Faith and Values: A Buddhist Response to the Coronavirus Pandemic
This article speaks to a specifically Buddhist response to the pandemic. The monk in this article offers ways to deal with the pandemic from a Buddhist perspective. While Buddhism is a specific worldview, the advice given in this article can be used by all people. Thinking about questions concerning life and death should be confronted and asked rather than cowering away. From the response given, the pandemic should teach people to love and care for all, even in the midst of a deadly virus. -

Family Day Activity
This comes from the #WendeOnline programming that started at the beginning of COVID-19. One facet of #WendeOnline is a monthly family day. They hosted a family day in pre-COVID times so this is an example of a direct translation from in-person to online programming. For June, the Wende collaborated with ESMoA to provide instructions on how to create a board game. The activity was called PLAY X GAMES X ART and encouraged families to design a game of their own based on household objects. They also provide a template in the pdf attachment that is based on historical games. While building a board game aligns more with the mission of ESMoA, it does loosely apply to the mission of the Wende. In my opinion, it is more important that the activity is collaborative and engaging than it directly relating to the subject matter of the museum. This event is different from most of the family day activities in the fact that it does not have an obvious link to history. Despite this, I think it is a unique way to engage with “visitors.” After making the game, families can continue to play it for a long span of time. Even once they’re done with the official family day activity, the experience can last longer. This is a great example of building a community within a household and between museums. This is important to me because this was a museum I went to in pre-COVID times and it is nice to see they are still building community. -

Camdenton, Mo Protest
Following the death of George Floyd, there were protests in many major cities. There also were protests in small rural towns as well. Camdenton is a tourist town near the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. Protesters were at the main intersection in town, in front of the courthouse. Here, there was no standoff with police. During the time I was there, I only saw them drive by. Many shared stories of times they experienced racism, we also sang and chanted. I believe it is important because, in the middle of a pandemic, people risked their health to gather and protest for what they feel is right. -

Hollywood is deserted and all boarded up
We drove on Sunset Blvd in the beginning of June. This was a week or two after the protests and riots. Hollywood was deserted and boarded up, looking like a war zone or something. Desolation. -

Philadelphia Couple Gets Married During the BLM Protests
This is a wonderful story of a couple that got married during a BLM protest in Philadelphia. Due to the Coronavirus, the couple had to postpone their wedding, but they were able to make up for it for sure! The bride and groom were beautiful and very happy! I love this article because it shows the resilience of people as well as their creativity. And, it celebrates love in a turbulent time. Some things never do change no matter what is happening in the world. -

Diet culture and Fatphobia are rooted in white supremacy
It's not a topic people want to talk about, and most people do not even know the history behind diet culture and fatphobia in the United States. Food is a powerful tool that has been used to convey morality and racial supremacy to Americans for more than a century. As Americans have been in lockdown since March, terms like "quarantine-15" and "the covid-19," have become common phrases to shame weight gain due to anxiety, disrupted eating habits, and food scarcity. The current protests and push for the end of racism has many anti-diet culture dieticians and nutritionists speaking up about not only the ugly history of diet culture and fatphobia but the current situation of fat-shaming people for gaining weight during a global pandemic. This meme shared publicly through an Instagram story is one such attempt by nutrition professionals to call attention to the issue of racism, diet culture, and fatphobia. Making Us Matter Launches Official Website
Amidst school closures across the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic, University of San Francisco doctoral students, Eghosa Obaizamomwan Hamilton and Gertrude Jenkins, founded and launched Making Us Matter Virtual High School in March 2020. While educational equity issues compounded as a result of nation-wide school closures, Hamilton and Jenkins built an educational platform in which a collective of Black educators would create challenging and empowering curriculum focused on social justice and Blackness. Making Us Matter is offered, free of charge, to any student interested in curriculum focused on Black-inclusion. While educational institutions have scrambled in their attempts to serve students during the COVID-19 pandemic, Making Us Matter is a shining example of how educational leaders can disrupt education and build learning experiences that challenge the shortcomings of traditional educational models. -

Stay Home, Wash Your Hands, BLM
I posted the original of this poster a few weeks ago, and I was happy to see that it has been modified with "BLM - Spectemur agendo," the second part of which seems to be Latin meaning, "Let us be judged by our acts." -

Bay Area Protesters Giggin' to E-40 in Oakland, California
Over a week into the protests following the death of George Floyd, San Francisco Bay Area protests took on a new vibe. Protesters marching from the Piedmont Police Department to the Oakland Police Department starting playing Bay Area rap legend E-40's arguably most popular song "Tell Me When To Go." Protesters, some of which were wearing masks due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, gigged (slang for "danced") to the Bay Area legend's song during their march. The San Francisco Bay Area culture is unlike any other. It was heartwarming to see the spirit of the Bay alive and well. #HST580, #ASU, #nojusticenopeace, #sanfranciscobayarea -
