Outside on the streets of Staten Island and Brooklyn
These photos depict some of the events and activities I was part of during the summer of 2020. I marched to protest the killings of innocent black men by police, I attended a street festival held in honor of Eric Garner (on the anniversary of his death), I worked at a Brooklyn Greenmarket doing "covid support" (a very stressful job), and I visited the peaceful grounds of Snug Harbor, wearing my favorite polka-dot mask made by a friend. -

Milestone Year
To get to this story, I have to go back a few years first. I'm an immigrant from El Salvador. I came to the U.S. as a teenager in 1994, and never went back. I was in my 30s when I decided it was finally time to visit the grandmother I'd been missing for so long. I started to save and plan. Then she died. It took several years before I finally took my first trip back in November of 2019. I spent the time vacationing on the coast. I avoided my grandmother's house, my friends, and my family. I wasn't ready. But I decided that for my 40th birthday, in 2020, I'd return for a longer stay and visit my childhood home and all the friends and family left behind. Then there was a pandemic. The trip was cancelled, but it was the least of that year's problems. I lost my job and went back to school to start a new career. Our dog got cancer and died. My partner had a friend in El Salvador who died of COVID. I can never reschedule that same trip. Too much has changed. I'm planning to return this summer. This time with a firmer grasp on life's impermanence. I want to visit the white sand beaches at Playa Mango before it gets turned into a "surf city" tourist trap. I want to visit all the important cultural landmarks, especially those from which I can learn about my ancestors. More importantly, I will not avoid friends and family. On the contrary, I want to cherish the time I will have with them as if the next day isn't guaranteed. I plan to take dozens of photographs, portraits of everyone I see, I want to write down their stories in my journal, I want to record every visit, every meal, every experience possible in my journal. I plan to say "see you later," but not leave anything unsaid. Just in case. -

Covid Class of 2020: Campus Philly's Virtual Yearbook for College Grads
The Class of 2020 didn't get the pomp and circumstance they deserve, but that didn't stop them from celebrating. Campus Philly wanted to take that celebration one step further by recognizing graduates from colleges and universities in the Philadelphia region with a Class of 2020 prize pack. We asked students to submit an anecdote about what they are most proud of following their undergraduate career, along with their graduation photos. We heard from 83 students, and created Philly’s first ever virtual yearbook to recognize the hard work they put in over the last four years. We sent students a variety of prizes, including gift cards, laundry bags, Red Bulls, and gift certificates for a celebratory dinner. One lucky winner even got a shout out from Philadelphia Eagles player Boston Scott! Campus Philly is so glad to have played a small role in making the Class of 2020's graduation a memorable experience. -

The Waves of Change
On March 17,2020, Enhanced Community Quarantined was declared in Luzon amidst the Covid-19 Pandemic. Since then, the AFI deployed Emirate security personnel assigned at the Ayala Museum have been required to stay-in as part of the safety protocols for construction site as the museum is undergoing renovation. The emotional and mental challenge for being separated from their families and being confined in a construction environment for several months did not discourage anyone from continuously being vigilant and carry on their duty with vigor. These guards demonstrate their resiliency by adapting to life changing situations, and emerging even stronger than before. Amidst this pandemic, these resilient AFI deployed guards ensure the continuous protection of the Ayala Museum. -

M&M Taste Test!!!
As a parent of young kids I find myself feeling very guilty that my kids are missing their friends and all the activities they were supposed to be doing. We seem to be compensating a bit with extra desserts! However we try to make more of a fun game of it and enjoy the time together as a family. We bought 5 different types of m&m’s for Father’s Day and we did a fun taste test to see what we liked best and worst. The kids enjoyed it and it will remind me of the creative sugar fun we had while we spend so much time at home!! -

Six in 10 Chinese Canadians say they have adjusted routines to avoid racist run-ins during COVID-19
Article discussing the statistics of racism and fear thereof towards people of Chinese descent in Canada during the pandemic. "Community groups, individuals and some police departments have raised the alarm about harassment linked to the pandemic, but the executive director of the Angus Reid Institute, Shachi Kurl, says the goal of the survey was to try and generate some empirical data on the issue. 'What we hear from Canadians of Chinese descent and Chinese ethnicity is, this is a real lived experience for significant numbers of them,' Ms. Kurl said in an interview. '[The survey] really speaks to the depth and breadth and scope and true saturation of this experience.' -
