HHS, AstraZeneca Speed COVID-19 Vaccine Development; First Doses Due in October
The Trump administration announced early today that HHS and AstraZeneca will collaborate on a coronavirus disease vaccine called AZD1222. A statement released from HHS said the partnership will make “at least 300 million doses” of the vaccine available, “with the first doses delivered as early as October 2020.” The vaccine is one originally developed at the University of Oxford; the university and AstraZeneca announced a global development agreement for the vaccine on April 30. In its own statement early today, AstraZeneca said a phase 1/2 clinical trial of the vaccine began last month to assess its safety immunogenicity and efficacy in over 1000 healthy volunteers, who are 18 to 55 years of age. These volunteers are all in the United Kingdom. Late-stage trials would begin in several countries based on these results, the statement said. According to HHS, the agreement between AstraZeneca and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), an agency within HHS, would essentially kick start manufacturing of the doses while phase 3 clinical studies are under way this summer, involving 30,000 volunteers in the United States. BARDA will spend up to $1.2 billion for research, technology transfer, and scaled-up manufacturing, Emergency use authorization or licensure from FDA would be needed for the vaccine to reach the public, the statement said. As for the timeline, “Early milestones enable BARDA and AstraZeneca to determine how the program progresses forward.” “This contract with AstraZeneca is a major milestone in Operation Warp Speed’s work toward a safe, effective, widely available vaccine by 2021,” said HHS Secretary Alex Azar. “Getting a vaccine to the American public as soon as possible is one part of President Trump’s multi-faceted strategy for safely reopening our country and bringing life back to normal, which is essential to Americans’ physical and mental well-being in so many ways.” “The Trump Administration is making multiple major investments in developing and manufacturing promising vaccines long before they’re approved so that a successful vaccine will reach the American people without a day wasted,” Azar said. Besides the BARDA agreement, AstraZeneca said it has reached deals with the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), the Vaccine Alliance and the World Health Organisation (WHO), to ensure the fair allocation and distribution of the vaccine around the world. AstraZeneca is also in discussions the Serum Institute of India and other potential partners to boost production and distribution. AstraZeneca also holds a major stake in Moderna Therapeutics, which announced earlier this week its experimental vaccine had produced antibodies in small group of healthy volunteers. -

“Savior or strongman? El Salvador's millennial president defies courts and Congress on coronavirus response”
Aside from being the death of hundreds of thousands, COVID-19 may also be the impetus for the decline of democracy in El Salvador, one of the smallest countries in Latin America. In an article for CNN, journalist Patrick Oppmann provides a brief summary of how El Salvador’s populist president, Nayib Bukele, is taking advantage of the pandemic to attack the nation’s political institutions and consolidate personal power. Ever since he was elected as a political outsider in 2019, President Nayib Bukele has utilized social media to attack his political opponents and journalists, who he believes are obstacles to his personal agenda. He also marched soldiers into the National Assembly to intimidate lawmakers into signing a bill to increase police and military funding, arousing the fear of those who remembered El Salvador’s history of military dictatorships. The emergence of COVID-19 has given Bukele the opportunity to further attack the nation’s institutions and to consolidate his own power. He placed stringent quarantine measures and deployed military policemen on the streets to catch violators, who would then be sent to quarantine centers. Bukele also used the pandemic to go after gangs such as MS-13, whose members were rounded up and taken to densely packed prisons and stripped naked. This particular measure not only violated human rights, it also harmed efforts to reintegrate gang members, according to a former gang member interviewed by Oppmann. Despite these heavy handed measures, Bukele and his administration maintain high approval ratings. Bukele has leveraged this high approval rating to ignore El Salvador’s Supreme Court and National Assembly. The former ruled that he had no authority to extend lockdown orders, while the former proposed a bill to reopen the nation’s economy ahead of the reopening date scheduled by Bukele. Rather than acceding to their demands, Bukele had instead taken to social media, castigating both of these institutions as unrepresentative and illegitimate. Oppmann ends his article by noting that, as the pandemic continues, there will most likely be more clashes between El Salvador’s young, populist president and the nation’s other institutions. -

Covid Morning Routine
“Morning Routine” is an ad I created about Covid-19. The reason I chose this medium is that many advertisements on the internet and TV are related to the virus. “Morning Routine” is about my brother's routine and how he gets ready in the morning. It seems like a normal routine like everyone else which is to wake up, brush your teeth, put on clothes, put your shoes on and go out to the rest of their day. In the end, it shows a close of him putting on a mask. In the news, there is a lot of talk about when normal is coming back. Countries all over the world were under lockdown to prevent the spread of Covid-19. In Minnesota, the confirmed cases are not as extreme other states like New York. My personal experience with Covid-19 is doing my part of trying to make things better. In my family, many are nurses so are making sacrifices and working hard. I am still in college trying to become a nurse so staying home is doing my part to make their job easier. On social media, many of my peers and others are complaining about when all of this will be over. People are going out acting like life is normal by hanging with friends without social distancing and not wearing masks. As time goes by, many countries are now easing lockdown trying to bring up the economy against, but the consequences are increasing the chance of the virus spreading more. Although I try to stay home as much as possible, I have uncles and aunts that are getting older and are at a higher risk by the coronavirus so I grocery shop for them every week and deliver them. When I go to grocery stores, I get very anxious because many people are not wearing masks. I don’t want to be the one responsible for getting corona and getting my family sick. The coronavirus is going to stay and be here for a while until a vaccine is found and produced on a large scale. This in my opinion is the new normal because I don’t think we will ever go back to normal. This pandemic has and will keep changing the way we live in the future. -

Groovin' Through It All
A longboard and a kayak: two objects created in order to give the sense of fluid movement amongst a sea of chaotic concrete and wobbling waters- and that is my experience in this pandemic to a T. In the beginning of the pandemic, my family chose to keep ourselves isolated from other people and the possibility of encountering COVID, as my sister and mom had immunodeficiencies. Me, being an extrovert, found this so incredibly hard to be apart from my friends, my rocks, the people who make me feel as though life has color in a scheme of black and white. The first time that I was allowed to see people was when we all met in a parking lot, staying 6 feet apart, and longboarding. A segway. A form of connection. A light. A board. Almost every night after that, I would go on rides around my neighborhood, feeling the curve of each carve, the wind whistling through my hair, the last taste of the golden sun fresh on the tip of my tongue, and the feeling of being a part of something greater that just me in that moment. The same goes for my kayak- the outdoors, and people. For me it really seems to all come back to nature and my loved ones, I guess that is what fills my heart with happiness. -

Reopening Perspectives
As States and businesses across the country reopen, there appears to be a divide on what is best practice. One camp is of the opinion that we should go back to how we were pre-quarantine, and should treat the virus as something that has passed. The other camp desires a reopening that is done cautiously, guided by medical/scientific data. Memes are reflecting the divide. -

How i think about Stay Home Law
in my opinion, the first method in the face of the outbreak is the most effective, the most secure for people's lives. First of all, pneumonia with the new coronavirus infection can be transmitted through respiratory droplets and exposure. Spread by respiratory droplets, such as patient sneezing, coughing, talking droplets, exhaling gas close contact, can lead to the continuous spread of the disease, or the patient sneezing, coughing, talking droplets mixed in the air, the formation of aerosols, inhaled by others can also lead to infection; Therefore, only the implementation of home order, everyone wearing a mask, increase the intensity of testing, is the most effective approach. Many people feel that the home order violates human rights. I think it is selfish of those who pursue so-called freedom in this outbreak, because at a time when countless health care workers are saving lives on the front lines of the epidemic, and these so-called freedoms are demonstrating in the streets, not only for themselves, but for the health of others. So I think Method One is not only not a violation of human rights, but rather a responsibility to the lives of the inhabitants. And the implementation of the home order is not only an inhuman decree, but every person who abides by the home order is contributing to society. -

Tensions Over the Keystone XL Pipeline Heat Up During Pandemic as Tribes Insist on Coronavirus Checkpoints
“As construction related to the Keystone XL pipeline begins in South Dakota, the checkpoints add tension to an already-rocky relationship between the Republican governor and tribes that have been outspoken opponents of the pipeline. The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, which has set up coronavirus checkpoints, does not allow vehicles from oil companies to pass through their land. The proposed pipeline route skirts tribal land, but construction companies could use the highways for transporting supplies.” -

The rules or guidelines for early release are different everywhere and as this article explains seem to change constantly. While two well connected men have been released the article explores the difficulty regular prisoners have in being released. -

'Bar" trivia through Zoom
We used to do bar trivia in Redondo Beach, CA every Wednesday night. Now that everything is closed, the quizmaster, John, from King Trivia decided to do events through Zoom. It was surprisingly easy! The quizmaster would bring us all into a room of about 50 different screens (many were couples sharing a webcam). A couple people were in Australia and Costa Rica, which they wouldn't normally be able to do at an in-person trivia! Once all the questions were asked in the joint room, our teams were sent to our own 'breakout' rooms where we could discuss the questions and come up with answers. This night was also costume night so several people were dressed up, though by this point near the end of the game only a few of us still had our costumes on. We didn't win but we had a good time! -
