Bad science, bad business practices
The attached article is about a plant nursery in Snohomish, Washington that banned its employees from wearing face masks on June 3, 2020. This business did not take safety precautions for its employees seriously, and actively encouraged and promoted unsafe practices. This is something that is worth being documented in the JOPTY due to the fact that the stereotype of Western Washington state is that it is very liberal, very progressive. But there are still many pockets of areas that still are not. It’s important to remember that this stereotype isn’t true. I think this is also something that is another example of the general public not taking the lives and significance that service industry/customer service workers seriously. -

Tweet from Amy Morrin Bello - State Representative in the 28th District.
This tweet is referring to an incident that occurred when the Wethersfield Historical Society put out a Facebook message about how a Black Lives Matter poster was taken down from their building by a town employee, and how they are an apolitical institution. They mentioned they kept the poster for their own archives, however the backlash came at their wording about being ‘political’ and how Black Lives Matter isn’t a political movement, it is a human rights issue. This item is really interesting, as the historical society is preserving the poster to fill archival silences, and keep a record of current events, however, they are faced with backlash from people who believe that they are not being ethical due to them trying to hide the exposing of human rights violations, which is one of the roles in being an ethical archivist. -

Filling the time whilst working in fast food
HIST30060 During this year, I was luck enough to still be able to work in my fast food job due to the JobKeeper program, which saw the government paying the wages of part time and full time staff, as well as certain casuals. I would work 2 to 3 shifts a week in the city, which allowed me time to get out of the house and socialise with my coworkers. Restrictions meant we did not receive many customers, with our main source of income coming from the delivery platforms my boss installed. Despite this work, it did not mean I was able to escape the boredom most faced during the prolonged periods of restrictions, as there is only so much cleaning you can do in the periods where we had no customers. To fill the time, I began recreating famous paintings I could find online in miniature form, using the materials I could find in store, such as white board markers and receipt paper. Pictured here is my attempt at recreating Vincent Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ (bottom left), the ‘Great Wave off Kanagawa’ by Hokusai (right), and Edvard Munch’s ‘The Scream’ (top left). -

Phillies place four players on the COVID-19 injured list
This is an article that I wrote on July 3rd, detailing how the Philadelphia Phillies placed for players on the injury list because of exposure to COVID-19. This is an important piece to me because it is one of my first forays into sports journalism, and it also shows how the pandemic affected my favorite sport. -

Kid's Masks
In the case that schools return in person this fall, I decided to stock up on face masks for the kids. I realized that we'd likely need as many face masks as the kids have socks or underwear and worried that kid's masks would sell out as the school year neared. I found these super cute animal masks for the kids and they love them. I was really worried that my kids have trouble wearing masks. To my surprise, they have yet to complain about them. Although they are young, their ability to grasp the seriousness of this pandemic is truly amazing. -

Another Day, Another Puzzle - Day 112
With calendars cleared as a result of shelter-in-place orders we have had more time to enjoy some of our family's favorite past-times. Cards and board games that were collecting dust have made their way out of cabinets. But what we've spent more time on than anything is puzzling. While each member of our family will puzzle here and there, our 5 year old son is a constant at the puzzle board. His attention and focus to puzzling is way beyond his years. Puzzling has given us the gifts of togetherness, joy, and consistency during these uncertain times. Another puzzle complete on Day 2 of our get away. A puzzle to match his shirt! -

Tipsy Tales
We spent 2 and a half years building the [Philippines'] first immersive theater on Filipino Folklore. We ran for an amazing six months serving thousands of locals and tourists alike. We had a lot of dreams for the company. We wanted to export multi-sensory interactive theatrical experiences on Filipino culture to the world. We wanted to make people happy. The pandemic had shut down both live entertainment and the tourism industry. We could no longer afford to keep it running in the new normal. When we had to close our production, it was heart breaking. Everyone knows how hard it is [to] open a business, but few people talk about he kind of grief that comes with closing one. For a while, it felt like I had a lost a child. So young and full of potential that died before it's time. There was a pain to losing something you've worked so hard to grow from the ground up. But at the end of the day, we are grateful for the chance to have brought a dream to life, even just for a short while. Dreams are our greatest rebellion against these uncertain times. My greatest hope is that we never forget that in the darkness, we can be our own light. -

NO FAIR
I might not get to attend school next term, and it's only a little bit my fault. It would be easier for me to accept that I might not get to go to school next term if it was, actually, my fault. But in order to explain exactly why this is happening to me, specifically, I have to go back to a single moment in 2018. I took a break from school for 3 terms-- or, one and a half years. I took classes here and there at the University of Maine to earn some basic credits. When I initially filed my tax return, I owed about $60. Immediately after filing my tax return, I went back and realised that I needed to fill out the 1098-T. Suddenly, the US government owed me about $900. I probably would have remembered if I was paying for my tuition myself. Technically the funds are in my name, but my dad's the one who does all the re-arranging and finagling when we pay my tuition. During that time off I paid my student loans by myself just fine, but he does some jiggery pokery with investment accounts I can't understand. I remember getting a bunch of warnings. ARE YOU SURE YOU'RE NOT COMMITTING FRAUD, ARE YOU SURE YOU'RE NOT LYING, ARE YOU SURE YOU'RE NOT A THIEF, etc etc., when I filed for an amendment. It took the government months and months to process the amendment, and begrudgingly admit that they owed me money. When I finally did get a check sometime in August, I laughed about it and put it in my (very healthy) savings account. This year, I was late to the game. I believe I completed the FAFSA on time, though I'm not sure. I'm not even sure it would have made a difference. I kept getting notifications that I hadn't completed my forms. I looked online and the FAFSA seemed OK. Things came to a head one afternoon in mid-May. We received a bill where I had no financial aid, at all. I called my advisor, freaking out and crying in these huge, gross sobs, because nothing upsets me like money. She reassured me we would figure it out. What I did figure out is that because I filed an amended tax return, I had to get a tax transcript. Before I could get a tax transcript, I had to get my student loan number, because I didn't have any of the other things that they asked for-- no auto loan, no credit card. I'm still not entirely sure what my student loan number is. I have 3 different numbers that I rotate on the IRS site when I'm absent-mindedly trying to get my transcript, again. None of the numbers that I cried over finding work. I always get an error message. I don't think there's any student loan number associated with my account, even though I've paid student loans before. I've tried so many times that if I was doing something wrong, I probably would have done something right by now. You can try 3 times every 24 hours before they lock you out for 'fraud prevention' or something. The financial aid office at my school told me I have to wait until an IRS office opens. My local office is located in a strip mall. It has a 1.8 star rating on Google. There is no indication whether they've re-opened or not. In the meantime, I don't know what to do. I feel lost, and physically sick to my stomach. I'm not unfamiliar with being forced to take a break from school. I'm unfamiliar with having so much I desperately want to do next term, but with the looming threat of that being taken away. I feel helpless. I try to act like nothing's up, but talking about the situation is a fast way to reduce me to tears. I keep wanting to yell NO FAIR, even though other people are in a worse situation. The people I've talked to at school have reassured me that they'll find a way. It's really hard to believe them. I just want the IRS to open back up, and to get my damn transcript. Then everything will be OK. -

4th of July Essentials
As the 4th of July is only one day away, many people are preparing to celebrate. As Doctor Del Rio highlights in his tweet, it is imperative to practice safety guidelines this holiday season. As case numbers get even worse, hospitals are getting overstretched and there may not be enough medical care for everyone that needs it. This item was added TAGS v6.1.9.1. I originally searched under the hashtag #wearadamnmask. Within that search, I have chosen to add the following tweet because it highlights the importance of wearing any type of face covering. It also has multiple medical professionals present stating the same thing . -

Death Likes to Roll the Dice
Wearing a mask has become a political issue more so than a health issue. As someone who has existing health conditions, wearing a mask always seemed to be a matter of social responsibility. It has been interesting, and at times confusing, to see all of the arguments used to try and discourage mask wearing. This item was added TAGS v6.1.9.1. I originally searched under the hashtag #wearadamnmask. Within that search, I have chosen to add the following tweet because it describes the arguements that many people make for not having to wear a mask. -
