Trump Rally
Yesterday, individuals opposing COVID-19 restrictions and the 2020 Presidential election results rallied for the third consecutive week. Around two hundred protestors countered the scheduled event calling out the relationship between Bikers for Trump MN and white supremacy groups attending like the Proud Boys, an all-male hate group that promotes and carries out political violence. -

Thank Goodness for Artistic Friends
When my daughter's birthday arrived this past summer, we realized any in person party was out of the question. Trying to think of what we could possibly do, we reached out to our friend, a part-time artist, and asked if she would mind hosting a virtual painting party for our daughter and three of her friends to do over Zoom. Our friend was amazing, leading the girls in painting a Captain America shield. She made my daughter's birthday quarantine memorable and fun. Three months later, and desperate for ways to make our virtual Girl Scout meetings exciting, I asked if she would consider leading our girls in earning their "Drawing" badge. Not only was she excited, she went above and beyond. Her husband, who does tech work for films (including the Mandalorian) set her up with various camera angles she could toggle back and forth through. She didn't just have the girls copy a picture, she taught them about all the different tools, how to shade, different techniques. Honestly, I learned a lot myself! Though she did this out of the kindness of her heart, I seriously think she should make a career out of this! She was amazing with the girls, they LOVED the meeting and talked about not only how much they learned, but how helpful and patient our special guest teacher was. She really should start an art for kids YouTube channel. One of the greatest things that has come out of this pandemic is the willingness of people to assist and support one another, and use their talents in ways that they may not have thought of before. -

“I Ordered Takeout and I’m Outside Now!”
One of the ways that Loretta has been able to thrive is through takeout. People will call in or place orders online, and can either come in to grab their food, or pull up at curbside pickup. Takeout has been a way that people are able to support a local business during this time, and to get out of their house in a safe way. I think that future historians will find this interesting in order to learn how restaurants used takeout as a way to stay open during the pandemic, and as a way to comfort people in the community, to let them know that we are still here. Recently, we have been offering delivery if people live close enough to the restaurant. -

Sanitize Everything
I started working at Loretta, a restaurant located in Newburyport MA, in the middle of July. One of the most important things they told me to do (besides wear a mask,) was to sanitize everything. We have to wipe down the tables, chairs, pens, drink menus, receipt books and everything else you can think of. This is important to do because while we try to limit what people touch, they still touch everything, because that is what humans do. This will be important for future historians because it will show how much work is done behind the scenes that we have to do as workers in a restaurant. It will show how much cleaning increased in the year of 2020. -

Scan Me!
Instead of using reusable menus, to limit what people are touching, Loretta created scannable and paper menus for guests to use. Guests can scan the code on the paper provided, and a link pops up to bring people to the restaurants menu. This is an important part of the pandemic, because people are encouraged not to touch everything they see, so by limiting what people are touching, Loretta has limited the spread of potential germs. When future historians look back on restaurants during the pandemic, they will see how a lot of establishments created scannable menus for their guests. Some people have a difficult time with the snanable menus, which is why the paper menu is offered. People are typically eager to learn how to use the scan menus though, sometimes out of frustration for it not working, but also because of the growing popularity of scanning items with phones. -

Indoor Dining at Loretta
This is what it looks like for indoor dining at the restaurant Loretta in Newburyport, MA. There are less tables in the dining room and they are all spaced out at least 6 feet with tablecloths on them. Indoor dining has been a controversial activity during the pandemic, with people going out but experts warning against it. Loretta has made sure to keep safe distances with the tables and guests are also required to wear facemasks if they stand up. In the future, historians can look back and see how we maintained a safe dining experience throughout this pandemic. -

The ways how Covid-19 is annoying and helping us [ANONYMOUS]
When I go to malls, I usually take buses and sky trains and I can see all the people in buses and trains are wearing their masks. Including children and seniors. When I get any malls, every single person is wearing a mask and getting social distancing. And if there are lots of people in a shop and there is a limitation of capacity of people, and the shop is full, then others who want to go in have to wait for it until the people in the store get out. This thing is one of stressful things for everybody. And when I go to the school, we only take 1 to 2 blocks for a day, and we have to clean our desks and chairs before the classes begin, or after the classes end. This one is really inconvenient. Of course all the students wear their masks for the whole time in the school. We have our cohort zone which makes me and my friends separate. And everyone cannot expect there will be the school next month because the school can be closed whenever if COVID spreads so quickly. Some restaurants take reservations, and some of them don’t. If I get in a restaurant, I have to write my first and last name, the number of people will join together, the time I came in, and the date on a paper. Also all the people (also me) in restaurants have to sanitize their hands before they sit. And people cannot sit before any table is sanitized. People can order by online by taking a code on desks, or order to waiters or waitresses. If I look at the online menu, that is the same as the offline menu. And when I finished to order, I can see what I ordered and the total amount to pay on the online menu. They also appear when I ordered foods offline. I can pay them online. When I park my car on the side of roads, I can pay the time for parking online, also I can add more time online whenever I want. I don’t need to go back to the spot where my car was parked when I need to add more time. Online payment is developed by COVID and it’s convenient! -
