Summer Taylor was 24 years old and lived in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle. They died in the early hours of July 4th after marching and dancing with the nightly Black Femme March for Black Lives Matter. As it had for weeks, the protest entered the freeway and brought traffic to a stop. A driver in a white car sped toward the crowd, running into Summer and another activist, Diaz Love. Summer should be remembered as a hero who put their life on the line to make a difference, to stand with BLM, show solidarity with their community, and to disrupt an unjust system. When Summer's mother, Dalia, was asked about being concerned about children's safety attending protests, she responded, "I knew no matter how much I might want to ask them to stay safe during protests they would just say mom, if you are Black in this country it isn't even safe to be alive, and they were right." 2020-07-23COVID-19 Contact Tracing Notice - Healthcare Worker
This was an email sent to my brother, who is a third year Doctor of Optometry student at the University of Melbourne. One of his classmates had tested positive for Covid-19, and he had been in the same lab room doing practicals together during this time. His whole class was asked to self-isolate for a two-week period, and his exams for the semester were pushed back as well. Although he does no directly deal with Covid-19 related patients, as a healthcare worker, he must come in close contact with people on a greater basis than almost any other profession. He isolated for the required period and was tested twice, thankfully with a negative result both times. Each test required 1-2 days turnaround. This object shows the steps organisations are taking to ensure proper contact tracing and in taking care both their patients and students. It also shows how healthcare workers, who come in close physical contact with others, are inherently at high risk and need to be extra careful not to catch or spread diseases. HIST30060. -

HIST30060: This photo is remarkable because of the tranquility it boasts, in contrast to the usual palooza of tourist buses and clicking cameras. Taken a few days before the second hard lockdown in Victoria, this photo is a tribute to how different this year really was. As my friend and are marveled at the rock formations for 30 minutes, we did not see a single other person. The car park built for hundreds was empty, visitors center closed indefinitely and the sound of our footsteps echoing as we passed under the multi-million dollar underground walkway. This year has been a major challenge for everyone, however has granted (or forced) a new perspective on life which perhaps makes every experience more impressive. -
2020-07-23Corona vs. College
I related to this meme because after getting laid off from my job, and moving back home to California, I had to make ends meet. I got another job and started a new life not expecting to go back to UNLV for a while just for an email to go out saying they were allowing students to come back on campus. My friends who are currently on campus aren’t getting anything close to their normal experience (I’m a dance major) and I’m learning remotely yet still paying a full tuition? In addition, I was reading how there were huge cuts to colleges throughout the U.S due to the virus so to me this shows the governments disconnect with higher education. Allowing the facilities to reopen as they wish but taking their funds away that directly affect their student body, who are most likely struggling financially themselves is baffling to me. Had funds not been cut, I believe some colleges may have not felt the need to reopen so soon, as funding may not have been as big of a concern. Disclaimer, this is not facts just my honest opinion and experience! -

When people are granted parole they often are not released immediately and are required to complete programming or set up things outside of the facility for when they are released. It appears thousands of people incarcerated in Texas are being held in prison because transfers to other facilities where these programs take place are not happening in an effort to slow the spread of Covid. This article gives the details and the difference between what incarcerated people are saying and those in charge. -
2020-07-23Mother Lode coronavirus cases, hospitalizations continue to increase
This article reports on increasing cases in the Mother Lode and a the first death from the virus in Calaveras County. There had been 104 cases in Tuolumne County at the time this article was published and cases are continuing to rise. The county is now very close to being put on California's monitoring list for areas of the state with high COVID-19 cases. Doctor's interviewed urge people to get tested to help keep other members of the community safe. -

The Big Apple is a roadside attraction along the busy Toronto-Montreal-Ottawa corridor of Highway 401 near Cobourg, Ontario. Anyone who has travelled this route within the last 20 years or more is familiar with the landmark which has, at times, been billed at the World's Largest Apple, and is attached to an apple pie bakery. The Executive Office for Immigration Review shutdown in-person hearings during the height of the pandemic. Some courts reopened for detained immigrants in the middle of the summer, but hearings in non-detained cases at courts without an announced date are postponed through, and including, August 7, 2020. ICE, however, has not stopped detaining more immigrants during the pandemic. So as numbers in detention centers grew, these new detainees couldn't challenge the courts.
