Photos from March for Elijah McClain
"I can’t breathe. I have my ID right here. My name is Elijah McClain. That’s my house. I was just going home. I’m an introvert. I’m just different. That’s all. I’m so sorry. I have no gun. I don’t do that stuff. I don’t do any fighting. Why are you attacking me? I don’t even kill flies! I don’t eat meat! But I don’t judge people, I don’t judge people who do eat meat. Forgive me. All I was trying to do was become better. I will do it. I will do anything. Sacrifice my identity, I’ll do it. You all are phenomenal. You are beautiful and I love you. Try to forgive me. I’m a mood Gemini. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. Ow, that really hurt. You are all very strong. Teamwork makes the dream work. Oh, I’m sorry I wasn’t trying to do that. I just can’t breathe correctly." These are the last words of Elijah McClain captured by a body cam of an Aurora Police officer before he died of a cardiac arrest. The police were responding to a 911 call saying he “looked sketchy” while wearing a ski mask and waving his arms. Elijah was a 23-year-old massage therapist who broke no law, didn't have a weapon, and posed no threat. While trying to handcuff him, an officer laid on top of him and put him in a carotid hold, which restricts blood to the brain to render someone unconscious. After 15 minutes medical responders arrived and paramedics injected him with ketamine, which body camera footage shows it made his body go limp. Elijah McClain should be alive today. Dogs send love
HIST30060 During COVID it was definitely a comfort for many to have their pets. Whilst the world was figuratively and literally burning down around us, the unconditional love and easy needs of caring for a dog brought a small moment of respite in the day. A dog will always enjoy a treat. It makes one think about the perspective of dogs during this time. For my dog, Goliath, he now gets to see me every single day, compared to me leaving at 7 in the morning and arriving home at 4pm (sometimes later) when I was studying on campus. And he gets more walks because leaving the house with him was some of the only times we actually got to leave the house. A dog will always enjoy a walk. Just having another creature near you who enjoys the little things and isn't weighed down by the dread and despair of the pandemic and who I get to share the company of really helps. -

A COVID Wedding
John Lokka's Wedding, July 26, 2020, at the Gettysburg Hotel, Gettysburg, PA. My wedding was the final wedding at the Gettysburg Hotel until at least mid-Summer 2021. Due to COVID and Pennsylvania's response, the wedding date moved three times. Originally for June 20, we changed the date to September 6 when the initial lockdown period exceeded expectations. About three weeks prior to July 26, the hotel coordinator called us to explain there were no more public events after August 2. Gettysburg College, owners of the hotel, needed additional dorm room space to meet COVID distancing restrictions. They were converting the hotel in additional dorms and distance learning. When we agreed to host our wedding, the coordinator offered many amenities originally beyond our means. They offered us the Grand Ball room, a converted bank. About a week before the wedding, PA's Government Wolf issued new COVID restrictions due to a general uptick in cases. He limited indoor gatherings (weddings) to 25 people including service personnel. To meet the requirements, Gettysburg Hotel eliminated one person, and we uninvited two. Thankfully, two people decided not show. It was great time. Every one who attended needed to be there. The joyous atmosphere gave all a chance to forget their own troubles for a few hours. -

New Hobbies
One I heard we were going to be stuck at home for a while I thought “This gives me the chance to do something I’ve always wanted to do.” That thing is working out. I was never one to be active before, much less working out, but I pushed myself. I looked up some good workouts and I eventually got an app that helps me out with everything. Me doing that made me sleep better and even feel better. This really gave me something to do instead of being bored all day. -

COVID-19 test
On July 22th, 2020 Dalian, China detected one comfirmed coronavirus patient who did not have travel history, he was infected from his factory which imported seafood. The next day the city started to do the free coronavirus test street by street to find out how many people were in close contact with the first patient were infected and placed them in hospital for quarantine and treatment. This was a picture taken when I was lining up for the covid-19 test. It touched me that doctors and volunteers from nationwide gathered immediately and risking their health to help and protect us. -

American Theater Workers Urgently Need Financial Help. The Government Must Step In.
"The arts in New York City is a major economic engine. According to a study commissioned last year by the Mayor’s "Office of Arts and Entertainment, theater is responsible for $1.3 billion in annual economic output, 8,409 jobs, and $513 million in salaries. The Broadway closedown, effective from March 12, has had a massive financial impact on New York, and a massive personal impact on those who work within it...When the coronavirus pandemic hit New York City, hundreds of Broadway shows closed immediately. While the Actors’ Equity Association was able to secure several weeks of pay and health insurance for Broadway and touring performers, many were left with nothing." -

Pandemic Pods? The Return of Schooling in America
This pandemic has opened the eyes of millions of Americans, including mine, when it came to questioning the necessity of a traditional schooling system. The bridge between political parties reflects various differing opinions on what parents feel the best way to re-enroll back their kids into school. The article I found interested me as it mentioned that families are looking into the idea of creating small groups with local children called “pods” which would help [pay for private tutors or teachers. However this method may require paying thousands of dollars in order to fund tutors to teach these localized groups of students. It is still unsafe in many institutions which thousands of children pass by one another on a daily basis which could lead to mass spread of the virus if even a couple of students have contracted the virus. This article reflects the outcome of an already declining school system affected with a worldwide pandemic. This article gives us a way of looking at how people are affected by and making alternatives to a failing and problematic system of education due to current health safety requirements. This post makes me question whether to innovate or destroy the system? Everything seems to be fluid and unpredictable due to the varying status of the nation day to day. Makes me question, who is responsible for the safety of students and children to be upheld? How does one monitor the level of safety and how will well being be ensured? -

Trekking to Glendale for the Splash Pad
Everything in Tempe has been closed since late March. Well, almost everything. The bars and restaurants have opened and re-closed. By contrast, playgrounds, splash pads, and pools have stayed closed. It’s been so hard not be able to take the kids somewhere to burn off energy. But, because of the inconsistency in state and municipal responses, the counties surrounding Tempe have different rules. That means we can go to a swimming pool in Chandler or a splash pad in Chandler. I realize that taking the kids anywhere in a pandemic is polemical, but they need a break from the monotony. It’s way too hot during the day (111-118 F) to just go on a bike ride or walk around the neighborhood. Therefore, we have to do something with water. We don’t go out every weekend, but we try to get out once in a while. My 6yo is struggling the most, she misses her friends, she misses school, and I feel like these outings help with morale. -

Hand sanitizer donation accepted at San Quentin never reached the inmates
These are images of a Tweet and the responses explaining how rapper, E-40, donated hand sanitizer to San Quentin for their incarcerated people and it never got to a single inmate. Many of the respondents believe the prison staff took it for their own use or to sell it.
