Is COVID-19 a "Great Equalizer?" [DUPLICATE]
I made two memes. The first meme is intended to answer the question, “Are pandemics the “great equalizers” in terms of social inequalities—do they level the playing field?” with the example of COVID-19. And the meme says the answer is “no,” and that the socially vulnerable are more exposed to the dangers of COVID. The second meme is intended to answer the question, “Have you observed any patterns of human behavior with the Covid-19 pandemic?” Former President Trump called COVID the “China Virus” and fueled people’s hatred of Asians. This meme tries to remind the audience of his negative remarks but in a humorous way without offending Asian populations. It also illustrates how words can magnify feelings of racism, fear, and uncertainty, which can result in scapegoating. This meme gives the audience an opportunity to learn more about the unfair treatment of Asians during the pandemic and why it happened. -

The One Where We Were Quarantine
This is a chalk drawing that my friends and I made when we learned we would not being going back to school. This was very difficult because of the fact we were seniors had didn't get all the special things our last year . We wanted to make our mark on the school in a way that would show the school how much we loved coming every day. We went to the school and made this in the parking spots we usually parked in every day. This ended up going on the local news and the school website. -

A Starbucks re-opens after shelter in place
After a month and a half of paid stay at home time, a Starbucks in Junction City re-opens. The top image shows text, “Our store is temporarily closed” and the description reads “We’re here reopening the store. Come see us this Monday for your favorite Starbucks beverage. Store hours: 6am-4p.” The bottom image shows a group of baristas, wearing masks, back at work. The words pandemic, or covid-19 are nowhere to be found, trying to project a sense of normalcy. -

Boss Gave a Private Prom
This was when I worked at a cafe throughout the pandemic, and at the time I worked there with my boyfriend. The cafe was located on the edge of a lake, with lots of other nice resteraunts surrounding it along with wedding and party venues. Our boss felt bad that the pandemic took away basically everything from us, so she decided to do something really kind for us, which was throw us our own private prom. The room was very large and reserved for the two of us, and there were really great decorations, lights, and food. We had access to the side of the lake next to the water and the entire room was only open for us. It was one of the kindest gestures anybody has ever done for us, and it was one of the best moments that I had throughout the pandemic. -

California Coastline
March 13th was the day we were sent home from the office. Working remotely was not something I had experienced before. For the first month, I started re arranging my days. Instead of commuting for 4 hours a day I was working out in the mornings and reading more in the evenings. One day I dusted off my old film camera that I hadn't used in over 10 years. I purchased film and I started to take one photo a day. I would try to capture a photo that summed up that particular day. After two months of being on locked down I decided to drive from Orange County, CA to Big Sur. My cousin lives on 8 acres on the back side of Big Sur. I camped out on his property for a month, I ate off the land, cooked outside everyday and didn't get back into my car until the day of my departure. After a month, I decided to leave mid afternoon so I could catch the sunset on my six hour drive back home. I pulled off thirty miles past Post Ranch Inn and waited about eight minutes to click this shot in. The colors in the water, the length of the cliff and the dirt between my Red Wings and the ground made this the best photograph of the last six months. This pandemic has allowed me to slow down. To admire the little things in life and re introduce old hobbies into my life. My camera and I are one again, she comes every where with me. I will blow this photograph up one day, frame it and remind me of the times. It was fitting that I'd started reading On the Road: the Original Scroll by Jack Kerouac before my month long trip. I finished it in Big Sur. There are many great quotes by Jack in that book. However one reigns supreme..."Live, travel, adventure, bless, and don't be sorry." -

Covid Portraits
My family hires a photographer once a year to take our family portraits. This year I could not find a photographer due to Covid. I dusted off my good camera and me and my family went to some lavender fields. We took turns taking photos of each-other. I joked that I would Photoshop my husband into one of them but I honestly don't know how to do that and make it look ok still. Our Christmas photo this year will have to be some sort of collage. -

In Stillness: Voices from a Covid world
"In stillness: Voices from a COVID world" is a short film by writer Paolo Mangahas, which features phone voice recordings of people sharing their thoughts on a locked-down world. This 7-minute video gives an honest glimpse into everyone's struggles, vulnerabilities, and hopes during these challenging times. Paolo currently works and lives in Singapore, where a "circuit breaker" – safety measures to break the chain of COVID-19 transmissions in the community – has been implemented since April 3 (it is expected to be lifted in a phased approach starting June 2). Like the rest of the world, Singapore residents have been asked to stay at home and to only go out for essential activities, which include outdoor exercise. Paolo shot this film entirely using his iPhone during his daily run. -

Penguins Visit Kansas City Art Museum During Pandemic
This is an adorable story of 3 penguins named Bubbles, Maggie, and Berkley who were taken on a field trip to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Since the museum was closed due to the Coronavirus, the penguins had the place to themselves. They walked through the galleries admiring the paintings on the wall. I thought this was so cute and also shows another way that animals are "able" to inhabit environments they normally can't due to the presence of humans. -

A photo of an empty Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and beach with associated responses on Reddit.
An image shared on the Santa Cruz, CA subreddit showing the beach in front of the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk on day 60 the Shelter in Place along with some responses to the photo. This beach is usually very busy, especially on weekends during summer, and usually full of tourists visiting the amusement park. Because this beach is so busy there is usually a lot of trash here in the sand. I used to live near this beach when I live in Santa Cruz, and it is very weird seeing it empty like this at a time when it should be busy. -

The Challenges I Have Encountered With The COVID-19
Johanna Martinez Professor Nolan English 1A 16 May 2020 My Story Since the pandemics involving the coronavirus has occurred everything has changed for the worst including lifestyle, work, and school. I live in a house in Sky Valley with both my parents and two brothers. It is a house of 5 acres so we have a high monthly bill. Both my parents do not work so it's only my siblings and I who pay the rent. It has been very tough for me paying bills at such a young age that even with the COVID-19 it became much harder. I have been the one buying the groceries as well since I do not want my parents to be exposed to the vious since I know their amnt system is weak. However, it becomes hard since my mom has medicine she needs to be taking that only she can pick up which gets me very worried every time she goes. On the other hand, my sister just had her first baby and my family and I were very worried when she was at the hospital as well for the baby. Once she was out it was hard not being able to see the baby but we know it is for the best to keep her safe and healthy. All we received is pictures daily of how big shes is getting and how they are doing as well. I have also taken into my own hands helping my sister and her boyfriend out by buying them the groceries they need so the baby is safe with them home. Furthermore, work has been another challenge I have been facing daily since the epidemic started. My hours at work have dropped horribly which meant I was not going to be making the same amount of money as before. Now that I go to work I get more frustrated since when I do work we are not busy I go home two or three hours into my shift which does not help since it is more than a half hour drive so I have to pump gas often. As for my work environment it has also been hard working with gloves and a facemask since I do work with money I find it more challenging to make sure I have the right amount back or even breath well. Since I know I have to also help support my family by working I keep going to work trying to make the best of it. When I do come home I am careful and go straight to shower before seeing my family and having dinner with them. As for school it has also been very hard transfering to online class since I struggle more with learning online. Since the pandemic has started I have dropped two classes because it was being very challenging for me and was stressing way too much. I have been trying to get better at keeping up with my homework but it has gotten to the point where I forget or never see the notification. Now that the next semester is going to be the same as online class it is going to be hard again choosing classes I will be able to keep up with. Overall, it has been pretty tough dealing with the COVID-19 trying to keep my family safe because we are doing our best to protect ourselves. -

Staying Hopeful
I have learned in this quarantine that is you want to do something and not be lazy, then you must attack it head on and just go for it. The hardest part of accomplishing something is definitely starting. If you can start the thing you want, then you are more motivated to finish it because you have already spent time and effort trying to accomplish the thing you want. Even when I get out of this quarantine, I am going to try to apply this to my daily life. I really wonder when things are going to get back to normal, or if things will go back to normal. This might be the new normal which is a scary thought. I hope this is not the new normal because I had a plan for my future. Well kind of, but this is definitely not what I had planned. I am trying to remember that it is not about what I want for my future or what I think is supposed to happen in my life. It is about God’s plan and what he wants to happen in my life. -

Flowers in front of a closed real estate agency
On a trip through Pickens, SC my partner and I happened to pull into the parking lot of what appeared to be a very closed real estate agent with beautiful flowering garden running wild in front of it. I don't know if the business is closed because of the Coronavirus or just because it is Saturday but this picture made me think about how little nature cares about our business, even the nature we think we control. Even though we might have planted them there those flowers will keep growing beautifully with or without us. -

Event sight left half constructed when Covid-19 hit
This is an event sight in Pickens, SC, a place to hold weddings etc. The parts which are finished are absolutely beautiful but work stopped on the rest of the grounds when the pandemic began and one has to wonder if the need for social distancing and the economic downturn will make it impossible for the owners to continue the project. The piece of land is beautiful if scarred up at the moment and if it doesn't end up an event space it should become a park. My partner and I stumbled across it looking for a place to turn around because Table Rock State Park was at capacity. We could always use more beautiful places to spend time in nature, especially now. -

Assignment instructions for PSC 401D The State
Participating in Public History Hi, Rebels. Thank you for your hard work on your final paper. Your discussions of federalism and COVID-19 should not go to waste. I'm working with a project involved in chronicling people's experiences and the like during the time of coronavirus. We are living history. We must keep and curate information from all walks of life (rather than just the elite). Therefore, we are going to include your work in a growing archive of living history. Here is a news story that introduces and explains the archive: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/15/us/coronavirus-pandemic-historians-archive.html Upload your final paper to this website. You can do this anonymously, if desired. https://covid19.omeka.net/contribution A breakdown of the submission form follows: Contribution: Story Upload file: Your final paper in PDF form Title: This is NOT the title of your paper. The requested title is a descriptive term for fellow researchers looking for information. Pretend you are scrolling through pages of random data and looking for your work. Create a title for the archive that would help with that. Examples could include "Student Paper on Federalism and Coronavirus" or "Academic analysis of federalism and coronavirus" or "Examining the impact of coronavirus and federalism." Author: You. (If there is more than one author, you have two choices of the order to list people. The first is by order of effort (or seniority), and the second is alphabetical. Most of the time, academic collaborations have a primary author/editor/master kitten herder/principal investigator, and this person is listed first, then things go alphabetical. Do not use et al. for this project – list all authors. Most of you should have only one author.) Date created: 05/15/2020 Story text: The cut and pasted version of your pdf, which you uploaded above. Geolocation: UNLV or your zip code Name: Your name (Include even if you want to be anonymous) Email: An email the researchers of the project can contact you at if you have questions What else: THIS IS IMPORTANT. (1) Include hashtags here. Make sure they include #unlv #psc401D #mlphelps #coursework #federalism and then keep going. Do you mention the name of a politician? #therenamehere A location? #nevada #lasvegas (2) If you would prefer your entry to be anonymous, include that information here. (Remember to remove your name from your paper, too.) (3) Any other comments you think would help a librarian curate your materials. After uploading, take a snapshot or screenshot of your confirmation page and upload it to Canvas for extra credit. https://unlv.instructure.com/courses/60820/assignments/676732 I also encourage you to upload all of your notes, the journal entries I asked you to keep, pictures of abandoned places, or any other materials you have that may be of interest to future historians. Each item should be in a separate entry (unless they are linked.) I ask you to include the tag #mlphelps on anything you upload, even not course-related. Again, this part is optional. Still, you did so much work. You might as well put it somewhere for future use. Explore and have fun! Tell your friends to upload stuff! This is academia in action! Questions? Last Class Announcement PSC100
Hi, Rebels. Thank you for your hard work these past five weeks. I have my grades inputted, and I will submit them to UNLV in 24 hours. I am here if you have any questions. I also have some announcements that I think may interest you: Contribute to the Covid-19 Archive: A favor – if your KNPR paper dealt with coronavirus, would you please upload it to the Covid-19 Archive? I encourage you to upload other things that relate to you as a person and Las Vegas. Do you have pictures of an empty Las Vegas? Have you been journaling about how much this sucks? Have you made art inspired by the pandemic? I'm part of a project trying to collect these stories. I encourage you to upload a bit of your life. Tag anything class related with #psc100 and #unlv. I'd like you to include the tag #mlphelps in anything you upload to trace your activity to me. (Don't worry if you do it wrong, real people will review and fix your entry) Please upload your KNPR paper/journal/picture/poem/art/anger here: https://covid19.omeka.net/contribution COVID-19 Testing: Testing for coronavirus is available and free. You do not have to have symptoms or health insurance to get tested. Visit UNLV Medicine's COVID-19 Triage Questionnaire website, Text ''covid'' to 702-744-9722, or call 702-583-4408. I tried out the website before sending it out, and it seems pretty easy. Political Science Club: In Fall 2020, the department of political science will be sponsoring a student-led and student-created Political Science Club. We are now gathering interested members. This club will exist to provide a community for our majors and friends. Anyone is welcome. Join here: https://groups.google.com/a/unlv.edu/forum/#!forum/political-science-club In closing, I offer my sincerest congratulations to our graduating seniors. Look at how far you've come and how much you've overcome! The world is dark and hard, but we've trained you to be a rebel. Be the light. Congratulations again. Phelps #mlphelps -

PSC101 Extra Credit Instructions
Call For Paper Upload to Archive for PSC101: Hi, Rebels. I hear your upset about the KNPR paper. In response, I have given everyone 5% extra credit on that assignment. (I've done this by lowering the points possible to 95 while not adjusting your score. Since the KNPR paper is worth 15% of your grade – no matter how many points I make it worth – this has the effect of giving you 5% extra credit on your paper. Yes, this really is the easiest way.) I also offer you the chance for an extra 5% extra credit on the KNPR paper. I'm working with a project involved in chronicling people's experiences and the like during coronavirus. Right now, you and I are living history. We must keep and curate information from all walks of life (rather than just the elite). To get this 5% of extra credit, you will upload your KNPR assignment to https://covid19.omeka.net/contribution with following tags in the "What else would you like to tell us about this contribution?" field: #unlv #psc100 #mlphelps #knpr #stateofnevada #nevada You may also remove all personal information from your paper and upload it anonymously. If you do not want to contribute to the archive, you may write a 250 to 500-word essay explaining the intent and history of this archival project and upload that in place of the screenshot. TLDR: For extra credit, upload your KNPR paper here: https://covid19.omeka.net/contribution then upload a screenshot of your confirmation page to canvas here: https://unlv.instructure.com/courses/61456/assignments/676624 I need to turn in grades soon, so you only have 24 hours to complete this extra credit. I'm here if you have any questions. Best, Phelps PS: I hope you upload many, many things to this archive, such as journals, explanations of what is going on at work, pictures of empty or strange places, interviews with your parents and friends, etc. I would see us represented. It'll help me if you include #mlphelps in everything you upload. I want to make sure the experience of the individual - you - is not forgotten by history. -
