Why We've Created New Language for Coronavirus
Language is ever evolving, and an event such as the COVID-19 pandemic has certainly led to new words and phrases in the English language and to new definitions for existing words and phrases. It remains to be seen which words that were coined during the pandemic will survive long-term and which ones will remain in a dictionary rather than in regular usage. This article, describing the English language from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), describes changes in British, Indian, Canadian, and Australian English during these pandemic times. It discusses the speed of the linguistic change brought about by the pandemic and the coining of new words and phrases and new definitions of existing words and phrases. -

Who wants to be a quarantin-a-aire?
There was a show on TV called Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? It was a quiz show with relatively easy questions. This meme mimics the show and asks what the scariest part of 2020 is. The choices are murder hornets, Covid-19, toilet paper, or Carole Baskin, who ran an "big cat" animal sanctuary and had a reality show play during the beginning of the quarantine. You can see that the constant is having trouble deciding. -

Killer Hornets!
"The next disaster" is a popular theme on social media and in conversations. The latest one was murder hornets that were predicted to come our way. So, naturally, people made memes. What else would be expected? -

Toilet Paper Is Your Prize!
Of course, you've heard all about the toilet paper shortage, the hoarding of it, and the bare shelves where toilet paper used to be. This is a humorous meme offering toilet paper as the prize--if you can grab it with the big claw. These games are notoriously difficult to win with, too. -

Grocery Store Patrons Do not Comply with Social Distancing
Guys! We're supposed to maintain social distancing! Some people, no matter what, just will NOT obey the rule. People crowd you wherever you go. Especially in checkout lines, people tend to crowd close. Once I worked up my nerve and told the gentleman behind me to please step back. He immediately lifted his arms about a foot out from his sides and started taking giant steps backwards, lifting up his knees, until he reached the wall of the store. Jeez! -

Nearly Empty San Francisco Street

Empty Golden Gate Bridge
As the San Francisco Bay Area's shelter-in-place orders began to relax, a friend ventured into the city for a drive. She took this video of the light traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge. The Golden Gate Bridge is typically packed with cars. This is the lightest amount of traffic I have personally ever seen on the bridge. -

A Timeline of the Humpback Whale of the St-Lawrence
Also available in french/ Aussi disponible en francais. A definitive timeline of sightings of the humpback whale which frequented populated areas of the Saint Lawrence River (including Montreal and Quebec City) between May 24 and June 9, when its carcass was discovered. It was written by the Group for Research and Education on Marine Mammals (GREMM) which looks to follow and preserve the marine mammals of the St-Lawrence ecosystem in their online magazine Whales Online/Baleines en Direct. The rare siting of so large a whale so far upstream brought joy to those who witnessed it and contributed to the overall feeling that nature is flourishing as traffic decreases due to the pandemic. However, the whale's necropsy showed it likely died after being struck by one of the large vessels which ply the St-Lawrence regularly. -

Date in Dog Park
These photos were taken in a dog park in an early morning. This is the first time I went out for a walk with my boyfriend so early to watch the sunrise although we didn't see the sun on that cloud day. It was fun to take off my mask on the street without people to breathe in the fresh air during this hard time. Covid-19 changes our way to date, from city to wilderness, from theatre, coffee shop to the parks and lakes. -

Cover of the New York Times
As a high school history teacher I collect newspaper articles for my students to later explore. The 5/24/2020 New York Times cover had the lists of victims of Covid-19. The paper sold out early. Soap
These soaps will serve as favors for my upcoming bridal shower. I wanted to give something that was useful, rather than something that would be thrown away as soon as they left. What could be more needed currently during a pandemic than soap? This birthed the idea to make individual soaps to give to all the attendees to take home and use after being out with people all day. -

I'm Fine...really
This was a hard one to share, but something I wanted to contribute. This is a photo of the aftermath from a breakdown after being frustrated from working full time, having a ton of school work to do, and not being able to leave the house other than to grocery shop. I don't tend to catch dramatics, but I felt that this caught a real moment. -

Socially Distanced Best Friends
After months of our parents not letting us see eachother due to COVID-19, me and my best friend decided to hang out in my front yard. She brought over boba and food from Ding Tea (our favorite), and we ate together 6 feet apart, as we watched the sun go down. When we decided to get near eachother for pictures, we were cautious and made sure to put on masks to be safe. -

Indigenous families given new lease on life as pandemic opens up housing options
This article relays an unexpected benefit to the pandemic. Because more people are staying put, putting off moving for work and school, among other reasons, there has been a downturn in the rental market. This has opened up better and more plentiful housing options for those struggling to find accommodations for large families when builders and landlords prefer smaller single or two bedroom units. Centres which aid women leaving abusive relationships and indigenous people (or both), such as the Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health, are finding this a particular boon, allowing them to clear their waiting lists/backlogs and find housing for clients previously in limbo. -

A stronger conversion to faith
Today I curled my hair and wore earrings. A first in many weeks! Sunday worship is a huge part of our family life. We practice our faith daily and gather weekly with The Church of Jesus of Christ of Latter Day Saints. Of course with quarantine, like everyone else, we can not gather. But it hasn’t stopped us from our worship. In our home, we continue to dress weekly for the Sabbath, mostly because my husband and oldest son are able to administer the sacrament for us, which we hold very sacred. After a short intimate family worship service we have an opportunity to hear uplifting words recorded and shared online from members of our local congregations. With days that mesh together, having a defining Sunday is refreshing and keeps my soul uplifted. I grew up in the LDS faith however, I had to come to decide on my own and gain my own testimony in it’s teachings. We honor the Bible and have a deep testimony in Jesus Christ as our Lord, Savior, and Redeemer. We also believe The Book of Mormon to be the word of God and goes hand in hand with our beloved Bible giving added testimony of the glories of Christ. I don’t recall one moment in my life that I can define as my conversion moment, as others may. I do remember moments where I had to question myself and my beliefs and decide who and what I wanted to follow and believe. My conversion has been a lifelong journey and process and everyday I draw closer to God is a day my testimony is strengthened. I have enjoyed this time of intimate worship with my family. As we slowly emerge from our cocoons I have heard others are rejoining their faiths of worship. It will be a little slower here in Belgium before we can return to our church family because of government safety measures. I do look forward to that day when we can meet and embrace again. But this time with my children has been one of the best faith building times in my life. (With a stubborn 6 year old and teenage attitudes one can’t help but question their why😉) And for that, I am completely grateful. The virus hasn’t been all that bad. ❤️ -

Enjoy your memorial bbq
When I saw an image of this front page on the internet, I thought it was from 100 years ago. And then I got my copy. Every year on the date, the 3,000 victims of September 11th are read aloud at the World Trade Center. It takes 3 hours. If we were to read the names of each person who has died of Covid-19 so far, it would take over 4 days, without stopping. It would cover each Sunday issue for over the next two years. Today I read 1% of those names. Each of those names was allowed half a sentence to describe them. Half a sentence for a lifetime on the front page of The New York Times. I picked out some of my favorites: -“We called him the grand Poobah” -her backyard birds ate right from her hand -could fix almost anything -first black woman to graduate Harvard Law school -quick with his fists in the ring -her will was indomitable -he could spit a watermelon seed halfway across a double lot -agent who turned on the CIA -her favorite quote was ‘I am as good as you are, and as bad as I am’ -cancer survivor who lived as a deacon -nothing delighted him more than picking up the bill -saved 56 Jewish families from the Gestapo -could be a real jokester -thought it was important to know a person’s life story -maestro of a steel-pan band -saw friends at their worst and made them their best -engineer behind the first 200mph stock car -discovered his true calling when he started driving a school bus -made the best Baklava ever -emergency room doctor who died in his husband’s arms -leader in integrating schools -architect behind Boston’s City Hall -shared his produce with food banks and neighbors -family believed she would have lived the traditional Navajo lifespan of 102 years. -loved his wife and said ‘yes dear’ a lot -mother to a generation of AIDS patients -worked long hard hours and still made time for everyone -walked across the Golden Gate Bridge on opening day -liked his bacon and hash browns crispy -more adept than many knew -would stay awake the whole night shift because she didn’t want anyone to die alone -freed from life in prison -her last words were ‘thank you’ . . . Seven small towns I thought no one else had heard of. Six women who reminded me of my mother. Five people my age. Four holocaust survivors. Three 9/11 responders. Two couples who died together. One person I’ve met. And a 5 year old girl. They didn't get a funeral. They didn't get to say goodbye. I've been in my apartment for 71 days. I've cried four times. Three of those times, was while I read this. Have fun at your barbecue. -

The new normal
Shelter in place has been lifted. I decided to go inside Starbucks for the first time in months. The chairs and tables are now against the wall. There is a path marked for patrons that guide people from the door, then counter, then pick up, then exit out a different door. There is plexi-glass around the entire work area. The employees have a log-in station by the front door where they must wait until another barista comes to take their temperature before they are allowed to work (with a mask). -

Toilet paper is coming back to the shelves (Tokyo)
I noticed at my local supermarket yesterday that, seemingly all of a sudden, toilet paper and facial tissues are totally in-stock. Here in Tokyo, it was hard to find such things (not impossible - check three or four stores and you'd find one package) for quite a while. And now, boom, no problem. Couldn't find any pasta sauce today, though. -

Social dynamics of online learning
This is a model of the social dynamics of online learning, especially human interaction via Zoom meetings. This is a common model adopted by the university. Notice how smoothly inputs are converted into outputs, thus pointing the efficiency and productivity of the overall system. As university administration have shown, the success of this model (for capital gains) can be shown in its applicability to all aspects of teaching and learning. It should also be said that a pandemic presents great opportunity for more intensive technologisation/bureaucratisation of all aspects of human life, and the extent to which communication and exchange of information can be ordered into narrow channels of utility and efficiency. -

Trump's golf game in the days of COVID19
It is a satire piece demonstrating Trump's selfish handling of the pandemic for personal gain, while spending more time and effort on golf than doing his job. It is an indictment of Trump's handling of the crisis and the publics growing view of his performance. -

Analei _________, my best friend 03/12/2019 imagine was taken
These photographs explain how someone can be taken from you so fast, as I said earlier Analei did not pass, she is very fortunate because of how many people have been losing their lives due to COVID-19. When I heard the news I freaked out I called her mother and asked her if she was okay, the crazy part is she thinks she got it at a party she went to which what’s weird is that I went to it as well, I was fine and she wasn’t, I personally felt guilty and I was really sad for days and made sure she was okay, since so many people have been getting tested for corona virus the government were very low on test, which meant she had to wait and thankfully found out it was certainly positive, a week has gone by and she was starting to get better, I was so glad. The second photograph is a picture of a doctor, and this shows how every nurse, and doctors have risked their lives for us every day and you start to really see who’s the hero. *The primarily responsible for making this resource would be me, Sofia __________ I am coming to everyone as a human to make sure everyone is safe and healthy *In this time, March 2019 was the month of our graduation into becoming adults and into college students ready for a life, I put a photograph of my friend Analei who was recently tested positive for COVID-19, she is a amazing person and usually most of the bad luck always comes to her for some reason. *Analei _________ and Sofia __________ also her mom ___________ ____________ *The genre of this resource is to show how someone can be taken from you so easily, (even though Analei did not pass) we all had a bit of a scare when we heard the news, her mom took this picture of her as a graduation announcement, little did we know this would happen in our world.
