The Digital Divide Among Students During COVID-19: Who Has Access? Who Doesn't?
The article goes into detail, drawing from multiple survey sources on the internet to discuss how geographical location and economic class has affected the way that some students have been able to adapt to online instruction. Sources like the Pew Research Center show information from parents about their children's access to technology and how it has affected their capacity to complete their schoolwork, and compares that information to different school districts' capabilities to provide reliable sources of internet/other technology during school shutdowns. The article concludes by questioning how public education is a right in the US, but due to access with technology, and even basic technological issues for those who already had access to sufficient technology, has questioned how America's students are struggling to gain what they should be ensured. -

Class of 2020 Celebrated by a Rural Community
The rural community of Tuttle, Oklahoma honored their class of 2020 high graduates with a sign made out of a round bale of hay. The round bale was located just off of State Highway 37 next to the Tuttle Grain & Supply. As part of the creativity, the bale had a sign saying: "Class of 2020" with comments such as "Proud of You!" and "Congrats!" as well as "Great Job!" The sign then covered the face of the hay bale in the design of a large face mask. The community was acknowledging the circumstances that altered the 2020 senior year and graduation to be a smaller event. -

Time Alone While Fighting Together
There's a lot wrong with the world and it seems that with everyday that goes by, there is a new challenge that we are faced with. This pandemic has been quite the paradox for me. Before the pandemic, I always wished I had more time to myself to do more creative things. As an artist, i am always sketching and designing but between work and school, I have no time to to bring my sketches and designs to life. When Covid-19 became a threat and quarantine was implemented, it put everything in my life on hold. Society in general was turned upside down. From, coronavirus deaths, to George Floyd, to riots and protests, everyday presented itself unrest and sorrow. During these chaotic times, I decided to capitalize on the time I had, therefore I referred to my sketches and designs, and began creating as much as I could. No matter what i created, i found that I would be immersed in the creative process and would in fact be meditating without realizing it. When i would create, everything going on would be temporarily non-existent. The circumstances of the time I had suddenly acquired was not ideal but I was nonetheless thankful because in some ways, i learned about myself. I created many things during quarantine but due to the virus, I like many other people made masks. Masks have became a household essential seemingly overnight and the demand for them were through the roof. I never made a mask before but i decided try. It took a while to get the exact look and aesthetic i wanted to incorporate in the design but i found way through looking at numerous YouTube videos. I got to work and before i knew it, i created 20+ masks and began to sell them. From friends to strangers, people wanted a mask from me and i was more than happy to make them because i knew i was making something that not only looks good but also will protect people and last a long time. -

How to Get to Heaven Faster
This is a cartoon by The Onion, a news outlet that satires our society. It is showing that people who go to bars, sporting events, and parties get to heaven on the fast track. in other words, they are the ones who die or will die from COVID-19. Those "lucky" souls get into the VIP line, while the old folks who pass away from natural causes have to wait and show "two forms of ID." Those revelers sure look happy though, don't they? Was all the partying worth it? -

Some inmates at California state prisons eligible for early release to stem coronavirus spread
In an effort to slow the spread of covid-19 in prisons and jails across the country some inmates are being released early. The public has had mixed reactions to this plan. Some support the measure because they don't want inmates sentences to turn into a death sentence from the virus and others are concerned the inmates released early are potentially harmful to public safety. California has already released inmates early and plans to release more on July 1st. This article goes over some of the details. -

The Coronavirus Pandemic
This letter talks about the coronavirus pandemic and what we had to do during it. It states many things such as online learning, that we had to complete for most of a term instead of face to face learning. The pandemic changed many things in our day to day lives, and we had to cope with all of the changes and keep everyone safe and healthy. -

Excited About Braces!
My niece was on the path to braces right before California's shelter-in-place orders were issued mid-March. This is her first time in braces, she is one of the first in her grade to get braces, and a handful of her older cousins have braces. The excitement and anticipation were at an all time high for her. And then she had to wait, and wait, and wait. Her orthodontist recently reopened and she was one of the first patients seen. My niece was thrilled to finally get her braces! I am impressed by the dental practice's adaptability and ability to make sure their young patients feel at ease even given the newness of the COVID-19 world. The first photo in this series shows my niece waiting outside. Patients are now required to wait in/by their cars and text the practice upon arrival. They are waved in when it is their turn to enter the office. The second photo shows my niece getting her braces from her orthodontist who is in full PPE. The third photo shows her with a complete set of braces and you can feel the joy radiating from her. The final photos are of her wonderful orthodontist that is taking every possible precaution to ensure that everyone is safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. -

Quarantine's Progression
This tweet encapsulates the mindsets of many people from the beginning of quarantine in March to the present day. I would describe the first stage as optimism/depression as the full reality of being stuck inside set it. Then came the phase of trying to learn productive skills or keeping busy; for many that meant taking up baking or cooking. Most recently, as restrictions have been eased people have poured into the streets to protest racial injustice. This item was added TAGS v6.1.9.1. I originally searched under the hashtag #coronavirus. Within that search, I have chosen to add the following tweet because it describes the emotional states that people have progressed through as quarantine has dragged on. -

Protests and Coronavirus
When coronavirus started, the first sacrifice that was made to prevent the spread was all large gatherings. While this has mostly been followed for the duration of quarantine across the country, there was a huge concern when protests erupted over the murder of George Floyd. After some initial trepidation, it is clear that protestors are not causing the virus to spread; instead they seem to be trying to follow all CDC guidelines as best as they can. -

Army Teleconference
With in-person meetings restricted, the US military switched to video conferences to conduct business, like this live streaming teleconference posted on the Army's Facebook page. A reflection of the Digital Age's technological acceleration, these four officers, one of whom is a major general, discuss in real time updates to the Army's Combat Fitness Test, all the while avoiding exposure to themselves or their fellow soldiers. Since the pandemic erupted upon the global landscape, video conferencing has proven to be invaluable in the struggle to continue day-to-day functions, as schools, universities, businesses, companies, and military bases all sealed their environs. -

Masks On the March
This private first class deploys the US military's newest weapon, as the Army continues to train to fight the enemies of the future while defending against an enemy it cannot see. Prior to the pandemic, mask-wearing proved exceptionally rare in the USA, but with no mitigation effort being spared in the quest to arrest COVID-19's global march, both civilians and soldiers alike rely on them to keep the contagion at bay. -

The Screaming Eagles Rendezvous with Temp Checks
This screenshot of the 101st Airborne Division's (Air Assault) Facebook page reveals some of the counter-measures the US Army is taking against COVID-19. These soldiers of the 2nd BCT (Brigade Combat Team) undergo temperature checks before a training exercise, even though some medical professionals had voiced concerns about the reliability of handheld temperature guns. Furthermore, this image also reflects how the Army is continuing to maintain their training regimen and rotation schedule in the face of the pandemic, as these soldiers prepare to embark for the JRTC at Fort Polk, Louisiana, a state that had been a COVID hot spot just weeks earlier. -

Judge rejects request to stop Tulsa Trump rally over coronavirus concerns
Reopening has proved to be a double edged sword, as the economy slowly begins to recover while infection rates seem to rise congruently. President Trump had planned a rally in Tulsa, OK that has drawn backlash because of the current racial/policing issues present in the country, in addition to the health concerns that are present with a packed arena. The tweet summarizes the Politico article, which mentions the following: injunction to stop the rally until safety guidelines are put in place, rejection of the injunction, and the reassurance that all proper safety precautions will be taken into account for the proposed rally. -

Israeli dies of COVID-19 in Peru prison where he was held for drug trafficking
This prison looks like a terrible place to serve a sentence, and even worse during a pandemic. The article discusses an Israeli inmate who died from Coronavirus while imprisoned in Lima, Peru. Sure, he was in jail for 20 years for trafficking cocaine, but it raises larger issues about the dire inequities and lack of funding present in Peruvian jails. Allegedly the woman, Hodaya Monsonego was mentally impaired, suggesting that perhaps she should have been repatriated to her family. -

How the Airbnb ban led to lower rental prices in Canada's major cities
Many of Canada's largest cities have been experiencing what have been dubbed housing crises in the past few years; rental and purchasing prices have shot through the roof while availability shrinks, pushing out many poor or even middle class residents. This article explores how the drop in demand and government restrictions for AirBnBs (short term online rentals), as a result of the pandemic has impacted the market. To ensure they are still receiving income from their properties many who were renting their units for short term stays are instead turning to leasing them out traditionally, causing an influx in housing availability and driving the prices down with the increased supply. While this is not the best for those looking to turn a profit off their real estate it is an unexpected benefit of the pandemic for many average citizens. -

Situation of COVID-19 in Bhutan
This story describes Bhutan's success in controlling and preventing the disease from spreading in the communities under the dynamic leadership of His Majesty the King. His Majesty's genuine concern and care for his subjects has gained the attentions and admiration of many in and around the globe standing as epitome to the rest of the leaders. This kind of success under the noble leadership of His Majesty the King despite limited resources and capacity needs to be heard and seen by other world leaders and economically sound countries as it teaches the importance of good leadership over wealth and power. -
