Florida to California
In June 2020, I had to drive from Florida to Northern California for a new job. I didn't fly for fear of Covid and I had a car to move. The journey took me 5 days. The first day was from Tampa Florida to Mobile Alabama, the second day was from Mobile Alabama to Dallas Texas. The third day was from Dallas Texas to Albuquerque New Mexico. The forth day from Albuquerque to Cedar City Utah where my sister lives. Finally from Cedar City Utah to Truckee California. Before the trip I had isolated myself for fear of getting sick while travelling which I feared greatly. My general approach was to eat breakfast at the hotel, get lunch in a drive through, and have uber eats deliver food to my hotel for dinner. Along the journey it was interesting to see how strict the rules were depended greatly on where you were. In Texas I stopped at a donut shop for coffee and found a large group of elderly men sitting around drinking coffee and eating donuts without a single mask to be found. This group was clearly not concerned about Covid. However, when i drove through Navajo country in Arizona, the rules were very strict and only drive through food options was available and I had difficulty finding an open bathroom in the entire area as no gas station or restaurant was allowing people inside. I also remember listening to E Street Radio on satellite radio and Bruce Springsteen was reading the obituaries of people who had died. I remember that being a striking moment throughout all of this. -

Hearing Floyd Breathlessly Call for his "Mama"
“Even as an adult, I’m 31, when I feel depleted or I have nothing left, even as a mother, I call on my mom,” said Nikkia Hines, of St. Louis Park. Hearing Floyd breathlessly call for his “mama” in the video that has now been seen around the world is what called mothers everywhere to action. “His mother had already passed and that was his last straw,” said Hines. “That part. I can’t…I can’t verbalize how I feel.” - reporting by Courtney Godfrey -

St. Mary's Response to Racial Injustice: Email from President Thomas Mengler
The object is an email from St. Mary's University President Thomas Mengler recognized Juneteenth stating that campus will be closed that Friday, June 19th, 2020, for prayer and reflection on racial justice and racism in the U.S. In the email, President Mengler acknowledges the murder of George Floyd to reflect on during the summer of mass protests and the Black Lives Matter movement. The campus community is also called to action with upcoming initiatives to create an "anti-racist" university. Dialogue and action are said to occur and relate to the Mariniast belief and tradition to act for the common good. The email represents a significant time within our pandemic year, which was the death of George Floyd that influenced mass protests and greater momentum for the existing Black Lives Matter, demanding the police be defunded. The email portrays how St.Mary's as an institution has reflected on the national issue and its influence on Marianist culture and call to action. -

Calls for Early Release in Florida Jails as COVID-19 Cases Grow
Activists and prison reformers have been calling for inmates that do not pose a public safety risk and have either served most of their sentence, are elderly, or who are at high risk for covid complications due to pre-existing conditions to be released early. Advocates believe this not only helps the prisoners from contracting or even dying from covid but it also protects the larger community. While many jurisdictions/states have released inmates early Florida's governor has thus far refused. -

Californians must wear face masks in public under coronavirus order issued by Newsom
It is now required to wear masks in California. I finally broke down and bought a sewing machine to make masks for my family. Most masks are fairly cheap right now. Going for about $5-$10 each for a homemade one and about $20 for nicer manufactured ones. I was able to buy enough supplies to make masks for everyone I know for the price I would have spend to purchase me and my family enough to wear and wash for the week. I watched a tutorial on how to make the masks and by last night I am now able to bake a mask in under ten minutes. I am bummed about the mask mandate but it does not affect me much as I was already wearing them. Masks are making life difficult for people like me who are Hard of Hearing. I worry what next year will look like when the schools open and I go back to teaching. -

States Quietly Criminalizing Oil Protests During Covid
It is infuriating to see so many instances of government taking advantage of Covid-19 in order to enact laws that will backtrack any progress made against fossil fuel industry. But honestly, they have done this before and it wont be the last time. -

100 Days of Coronavirus in the Bay Area
Today I discovered the beautiful visual essay produced by the San Francisco Chronicle. The visual essay, entitled 100 Days of Coronavirus in the Bay Area, includes moments from the earliest days of the pandemic in the region. The visual essay is a collection of photographs and short videos, punctuated with small explanatory paragraphs, that beautifully captures the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic in the San Francisco Bay Area. While there are a number of notable moments included, the image of the original cruise ship carrying suspected COVID-19 patients entering the Bay and the shot of an almost entirely empty Bay Bridge are striking. I remember the day the cruise ship docked in Oakland. It felt like I was the only one I knew registering the gravity of impending pandemic. Submitted for the #sanfranciscobayarea collection. Contributed by Shanna Gagnon, curatorial intern for Arizona State University, HST 580. -

Arizona's Troubles
Arizona was one of the earlier states that attempted to open from its lockdown, and had initially received mixed feedback on how things were going. As the reopenings have progressed through June, it is clear that Arizona is headed for trouble. The question seems to be just how much coronavirus can actually fit in the state. -

Mask On or Mask Off?
This tweet from the Omaha World Herald highlights a very real concern that is on everyone's mind in the middle of the pandemic: the economy. In Nebraska, there appears to be a fear that if mask mandates are made a state order, the stimulus money for coronavirus relief could be withheld. It is a part of the larger struggle between state leaders and the federal government over health and safety guidelines. This item was added usingTAGS v6.9.1, searching under keyword #Nebraska. Within that search I have chosen to add this item because it speaks on the ongoing debate over the safety and necessity of masks. -

NYC Nursing Home Guidelines for Covid-19
In this tweet, Governor Cuomo is called out on his claim that much of the death and misery in the New York nursing home community was caused because the state tried to follow the CDC guidelines. This was proved to be false, and contradicted a past announcement by the State of New York that nursing homes needed to admit patients only if they were able to care for them. With the scale to which the health system in New York was stretched, many nursing homes felt that they had no choice but to accept patients. This item was added with TAGS v6.9.1, searching under keyword #NewYork. Within that search I have chosen to add this item because it speaks on the ongoing debate between state and Federal guidelines over the health of various groups within society. -

Texas students will return to school campuses this fall, Gov. Greg Abbott tells lawmakers
Texas, as a state, has had some of the largest one day new covid case counts over the past week. While some are calling this the "second wave" of covid cases the truth is it is still the first. While Texas was not hard hit in the beginning of the pandemic, in March, April, and May, it is clear that the governor, Greg Abbott's, decision to begin re-opening the state on May 1st has resulted in our rising case count now. To add insult to injury the governor announced today that all public schools will hold in person classes beginning this fall and mask wearing will not be required. I am lucky that I homeschool my high school age son already. I can't imagine the struggle parents will be facing this fall. I know many will wish they had the option not to send their children back to school because they fear their child getting the virus, but not everyone has the opportunity to homeschool. -
