Essential Worker Hard Hat Sticker
The attached picture is a part of my story during the pandemic. I work in the semi-conductor industry at a site that makes a large amount of important computer chips that are vital throughout the world. Our site was experiencing the pandemic just like everyone else, parallel to a time when everything we manufactured was in extreme demand due to many people working from home, schools teaching from a distance, cars needing chips, and medical equipment in high demand. It was absolutely critical that our site continued to operate safely and could not shut down. Our site and corporate managers made policies to ensure that only the minimum number of critical employees were on site to limit the chances of COVID-19 transmission, while following state-mandated essential rules during the early pandemic shutdowns. I was given a form to travel with and this sticker, additionally our badges would not let us in the site without specific essential worker access. This sticker is a daily reminder of what a crazy time I was part of, working on our site with minimal people pulling together to enable people to have the technology the needed to keep the world moving, from home... -

Working at a bottle shop during COVID19
Throughout the pandemic I worked in a bottle shop owned by Coles in South Melbourne. Sales increased dramatically during the pandemic for two reasons. Firstly, people were worried about Dan Andrews closing bottle shops during lockdown. Secondly, because bars and venues were closing, people had to source their own alcohol. During the interim period when people were discussing what the stage 3 and 4 lockdown would look like customers would come into the shop and ask if we were considered an ‘essential service’. I would respond with “I assume we’re considered essential,” “how would you survive without booze?” and “you’d know more than we do.” During this period of time it seemed like everyone knew a friend or an acquaintance of a friend who was in politics and sharing information about COVID lockdown meetings and what the next stage would involve. The uncertainty of not knowing if I’d be working next week was stressful and caused anxiety and it also caused me to panic buy wine (most of which was not touched). Nonetheless, we stayed open throughout all lockdowns and acquired new customers. During lockdown our sales increased on cocktail ingredients such as triple sec and campari because people started making cocktails at home. During the pandemic customers seemed to have more time to chat and browse and wanted to try new products. but this could also be because they liked the excuse to stay out of home for longer. As well, Coles gave employees who worked from March to May 2020 a one-off thank you bonus for working during the hardest weeks of the pandemic. Working during a pandemic had highs and lows, I was grateful that I didn’t live with my family, so I couldn’t bring home to virus, but it was hard juggling extra hours at work around online uni and other aspects of life. the line
I went to go and get groceries for my family. I pull into the parking lot and I see a line. I have never before seen a line like this to get into a supermarket. The line was stretching all the way down the side of the store and into the parking lot. I got in line. The line moved faster than I thought but it was still really hot outside and I had to wait for about 15 minutes to get into the store. The reason there was such a big line was because of the limit for the amount of people in the store and the social distancing. -

Getting Even Closer Through Schoolwork
This photograph I took is of my three children, on the couch, with the computers they used to finish the school year during the quarantine. I am recently divorced and serve as an active duty service member, 2017 is when we started the separation process. During the process, my ex-wife and I were on good terms and on agreement on everything but one thing, custody. 2017 is also the year I came to Christ and started opening the Bible, learning by reading and listening to His word about the Gospel and what Jesus did for us. This changed my worldview and my entire outlook on life. Towards the end of the year I got orders to go to Parris Island South Carolina to be a Drill Instructor. I was excited and sad at the same time, for I knew there was no way I could continue to take care of the kids while serving this duty. But I knew I could trust God with my kids, even if they weren't in my care and that if I wanted them back that it was just a matter of time (the duty being 3 years long). Fast forward a year and having spent months in the most demanding job I have ever had, I was extremely upset for the living situation my children faced while I strove to lead and mentor future Marines. Conversing with God through prayer I told him how I felt and how I longed to have my children live with me again. Within a week or two, my ex-wife reached out to ask if the kids can fly across the country to live with me! We did the paperwork, and I have had custody since January 2019. During the quarantine, I constantly pondered what the situation would be like for the kids and me if things had not changed for us in 2019. 2019 was the most rewarding and satisfying year thus far for me as a parent. Not only would I not have had that, 2020 probably would have been unbearable for me without the kids. I’d still be a Drill Instructor and my children would be struggling in their studies. Homeschooling the kids opened my eyes to just how much one-on-one time they needed in certain areas. One-on-one time they should have been getting from me as their dad. This quarantine gave me the time I needed to focus even more on the kids and I loved every minute of it, spending literally 24 hours, 7 days a week with them. We struggled at first, this was not the kind of homeschooling I would have preferred to do, but we made it work. I can’t help but feel so blessed and thank God for it. At the same time, my heart goes out to all the families who weren’t/aren’t as lucky. I just happened to be at a point in my life and career, where I could stay home with the kids and not worry about money or losing my job. Our bonds were strengthened and we grew so much closer together, I wish it could continue this way but I look forward to the kids going back to school. I believe that they are ready, if everyone is smart about it then we can make face-to-face classroom instruction a reality. Most schools are not at this point yet and I’m still unsure if it’s going to happen or not as we are weeks away from the first day of school. Whatever the case, I just wanted to tell a bit about my quarantine experience and how my family got to where it was during it. -

Covid as a collage
I wanted to make something that was colorful and cheerful to remind people of the good things that are still happening in the world and that it is okay to find a light even in the darkest of times. None of this is to take away from the grim situation we are facing on a global level. It is hard to ignore the lack of medical supplies, the millions of people who have lost their jobs and that the economy is at a historical low point. I want to continue to help in any way I can, focus on the positive and hope that we as a nation can come together and beat this pandemic. -

Humans of Covid-19 AU: Simon
“In terms of music, the future is very uncertain. For everyone in my band, and friends who play music and survive on it, their livelihood has been turned off at the switch. It's a really weird feeling for society. Everyone in the industry knows how to hustle and change up their thing, but it’s just so uncertain. Many artists have no plans and no clear road ahead. I just started a relationship with someone a couple of months ago. Two weeks later, we went into lockdown. But it’s been really awesome. Having a good person in my life has been really important. When there’s no plans to be made, there’s a sort of a freedom when you can just focus on the day. It is nice to make everything small like that - focusing on the 14-16 waking hours and not expecting too much out of them. Simplicity has been getting me through this. The pot plants are getting a fair amount of attention...” Instagram post on Simon, musician, and his experience during the pandemic, which was created by a psychology student living in Melbourne who was interested to hear about how COVID-19 was impacting on different peoples’ lives. -

COVID-19 places Iran’s nomadic pastoralists at a crossroads
"Nomadic pastoralists in Iran play an important role in national food security and sovereignty.1 Since the arrival of COVID-19, they have been deeply concerned about the impact that the pandemic is likely to have on them. Their recently established national platform, the Union of Indigenous Nomadic Tribes of Iran (UNINOMAD),2 is taking action. UNINOMAD outlined its members’ concerns and proposed solutions in a letter sent to key national authorities on 10 March. We will outline the main points of the letter and reflect on what the overall situation might mean for nomadic pastoralism in Iran." -

Shakespeare's Globe Faces Permanent Closure in London Without Emergency Funding
The coronavirus pandemic has already caused the shutdown of theaters in the West End and on Broadway. I have included this because there is a great fear of losing theatre companies and venues during the crisis. Funding is non-existent and actors, technicians and all others who rely on these theaters as resources for making a living will be left unemployed and searching for work in an even more saturated market. -

Teachers in Fairfield are required to clean out their classrooms with school closure for the remainder of the year. Daycare's are closed and many teachers are forced to bring their children with them to pack up their classroom. This U.S. History classroom is normally full of vibrant students. The distance requirements in the district mandate that educators pre-schedule pack-up times so a limited number of teachers are on campus at a time. Canyon Bell (Pictured) is helping mommy clean. Go Back to Normal!!!
I have learned in this quarantine that is you want to do something and not be lazy, then you must attack it head on and just go for it. The hardest part of accomplishing something is definitely starting. If you can start the thing you want, then you are more motivated to finish it because you have already spent time and effort trying to accomplish the thing you want. Even when I get out of this quarantine, I am going to try to apply this to my daily life. I really wonder when things are going to get back to normal, or if things will go back to normal. This might be the new normal which is a scary thought. I hope this is not the new normal because I had a plan for my future. Well kind of, but this is definitely not what I had planned. I am trying to remember that it is not about what I want for my future or what I think is supposed to happen in my life. It is about God’s plan and what he wants to happen in my life. *Original text in Creator: Nicole Dumitrascu #LSMS #NSD -

Tryto keep it light
Why can't we all try to have a little fun despite living through a pandemic. As an employee of a large liquor retailer I think that I come into contact with more people than average amidst the quarantine. Despite being at risk due to my asthma I have never really felt scared to go to work and interact with lots of people. I have seen this situation bring out the good and the bad in people but try not to pass judgement as I don't always know (or really care for that matter) what the customers are going through. But as I think about the most memorable experiences, they're predominantly good ones. I remember one customer who used a jock strap as a face mask. I hope it was clean. I've heard people trying to joke around and keep the mood light. Overall I have been surprised by the people I interact with for the most part. -

The Impact of Virtual Story Time During Coronavirus Stay-at-Home Orders
The Impact of Virtual Story Time During Coronavirus Stay-at-Home Orders COVID-19 has put the world on pause in many ways, including forcing people to remain in their houses for months on end. While staying inside and away from others is for the safety of oneself as well as their communities, it’s easy to feel the urge to leave. In order to stay inside and keep everyone safe, then, it’s crucial that we all find ways to fill our time. For students, this means trying to navigate online classes and keep up with friends that they otherwise would have been seeing everyday. For some adults, this means trying to balance a job that is now entirely online with taking care of the family. For many, it means desperately filling out unemployment forms and waiting in line for hours on end to be given the food they need to feed their kids. This time at home is different for everyone and by no means easy for anyone, but one of the most commonly talked about groups right now is families with young kids. Not only do the parents not have to manage their kids all day long – feeding them, helping them with online classes even as early as preschool, and keeping them entertained – while also trying to handle their own jobs, but many of the kids don’t even understand what’s going on. As young kids, they want to be able to go to school and play with their friends, but they’re now restricted to their houses like everyone else. In order to help parents and entertain the kids, then, many teachers and celebrities are recording videos of themselves reading in order to create a virtual story time. While some of the videos are meant to teach the kids about why they have to stay home and what’s happening in the world, most are meant to simply entertain the kids and give their parents a little break. As insignificant as it may seem for a teacher, librarian, or celebrity to record themself reading a book, hundreds, if not thousands, of people have started doing it and it serves as the perfect time of relief for both young kids and their parents. Purpose of COVID-19 by Jennifer Shanteau
This virus is an awakening. We saw how much better our planet is for just this short time without our usual insults. I swear the birds sing louder. We are discovering that some of us are very strong- heroes. We started to think, and create, and find ways to change, and move forward positively. We shared food, and masks, and hope. There were sadly also those who haven’t grown, and didn’t want to see the virus, so they looked away, unable to handle it, causing many deaths. These same people want everything to go back to the way it was. The way, if you are paying attention, it can never be again. They are like toddlers without their binky, having tantrums, frightened of moving forward to our inevitable new reality. We will never have an opportunity like this again to really see ourselves. We were forced to look in the mirror. We can’t look away. We have to fix our face. -

Face Masks as Fashion
One of the most interesting things to watch during this pandemic for me is the rise of designer face masks. Ever since the CDC advised personal protective gear (PPE) to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, people have begun making DIY face masks or purchasing them from retailers ranging from small to large. There have been luxury face masks around before the COVID-19 pandemic—the most notable example in my mind is the all-Gucci outfit singer Billie Eilish wore to the 2020 Grammys that included a mask covered in the Gucci logo, which I think was simply for fashion despite the Grammys occurring in late January, around when people in the United States began to be on alert for the novel coronavirus. I had seen some designer face masks worn in photos compilations of “Instagram rich kids,” who are usually children of business moguls, celebrities, or royals, but had never seen them reach enough popularity to be worn by people in my social stratosphere (white & upper-middle class/upper-class) until now. What has been most fascinating to me are designer face masks produced by individuals, not by these large fashion labels. During this pandemic, most major luxury brands are not selling face masks. Instead, most “designer” face masks being sold are made by individuals profiting off the prestige or popularity of a brand. For example, on Etsy, where searching “designer face mask” yields 14,000 items for sale, people are selling “designer-inspired” or “stylish design” face masks covered in logos by companies such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, or Chanel. Another example is face masks created using actual designer fabric, which seem to be much less common than the designer rip-offs. One of my neighbors who owns and runs a high-end boutique created a small batch of face masks using vintage designer fabric from similar brands like Hermes and Louis Vuitton. When my mother and I ran into her on a walk, as she showed us the masks, she half-joked to us that we needed a “going-out” mask, a simple mask for going providing protection that you don’t mind getting messed up, and a “social” mask, a “fancy” mask like hers meant to be seen by others. I have not seen any “social” masks or designer masks myself being used out in the world (granted, I try not to leave the house as much as possible), but the popularity of designer masks can be clearly seen online. The fact that most of these “designer” masks are projects made by small creators is incredibly fascinating to me. The social capital that comes with owning something with designer logos is so strong that it is persisting during a time that people are going out of their way to create designer-rip offs for products that are not even on sale right now. I initially thought that because the pandemic we are living through is such a “time of exception” that people would be so concerned with just surviving that any social capital that comes with owning luxury clothing would be eschewed, but instead people are finding new ways to flex their wealth. Because most of these designer-logo masks sold by individuals are affordable for almost everyone, it will be interesting to see as time goes on how the amount of social capital that comes with owning one of these masks changes.
