Rediscovering a Family Passion
In the pandemic, Kimry reached back to her roots and decided to create a garden. When asked by friends on Facebook what did she put into the ground to make it so fertile? She replied "I put love into my ground, I put hope into my ground, I put patience into my ground and I put heart and soul into my ground. In life you can try and put this into people and yield no love back, no real friendship, and no real kindness. But, I tell you, Mother Earth will show you, that you deserve all that you put into her and more. God's time can be so quiet, calming, and so peaceful." -

2020 Virtual Pride Event
The Pride events that normally are live and in-person are now going to be going virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though, this may be seen as a bad thing it is to keep all participants safe as the pandemic has been raging and the goal is to still celebrate Pride and also keep everyone safe. There is one positive that comes out of this online pride this year which is that allows people who may normally not participate in other parts of the world who could not travel to New York City or their area or country outlaws LGBTQ things can simply just have internet and log on and participate and celebrate pride. This being online may impact others in a positive manner by allowing these new people to have the courage to be advocates for LGBTQ people. -

The New Reality of California's Preschools
"Gone are family-style meals and snacks where children serve themselves. And no more sharing toys." If it sounds grim to you, it sort of is. Children are having to stay six feet away from one another just like any other person. The difference is that a lot of these children are still far too young to understand why. Safety guidelines have been provided from the California Department of Public Health, county departments of public health, and the California Department of Social Services. This is in a notable and admirable attempt to grab some semblance of normalcy back while remaining cautious. Some other changes include, but are not limited to, having toys be sanitized after use, physical touch (i.e. hugging) are kept to a minimum, and children cannot play outside (such as the playground structures). A big problem seems to be with the touch, though. A lot of these children, as young as 2 years old, start crying and need some physical comfort. Although some of these new guidelines are straightforward and simple, they're not easily implemented as it can easily hinder a child's development and understanding of the world. -

Imagine being this fearful and demeaning to the community you're sworn to protect
"At the end of the day, if we live in the city, that means we have to shop where criminals that we arrest also shop,"MPD Police Union Director Sgt. Anna Hedberg responded in an interview with WCCO when asked if officers should live in the neighborhood they police. "And I don't know about you, but I don't want to go to Cub Foods with my two beautiful little girls and run into somebody that I've arrested for sex assault, shooting somebody, using heroin." Imagine being this fearful and demeaning to the community you're sworn to protect. -

Black Lives Matter Protests and COVID-19 Spikes.
I found this news article in June. I was scrolling through a variety of news articles on my phone when I happened across this one discussing if there was a link between Black Lives Matter protests and Coronavirus spikes. I remember being intrigued by this article because I saw online arguments from anti-BLM individuals stating that now is not the time to protest and protestors are spreading the virus faster. I found this news article insightful and important because Black Lives Matter gained momentum three months into the United States shutdown. Since the two events happened around the same time and there appeared to be misinformation spread by individuals, I found it helpful to stick to news outlets. -

Restore Pandemic Pay // Make it Permanant Poster
A poster shared on social media in support of advocacy work being done by a friend of the artist. At the beginning of the pandemic, workers in Canada's major grocery stores were given pay increases across the board by their individual employers, as compensation for the additional work and precautions they had to undertake and the hazards they would face having to interact with many different people during the near complete shut down. As time has gone on and other business sectors have begun to open up, the grocery chains have repealed this pay increase, a move which many workers and supporters consider unfair given they are still facing the same risks they have been since the beginning of the pandemic in Canada. -

"How Lesbian Bars Are Surviving a Pandemic"
From the article: "As the pandemic stretches onward, America’s few remaining lesbian bars are hanging on for dear life, and waiting for their moment. While there is no official Queer Bar Registry, current estimates put the number of lesbian bars in the United States at a vanishingly small 16. In the 1980s, there were hundreds, according to a study which has confirmed the gut feeling in queer America that the gay bar is in decline, and lesbian bars are the most endangered. Without major community and even government support, COVID-19 could reduce those numbers further — or cause a full-on extinction. Many of the bar owners I spoke to are getting by trading off bills, hoping for landlord understanding, and maxing out their credit cards; some aren’t sure if they can last past June or July if they remain closed. But still, they are holding out hope." -

New York imposes travel restrictions on visitors from Texas, the latest coronavirus hot spot
Early in the pandemic states like Florida wanted to force people from New York to quarantine upon arriving in the state. Now New York state New Jersey, and Connecticut want people from the states with large outbreaks now to self quarantine. These states include Texas, Florida, and California. Both Texas and Florida were two of the earliest states to reopen after almost the entire country found themselves under some variation of stay at home order in March and April. -

COVID-19 Outbreak Among College Students After a Spring Break Trip to Mexico
While the coronavirus was likely in the US in late 2019 or very early 2020 the pandemic was declared for a few months and the public didn't begin reacting until March. In March a large group of University of Texas (Austin) students traveled together over spring break to Mexico. Upon returning a large number of them came up positive for the virus though many were asymptomatic. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has published this document, a morbidity and mortality report, on the group. -

North Texas family shaken after 18 relatives test positive for COVID-19 following family gathering
At about five months into the pandemic in the U.S. almost all states have lifted their stay at home order and many people are going back to business as usual. One north Texas family held a surprise 30th birthday party. The host, who thought his cough was due to working construction, unknowingly infected 7 people at the party of 25 attendees. Those seven people went on to infect others in the family and now 18 within the family are positive for covid. Within the family are also a couple, one an EMT and the other a doctor, who both refused to go to the party. -

"Well, Atlantic Canada is now bubbled up!" text
A text sent to a group chat of graduate students now dispersed across the county. The writer is from, and is currently living in, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. He is sardonically expressing frustration at the absurdity of a state of affairs where the province cannot provide some basics, but can make interprovincial deals to allow people to travel and associate with others in the Maritimes. -

No known COVID-19 cases linked to anti-racism march in early June
An article discussing a statement by Ottawa's Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Vera Etches, stating that there have been no confirmed cases of covid-19 associated with anti-racism protests early in June. The fear was that the large congregation of people, some of whom not practicing physical distancing, would spread the virus, but it appears sufficient precautions were taken by protesters. "Ottawa's medical officer of health, Dr. Vera Etches, says she is not aware of any known COVID-19 cases that have been linked to a Black Lives Matter demonstration in early June. "'I'm not aware of any cases that have been determined to have occurred because of the event,' Dr. Etches told reporters Wednesday following City Council." -

Congresswoman DeGette Press Release, Funding for Covid research, bipartisan
Excerpt from press release: WASHINGTON, D.C. – While coronavirus-related research is now in overdrive, most other research has been slowed down or stopped altogether due to pandemic-induced closures of campuses and laboratories. Now, tens of thousands of graduate students, postdocs, principal investigators and other technical support staff are at risk of losing their employment and their work without federal relief. Additionally, with this research stopped, America may lose the benefits that come with new technologies and scientific insights. -

Deaf man makes masks for Deaf and HoH
The deaf, Deaf, HoH community are scrambling to get ahold of these masks with clear windows. It really only helps if everyone were to wear them, or at least family members and people who deal with the public. Also, side note: hearing-impaired is not PC! We prefer to be called HoH. I wish the reporter had done some research. -

The best and worst of Coronavirus (Peru)
I really love reading Somos, and I love this short historias piece reflecting on the best and worst of coronavirus from 100 Peruvians. It's reassuring to read what is helping people stay positive, and at the same time recognize that we're all struggling with a really difficult moment. There's a parent who laments she can't visit her daughter when she got into Stanford, another parent willing to watch the Wizard of Oz as many times as his daughter asks, and others who took the extra time at home to learn new skills like baking a carrot cake or reflecting on their lives and relationships. -

US AID sends ventilators to Peru
I didn't realize there were organizations coordinating the production and distribution of medical supplies to send abroad, it seemed like just a few months ago we couldn't even get states to agree to share supplies. I'm wondering where these ventilators will go, or if they won't even make it out of Lima. The comments and replies seemed laudatory for the president, but nothing too significant, so I didn't screenshot them. Tweet text: Today, 250 brand-new, state-of-the-art ventilators arrived safely in Peru. This @USAID donation is another example of American generosity as the United States battles COVID-19 at home and around the world. -

Its Our Story Facing Covid 19 Pandemic
The Coronavirus outbreak confirmed as pendemic or a disease that is spreading in multiple countries around the world at the same time. Including in Indonesia. President Joko Widodo annouces two positive Indonesian citizens on Monday [March 2,2020]. Then President Joko Widodo on Sunday [March 15, 2020] urged to all Indonesian to just stay at home also practicing what is called “Social Distancing” to stop the spread of the coronavirus. The situation has prompted a new outbreak in our community, likes anti-china ; hoaxes about Covid 19 ; Stigma & Discrimination and many more. Social media is more scarry than Covid 19. Another problem is our community have limited knowledge about the virus. They have learned from media or social media. So why many people are still going out and congregating in groups despite coronavirus pandemic. Based on this, me and my team “CCFrontier” take the initiative to fight against corona. -
