Lining up to Shop
This image shows a line outside of a Walmart in Katy, Texas. During the spring and summer of 2020, I would make it part of my routine to visit the grocery store at 7:00am every Friday morning. People would line up outside of the doors waiting for them to open. It was too early for anyone to talk. I'm sure people rather not talk to one another because we were to remain 6 feet apart-- with duct tape lines suggested on the sidewalk. Plus, standing in the southeast Texas humidity made us all melt under the masks. Once the doors opened, people would grab a cart and rush in. From there, it would be a race to the back of the store where the water, toilet paper, milk, and paper towels were stored. However, my prize was disinfectant wipes. The cleaning aisle was my first stop every Friday morning. Very rarely would I get lucky and any Clorox or Lysol wipes would be on the shelves. Today, I have about a dozen containers on a shelf in my garage... and I continue to buy more. -

CLASS CERTIFICATE
The course was on knowing about the virus, how it is transmitted, who is at risk, as well as precautions and social distancing. It also covered how to deal with Covid reporting and is a preparation for someone interested in working for public health in Covid reporting and contacting those who may have been exposed. Again this is important to me because it's about the exposure of persons to the virus and myself, my spouse and friends are members of at least one high risk group. -

Camp Evolution
In high school, I worked for South Windsor Parks and Recreation as a program leader for the before and after school program, as well as a camp counselor during the summers. On March 12, 2020, Governor Ned Lamont announced that schools will be closed beginning that Monday, March 16, for at least two weeks due to COVID-19. This included my program, putting me and all of my coworkers out of a job during this time (and, eventually, the rest of the school year), and taking away the childcare that so many South Windsor families depended on, including my own. I was a senior in high school when this happened, trying to work as much as possible to save up for college. My department was working hard to create an alternative within our state's guidelines to remain open and operating without compromising the safety of our employees and families. Unfortunately, COVID-19 was too unpredictable at the time and we had no idea how to protect everyone other than shutting down completely. For months, my coworkers and I heard nothing from our supervisors, as they had no new information to give us. On May 22, 2020, we were sent this flyer with information about a modified summer camp for 2020, called "Camp Evolution," with guidelines covering group sizes, social distancing expectations, and mask mandates. Many former counselors made the decision to not return for camp, including myself, as I lived with my grandparents at the time who, in addition to being in their 80s, also had preexisting conditions. I also know of many program leaders who will not be returning to our before and after school program due to similar concerns. The camps and programs have also been finding themselves short on participants, as most families in South Windsor are concerned about the virus, and many are currently working from home, so they no longer require the same childcare as before. For many families with parents who are not able to work remotely, such as my own, are thankful for these program reopenings, as well as the smaller group numbers that come with them. I am proud of my department for working so hard to keep their employees and families safe while also continuing to provide services for those most in need. -

Social Distancing Circles
San Francisco parks are the cultural heart of the city. From Golden Gate Park to Dolores Park to Washington Square Park, each park has a unique personality. On a sunny day, which can be rare in this foggy city by the Bay, parks are typically full of locals sharing picnics, music and lawn games. A day at a San Francisco park when the sun is shining reminds many city dwellers of the reason why they continue to live in a city largely covered in fog for most of the year. As California began to lift the shelter-in-place orders at the end of May, San Francisco residents encountered social distancing circles. These circles were painted on the lawn of San Francisco's most popular parks to remind and encourage visitors to keep their distance from others during the COVID-19 pandemic. Both the San Francisco Chronicle and Reuters chose to highlight social distancing circles in San Francisco's famous Dolores Park. I am at once impressed by the measures the city is taking to encourage social distancing and the apparent respect that park patrons have for the social distancing circles. And also shocked at how many San Francisco residents are choosing to visit parks during a pandemic. -

Quarantine Centre in Nagaland for returnees from other States in India
The Government of Nagaland in an effort to prevent the spread of Covid-19 has implemented a statewide lockdown and also initiated the establishment of Observatory Quarantine Centres for native residents who are returning back to Nagaland from other States across India. The returnees must observe a mandatory 14 day quarantine period before travelling on next to their villages or rural home towns. Seen here are returnees who arrived around 9 PM (IST) by train from Chennai, Tamil Nadu waiting in line to enter their Quarantine Centre at Tetso College, Dimapur, Nagaland. They will live here for 14 days or more under strict vigilance and undergo tests to determine whether they are Covid -19 positive. If any of the returnees are tested positive, they will then be shifted to the Covid-19 hospital for further treatment. -

Class of 2021 wins
Junior year is suppose to be the hardest but because of the covid 19, my classes are online and school was even easier. There was less homework and some of my teachers didn't even give us tests anymore. For ap Calc, our teacher planned to give us 8 tests in one month to prepare us for the ap test, but we got to skip that. Ap tests is only 45 minutes and Juniors were able to also skip the standardrized test. -

Great Grandmother's First Zoom Meeting
The woman in the middle of the screen is my great-grandmother, who is 101 years old. Because of the outbreak, she has been unable to meet all her grandchildren in China, Jarkata, America, and Singapore. After this Zoom meeting, she called my grandfather and cried, because as a 101-year-old, she couldn't understand why we were meeting this way. She was frightened and uneasy. This story is significant to me because I am grateful that I have such an amazing great-grandmother, and it has been an emotional period for all of us. -

Government operation to bring home pandemic-stranded Canadians almost complete, says MP
This news article chronicles the effort to bring home Canadians abroad in the face of the pandemic and tells the stories of a few individuals who returned home. Prime Minister Just Trudeau, speaking on behalf of the government, suggested any Canadians abroad who wished to come home at the beginning of the pandemic should attempt to do so by March 23 and the government organized flights to get those in countries no longer serviced by regular commercial flights or negotiated with governments under lock down to allow Canadians out. -

Desolation
A school graduation is supposed to be unforgettable - people from all over coming together to celebrate a moment that most students cherish for the rest of their lives. Now with the pandemic, we are forced to graduate within the comforts of our home, yet we feel more disconnected than ever. This picture represents the great memories we made in high school, the great experiences we lost, and the great friends and family that surround and propel us in life. To the class of 2020, these are not easy times, but we will get through them. With your leadership and spirit, the world will be stronger than ever. The object is a photograph, and I took this picture at my high school. -

Bots
I’ve been struggling to understand the motivations and views of pandemic skeptics. I found this article interesting and provocative. I’m wondering if the echo chamber of misinformation that is social media is being aided and abetted by trolls with bots. I speculate these are the same folks who supported Trump in the last election but there does not appear to be clear evidence to support that. -

Root canal during the pandemic
On April 8, 2020, I had to have a root canal redone. I had been in self-isolation since March 17, and it was unnerving to leave the house to have this procedure done since I have asthma. Catching Covid-19 would not be suitable for me, so having to lay with my mouth wide open for an extended period was not ideal. Unfortunately, the procedure could not wait. When I arrived at the dentist's office, my temperature was checked before I was allowed to exit my car. I wore a cloth mask into the building where I was required to wash my hands before interacting with the staff. Once I was taken to the back, I had to rinse with alcohol-based mouth wash for no less than 30 seconds. During the procedure, the endodontist wore a face shield and mask. Air was circulated over my face and away from both the dental assistant and endodontist towards the open door. The procedure took about an hour since they chose to examine the failing root canal, refill it, and seal the crown all in the same day. Typically this would require two visits, one to check and refill the root canal and one to seal the crown. After the procedure was done, I was allowed to wash my hands before putting my mask back on and then rewash my hands before exiting the office. Once in my car, I used hand sanitizer before driving home. By far, the strangest visit I've had to the dentist, but they made sure to take every precaution they could to keep their patients safe. -

My Family's Masks
Here are all the masks my family of four has. In the little jar to the left there are about four or five masks. We got almost all of them for free, except for four that I got from my friend who is using his dad's factory to make them. The company is called Jeffery Press. My friends' masks are called Face Armour. To be honest the price is a little high but that's just business. The painting masks on the left are from probably ten or eleven years ago when my dad redid the upstairs. The rest of the masks were gifts from my mom's cousin's wife who is a fashion designer for kids. The surgical mask was a graduation gift from my great aunt and uncle. -

It is extremely weird to think...
It is extremely weird to think that we are living through history right now. I mean, yes, we always are, but this time it is different. This is one of those things that future generations will study in their history classes. Countless terms have been manipulated into our everyday speech and obsessively ingrained in our thoughts: Pandemic, Coronavirus, Quarantine, Social Distance… These titles which seem to be taking over news headlines and social media will end up only a chapter in history. The coronavirus won’t be the main focus of our lives anymore. Right now that sounds impossible, but in time, the obsession will expend itself. It will dissipate, and somehow, things will go back to normal. So, how will we keep history in check? How will we make sure all of our stories go unforgotten? Everyone misses life right now. COVID-19 has killed millions and damaged families and changed all of our lives. Information surrounding the pandemic is reported 24/7. There is never a minute of silence. Frankly, it really depresses me. Just waiting for good news, I focus so much on the most recent developments and news stories. All I really seek, though, is to skip forward to better times. I am a junior in high school. I just turned 17 last month, and I could never explain how exciting the prospect of going back to school is or to even think about attending college next fall! Yet, I’m so nervous that all those experiences are going to be somehow lesser. There is just so much to look forward to, and I’m really scared that I won’t get to fully experience any of it. That no one will. I’m preoccupied with this notion that time is fleeting. However short or long my life may be, it pains me to know that I’ll never be able to fully live it. It’s just not possible. I have to try my best, but life really is too short. That’s why you have to live every single day and make the most of all that comes your way. I take these months, and I’ve used them lazily and without passion. Sure, this time has provided me with college research opportunities and family time, but I want to be out there doing something. I don’t quite know what that means, but it’s more of a feeling rather than a set idea. And not being able to do anything...it sucks. It spawns feelings of purposelessness. But in truth, I only hope to somehow come out stronger and happier. Despite the tragedies that plague us, I’ve made it my mission to find the good in every single day. And I can only hope that all of us can uncover these moments together. To better times. XOXO. Sophie :) -

Life After
This is a picture of my young sister. I am helping her to wash her hands, feet, and her legs before she go into the house. Whenever we want to go outside, we only walk in our community. When we want to go home, we first change clothes and wash all parts of our body that may contact with the outside so as to prevent infection.
