US Market for Pet Reptiles During the Pandemic
According to the report, during the pandemic, the market increased for pet reptiles. For families not wanting to take on the expense or space requirements of a dog or cat, but looking for an entertaining companion, reptiles make a great choice. They are allergy-friendly as well. The writer of the article anticipates that the trend in pet reptiles will only continue to increase in the years to come. -

Remote Learning
Learning virtually was not normal but we had to make it the norm. We were used to having everyone at school bunched up with no mask on. Now we were online in the comfort of our own homes looking at a screen with every student. I started to like online school. Siting with no dress code, being able to play video games like Call of Duty and NBA 2k in between classes. Eating whatever whenever we want and we enjoyed it. Until we all changed our minds and went crazy over the fact that everyone wanted to go back. An hour and 30-minute classes sitting in the same place with over amount of work to just take a picture and submit online. We took advantage when we were at school playing basketball at break and going to practice after school. We had to stay at home with nowhere else to go except grocery stores and the McDonalds drive-through. Everything was starting to get boring and we knew we couldn't stand these rules anymore and it was driving us insane. -

Adopt-A-Senior
When my senior year was cut short by the pandemic, the local community rallied together to “adopt” seniors. A Facebook page was created where parents of seniors would post short bios of their children and other people would “adopt” the teens and get them graduation gifts. My adoptee was a faculty member who I was close with. They gathered letters from all of my favorite teachers from grades K-12, which are pictured above. The letters were heartwarming and helped me find closure in the fact that I may never be able to properly say goodbye to the people who molded me into who I am today. -

Texas is spending $45 million on new coronavirus tests that prisoners are administering to themselves
"The state purchased 300,000 oral swab tests from a months-old California company. So far, only highly-infected prisons are using them for mass testing." The test has a 10% rate of false negatives. This test was given a rapid approval by the FDA and they have said anyone with symptoms and a negative test should be retested. The worry is without accurate testing of most inmates that the virus will spread widely and quickly due to unsanitary and cramped conditions. -

Virtual Film Festivals
After years of working on a new short film about the Seattle's iconic Space Needle, it was scheduled to screen at a number of film festivals. But then came the CoVid19, quarantine, closures of movie theaters, etc. Several film festivals either cancelled their festivals entirely, or transitioned to virtual film festivals online. Normally, film festival premieres come with lots of face-to-face parties and networking - hanging with other filmmakers and celebrating the excitement of taking our work out into the world. It's a time to 'stand in the spotlight' and connect with live audiences. But instead, a new type of festival experience is happening, and for me, it hasn't been bad, just very different. The Cascadia International Women's Film Festival screened my "Space Needle: A Hidden History" in May. Located in Bellingham, Wash., the festival organized a live conversation with an art critic, one of the participants in the film, and me. We talked for about 40 minutes - longer than the typical Q & A at a traditional festival. I answered questions from the comfort of my living room and toasted the event online with a beer. I felt honored by the thoughtful questions of a journalist and a brilliant dancer in the film, and the fact that we didn't have to squeeze in to a 10 min. window. The interview streamed on Facebook. Viewers tuned in from all over the country and the world. (Hopefully, they'll start referring to the Needle as a 'she' since the shape was inspired by a sculpture called, 'The Feminine One.') I later learned the organizers had as many, if not more, viewers as in previous years. For another festival, By Design at the Northwest Film Forum in Seattle, I videotaped an introduction to the film that screened before a real-time stream. That was convenient though I felt a bit stilted talking to the camera on my computer. As a film festival attendee, I liked that I was able to watch films online during a window of time, instead of having to make painful decisions about which films to see when several were scheduled at the same time, and if lucky, I could watch on my own time during a designated window. No hassle standing in lines to get tickets, waiting to be admitted and scrambling for seats. No sticky floors and spilled popcorn, coughing or snoring audiences. I'm glad I didn't have to fly anywhere or drive long distances, though I miss being with fellow filmmakers and the in-person synergy that happens when a bunch of us get together in the same space. -

How Coronavirus Has Devastated Queer Party Community
"DIY nightlife in New York City is quite an impressive achievement given the high volume of other, more institutional nightlife venues and agendas all through New York’s five boroughs. New York City is known all across the world for its bars, nightclubs, music venues and other social spaces, not only because of the city being a microcosm but also because of the rather lenient limitations of the city’s curfew on alcohol sales, allowing clubs to operate until 4:00 am or later." This article describes the impact of the pandemic on queer nightlife and was written by a senior journalism student following a beat developed and thought about in terms of the "local" in a journalism course at Pratt Institute that was upended by the pandemic. -

Please! Wear Da Mask
A image of the instagram famous dog Bert the Pomeranian, looking forlorn and holding a sign which reads, in mock childish writing to make it appear that he is the one that wrote it, "Please! Wear Da Mask." This image has been frequently shared on other people's Instagram stories as a plea for wider-spread use of masks. It taps into the influence of social media stars and popular accounts, such as those dedicated to dogs to promote healthy habits during the pandemic. By having a dog say it the message is softened for those who find it confrontational while still getting its point across. -

The First Day Out
This was taken on the first occasion that I left my hometown in almost two months of isolation. My partner and I went to Richmond, a town only ten minutes from my house and very familiar, but the act of leaving was peculiar after so long sequestered. The Richmond Bridge, featured in the image, is the oldest of its kind in Australia, a piece of convict heritage that has stood the test of time. Some of my earliest memories feature the bridge and its surrounds, and returning to that place at the beginning of a post-COVID-19 existence was a peculiar sensation. For me, it will now have dual historical implications, as a relic of the nineteenth century, and of the plague year. -

The Grind
I spent a lot of time in that place, you could say it kind of became a reality. Basically being stuck at home and working laboriously on schoolwork and studying for online exams such as the AP tests. The work only stops on the weekend where I can finally relax and do whatever I want. Once the weekend ends it's back to the endless labor and tiresome assignments that keep being piled on top of each other. -

Front Door Banners
Various grocery stores have implemented additional safety policies as the pandemic has worn on in Orange County. At the outset of California's quarantine there was a limit of one in, one out at this particular store. That has been amended, and now there are various markers throughout the store emphasizing: social distancing, not unnecessarily touching things, safety guidelines, and a banner of appreciation for people that continue to shop. *Joey Dorion took the photograph *Photograph of banners -

Tired in Quarantine
I was so tired from the minute I got out of bed. I only got out of bed at that time because everyone else in the house was already up and about. I took Elena to preschool and did my schoolwork. During my schoolwork I ate a piece of cake. I shouldn’t have done it. I should have eaten something healthy. I have, despite my best efforts, gained weight during this quarantine. Ross finally opened up again today with really low prices and my mom got me some clothes that I was very happy for. I am so happy to be blessed enough to be able to have nice new clothes. I tried them all on and my favorite were the camo pants. I was really tired and hungry during my workout, but I was hydrating better and ever before. I also got to do a fun game that my sister got for her birthday. It was actually cool. -
