeting was about the Commencement Address by Admiral William H. McRaven. I also read his book a while ago. My coach, I, and other kids on my team my age talked about ten things you need to do if you want to change the world as discussed by Admiral McRaven. I also ate dinner, read a little, watched a little TV, and did more schoolwork. I am tired. -
