Distant Friendship
Through the start of the pandemic, in America, my state shut down by late March. I was fortunate enough to have been able to quarantine with my parents, after a fall my grandma joined us as well. The hard part was though to be totally honest not seeing my friend. My two best friends and I are super close and that period between March through June was the longest time since we became friends ten plus years ago, that we were apart. My birthday was during that time, which again was weird and sad not to have them as part of my actual day. I think sound was a sensory that I missed during the pandemic. Hearing my friends in person, was completely different than hearing them over Facetime, or Zoom. The laughter that normally flows, online was broken up by bad connections. -

Pregnant in a Pandemic
This blog says a lot about the pandemic and how it affects parents to be. It highlights the feelings that would run through the mind of any mom getting pregnant in the current state of the world, and the difficulties with it. It is important that historians can look back and understand the feelings that are going through our mind and how we chose to voice those through writing. A quote that resonated with me in this blog was; “It’s hard not having my husband by my side as I watch our precious miracle wiggle and kick on the ultrasound monitor. To feel robbed of the magical experience we had with our first two. They allowed me to FaceTime him after the exam so that he too could see our healthy baby boy, but it simply didn’t make up for the empty space beside me where he rightfully should have been.” -

Camping During a Pandemic
Before COVID-19 had hit the US as hard it did, a couple of friends and I had talked about going camping in Saco River once the semester was over. However, once we all went into quarantine this plan felt far from reality and we all forgot about it. It was the beginning of July and things had calmed down a little bit. I remember being out of quarantine and businesses had started to open up. The topic of camping came up again when we were thinking of ways to see each other in an open land where we can have a good time considering social distancing. Once we thought through the logistics, a couple of friends and I decided to hit the road and drive up to Saco, Maine, and spend two nights by the river in our tent. This ended up being the experience of a lifetime and just what we needed to get away from the pandemic for just a little while. We were restricted from using our phones and all sorts of social media because there was no service. We cooked, swam, played games, and tanned by the water with no worries of what was to come. We also went tubing down the river one of those days and breathed in the fresh air. We truly lived in moment and cherished the beauty of nature which allowed us to escape the reality of the world and take some time to clear our minds. -

A Summer of Pathogens and Dust: Saharan Dust Sweeps Through Kansas
Amidst COVID-19's rising case numbers throughout the state, a massive plume of dust from the Sahara Desert swept across the Atlantic, the American South, and into the Great Plains, as seen in the gray-brownish haze in these photographs. The dust plume's arrival, while not an uncommon meteorological event, nevertheless prompted the Kansas Department of Health and the Environment to issue an air quality warning for vulnerable people, as it struggled to grapple with Kansas's growing COVID case load. -

Distansya [Distance]
Namatay yung tito ko during the pandemic. -

Kitchen Table Mural
Trying to keep the family busy and happy during the shelter-in-place is a challenge. I unrolled a sheet of butcher paper on the kitchen table to occupy the kids one morning, and over the next few weeks, a mural emerged. All members of our family could be found sketching, painting, and coloring on the mural at random times until this beautiful mural was created. -
