Water Slides in the Days of Covid
My family resided in Columbus, Georgia during the Covid-19 pandemic. In October 2020 my sister-in-law’s family came to visit us from Arizona. We decided to take our families to Great Wolf Lodge in LaGrange, Georgia, just 45 minutes from my home, for a two-day vacation. This was my first experience traveling after travel restrictions were lifted. Great Wolf Lodge houses an indoor water park, restaurants, and family entertainment attractions, as well as hotel accommodations all in one building. My family had visited before the pandemic, so we were familiar with the resort and procedures. This made changes in policies and behavior more evident than they may have been otherwise. Safety protocol set in place at Great Wolf Lodge included mandatory mask wearing in the hallways and open areas of the resort. Masks were not required in the waterpark; however, signs were posted throughout detailing mandatory social distancing protocol. Individuals were to remain at least six feet apart from each other in all areas, especially when waiting in lines. The guidelines were a nice idea, but large swarms of children eager to get onto a waterslide cared little for waiting in lines any distance apart. The adults seemed to feel the same way too. There was no personal space while waiting in lines, much less six feet social distance. In normal times, Great Wolf hosts bedtime dance parties and stories in their main lobby for the kids. Due to Covid restrictions, however, these dance parties were canceled and instead were broadcast on a set TV channel that could be viewed from guests' rooms. Our families arrived around 1:00 in the afternoon on day one. One person went in to do the checking in and then we headed to our rooms to change and head to the park. Everyone played for at least three hours. A few of the older kids tired out earlier and headed back to the rooms. The rest of us headed back to the rooms for dinner with the plan to meet up again afterward and play until the park shut down. Over the next hour, almost all of my kids started coughing. We started to wonder if they were having a reaction to the chlorine. Then the runny noses started and even the most excited kids said they were too tired to go back that night. After talking to my sister-in-law, the same thing was happening in her family. We decided to call it a night and check back in the morning. By morning, we had to call it. Even mild cold symptoms were enough in those days to get you thrown out of public places and we had to be cautious with even the smallest symptom that might indicate Covid-19. We knew the only responsible thing was to pack it up and head home. We had a great three hour vacation the day before, but the rest of it just wasn’t going to happen. It was the most expensive three hour vacation I think I’ll ever have. We felt like criminals smuggling our tightly masked children through the halls that morning and begging them to hold in their sneezes or coughs until we got outside. We were so glad we had chosen to vacation only 45 minutes from home that time. The colds passed, and eventually we returned to Great Wolf Lodge to enjoy a full vacation. We still laugh, though, about our attempt at a “normal” vacation in the midst of Covid-19. -

Who Received Pandemic Money?
This article shows how the economic bailouts of the pandemic helped large corporations much more than they helped impacted individuals. Since the beginning, we've seemingly been supporting and encouraging essential workers. The support can be identified as fraudulent because according to the Washington Post, big companies that employ essential workers didn't use their bailout funds to support their workers. Billions of dollars went out but aid is still running low where it matters the most, with hardworking citizens. -

Silver Linings
The past year was a very hectic one. Many things changed over 2020 and overall it was a whirlwind of a year. While there are many bad things to point out about it there are some silver linings too. Due to the coronavirus, we had to quarantine for a while. This forced me to spend a lot of time with my family, but I am very thankful for this now. My brothers are 4 and 1, but I am 14. This means that in 4 ½ years when I leave for college they are going to be 5 and 9, so I need to spend as much time with them as possible before I leave and start a new life away from them. 2020 showed me how important family really is and I will no longer take it for granted. Another silver lining of 2020 was learning that I have a love for baking. When quarantine started in March I would be extremely bored because I had to stay home. I was tired of staring at a screen for so long, so I knew I had to find something to do. This is how I stumbled upon baking. I made sugar cookies for my family one time and I knew I had to continue baking. I fell in love with it. Now I use it to help me calm myself. Being in control of everything I’m doing makes me feel grounded, so even when I’m stressed about something going on in my life, baking makes me feel in control so that I can handle the situation correctly. From the outside 2020 might have been bad, but if you look for the silver linings you realize it might’ve been just the year you needed. -

Record of the Day
I didn’t do very much of anything today, but I’ll give a record of it anyway because maybe it was more interesting than I thought. First things first, I woke up at 6:40 am and didn’t move out of bed until 6:50 am when my dad yelled for me to get up. Then I got ready for school, helped get my two little brothers ready for school, and drank a smoothie for breakfast. We left kind of late today, so the older of my two younger brothers was almost late for school. Then, to make sure my youngest brother was on time and so was I, my dad dropped me off at my brother's drop-off spot and I had to walk the rest of the way to school. I had advisory and the assembly first, so nothing too exciting. Next, I had science where we went over our last experiment and the homework, had a mini in-class quiz, and then we got to finish The Martian. Once science was over I had English where we just worked on our papers that are due Thursday. Thankfully, after that was lunch and recess which were a nice reprieve from schoolwork. After lunch, I had math where we learned about linear systems of inequalities. My last class of the day was PE where I am currently doing volleyball. It was pretty fun, except for my arms were sore after because the coach had us using the heavy balls to practice setting. I went home after PE, had some nut mix for a snack, and went on my phone for a while before starting my homework. I took a break from that at around 5 and went on a walk with my family before coming home and eating dinner. I finished up my homework a little after that and spent some time with my family before going to work out and shower. After I showered I went to bed, and that was my day! -

Asian American students discuss experience during COVID-19 pandemic
Long-standing stereotypes and new pandemic-related misconceptions against Asians and Asian Americans still affect their day-to-day lives. University students of East Asian descent say they’ve felt alienated and scared during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the pandemic began, hate crimes against Asians in the U.S. have increased and stricter regulations have been enforced against international students, particularly those from China. Since the spread of COVID-19 from Wuhan, China, Asians have been strongly connected to the virus in the public sphere. President Donald Trump has called COVID-19 the “Chinese Virus” and “kung flu” — associating Asians with the spread of the virus. -

Xbox Live Shenanigans
This is a trap remix of Darkthrone’s “Transilvanian Hunger” that I made on my phone in GarageBand. My friends and I usually congregate on Xbox Live every night after we get home from work for the night. With rising costs, dwindling savings, and less work available than ever before, we don’t really plan things anymore. When we do, the plans usually include cooking dirty burgers, drinking beer, and playing board games at someone’s house. That and playing Xbox together are the cheapest options for hanging out that we even have. Lately, our favorite pastime has been making beats on our iPhones in GarageBand. Someone jokingly told me that Norweigan black metal is the only un-sampleable musical genre. I set out to prove him wrong. Laughter and hilarity ensued. -

Smiles behind the masks
The photograph can be interpreted in many ways. How I interpreted it was how the COVID-19 pandemic help to reunite families who their focus on the American dream. Many families consist of 9-5 jobs, after school activities, and so forth. This leaves many children or other family member feel disconnected, but now with many places shutdown, stay at home orders, and virtual learning families how found that joy and bonding among their family. Interacting and bonding with family while living a joyful life is the true American dream not the cookie cut house with the white picket fence. -

Fear More Deadly Than The Virus
The story I chose to upload was my own short story written in the perspective of third person. I wanted to submit something that would be set apart from the other submissions. We focus so much on the pandemic and how if we don't use a mask or follow rules we could die. We have allowed fear to control our thoughts and emotions, allowing fear over facts to control our actions. I am more afraid of those acting out of fear as opposed to the virus itself. I hope the simplicity of my story brings a different perspective to the table of this topic. -

for at least the next decade it is now socially acceptable to wear a mask!
I really just came to this realization! I can now wear a mask whenever I go out for potentially the rest of my life! As an introverted person this is absolutely amazing! Seriously your telling me I can wear a mask! I can actively just not have to show my face anywhere! before in 2019 if you wore a mask to the grocery store or gas station that was a mad shady situation. Now! I can wear it! I hate COVID-19 but I'm going to enjoy this little perk forever! -

What influenced me during the pandemic
Hello everyone, my name is Eddie Wu. I was born US but raised in Taiwan, a country that is nearby China. That means we are the first few countries that is influenced by COVID-19 due to the geography distance. At that time, my family was separated, me and my siblings living at Tempe, taking classes. My parents were at Taiwan that time facing the COVID-19, my parents are asked to stay home and put on masks when they go out. Then one more month later, the first case has happened in US. First, I think I will just stay here doing normal classes and will stay normal. Then my parents suddenly asks my siblings to go back to Taiwan, because Taiwanese government have already showing their ability to control the pandemic at Taiwan. So, it suddenly changed my day that time. My siblings are back to Taiwan, and I stayed here alone. It is scary that while the first few cases are founded in US, I am the only few person who put on masks in public places. I still remember at March, when I went to one of the store to get groceries, I have my masks on and my gloves on, some other customers told her child that I am sick so I put on my masks. During the pandemic time, it does change the ways I get groceries, socializing with friends, and taking class. The pandemic have make me getting bigger amount of groceries in once. When I am trying to doing activities with friends, mostly we are doing it on voice chat apps, if we have to meet outside, I always ask them to have their mask prepared, and also I will bring hand sanitizer to clean our hands. The last the changes the most is my classes, I am an UAS student, most of my class will be really hard to teach online because we don’t actually see the items in real life if the class is online, so most of my class are really hard for me that time, because it is online, somethings aren’t clear enough and I need to spent more hours to learn it myself. These are some major things that changes in my life during pandemic. -

Joe Biden says Trump bears responsibility for Covid-19 Infection
The article talks about how during the presidential debate, how Donald Trump refused to wear a mask and not just during the debate, but other instances where he didn’t use a mask because he didn’t find it necessary. Some people believe that Trump is to blame for some of the infection of Covid-19 because of the example he set, not wearing a mask. The article is pretty neutral between both parties, but leans more to the left. The article reveals that because of President Trump not always wearing a mask, he has given people a mindset that a mask isn’t always needed, which caused controversy between the two parties. It also reveals that since Trump being diagnosed with Covid-19 as well as the First Lady, proves that a mask is beneficial for the spread of the virus. It is important because it shows both parties beliefs about wearing a mask. It was shared that President Trump only sometimes chooses to wear a mask, and Joe Biden finds it more important and beneficial to take that step. The responsibility of the media during the pandemic is to inform the people of what decisions need to be made by the government, for the benefit of the citizens. It is important for the government to be transparent and honest with the people of the United States, and they should be responsible for the communication between the Leaders and the citizens of the US. -

Covid-19 and The Media
This article serves to inform the public of President Trump’s current condition after being diagnosed with Covid-19. It talks about how the doctors taking care of Trump contradict themselves when talking about his health condition and it leaves people wondering if he is in a worse state than they are making him out to be. I chose this article because I haven’t heard anything about Trump since he was diagnosed with Covid-19 and I wanted to know the latest news on his condition. This article shows how much of an impact Covid-19 is currently having in our Country. The President getting diagnosed with a disease right before the election can obviously have massive repercussions in the political world and America as a whole. This article is important because it lets people see the current state of our President in this crucial time and see the severity of what's going on. There is no bias that I could find in this article because the headlines, wording, sources, and even the pictures all have a very neutral standpoint. The article is simply presenting the facts and evidence they gathered from various sources. The responsibility of the media during the Covid-19 pandemic is to inform people of the situation around the world and spread the importance of safety. The pandemic has obviously started a lot of conflicts that can be seen all throughout the media, but the main priority of all people should be ensuring the safety of themselves and others around them. -

Preparing for after the pandemic
When COVID shutdowns first occured, I had pretty good momentum going in all aspects of my life -- work, school, relationships, time management, and overall satisfaction that I was doing what I needed to do to succeed. The chaos associated with COVID kind of threw all of this into a storm, uncertaintly and doubt in many aspects. I assume that this was the case for many people, and we will never forget about the toilet paper shortage back in spring. However, as we have become acclimated to temporary health precautions, there are two ways that most people will transition from the virus difficulty to normalcy - farther along or further behind where they have started. Many take this time to do less engaging work, relax, and watch episodes of Netflix for hours on end. While this is perfectly acceptable, I chose to look at it as an opportunity to become a better person and hit the ground running when society is back to normal. This means sticking to a workout routine, learning how to cook among many other new skills, being more productive and working more efficiently virtually, and being a better academic. I believe that the pandemic was a great learning experience and it has taught me to deal with challenges in a way that I wouldn't have considered otherwise. -

The Weird Reality of Pro Sports during Covid-19
The main point of this article is to simply address the odd time that we are currently in. It points out things in sports that were unheard of before this 2020 season. I chose this article because first of all I love watching sports, and was excited for them to come back. But, also I think this article does a good job of pointing out the obvious things that everyone is feeling and simply addressing that these times are simply just weird. This article reveals the difference of watching sports now, during the pandemic, compared to a year ago when you could physically cheer on your teams or even just eat a hot dog at a live game. This article is important because it documents the way many people are feeling about sports in 2020. I think this is important to showcase because sports have taken so many drastic measures in order to keep going. The author of this article is definitely a sports fan, but he doesn’t seem upset at the current situation of sports. He is simply stating the differences between then and now. The media is responsible for providing accurate information about the state of the pandemic itself but also providing uplifting content that will help people who are struggling through these times or content that will bring people together and uplift the community. -

カイコ」から“純国産”抗体検査キット 予約開始(2020年10月5日) - "Domestic" antibody test kit made from "Silkworm" reservation start (October 5, 2020)
A news that Japan made a domestic antibody kit that allows tracking of antibodies of the COVID-19. The news does not say how far back it can track the antibodies, and there are news saying that the antibodies will disappear in 3 months, so I am not sure if this will be useful for people after that 3 month span. Pre-orders for an antibody test kit that allows you to check the infection history of the new Coronavirus using the protein grown in the moth larvae "silkworm" began on the 5th. The antibody test kit was developed by using silkworms of moth larvae to propagate a non-toxic protein similar to the new coronavirus. It is a domestic test kit made in Japan developed by Kyushu University venture company "KAICO" and Saitama venture company "Protex", and it can measure the amount of antibody more accurately than the conventional antibody test. Mr. Masahiro Taniguchi, KAICO Development and Sales Manager: "Currently, it is an advantage to know the infection history. (In the future), the amount of antibody will be known throughout the year." The antibody test costs about 5,000 yen each time, and reservations will be accepted online from the 5th for corporations and groups in Japan.
