Benedictine communities dealing with COVID outbreak
The Catholic monasteries have had to change a great deal about how they practice their lifestyles. For nuns and monks alike, they have not been able to enjoy their monastic communities as usual. The majority of monks and nuns are in a higher risk category simply due to their age. Thus, the monastic communities have had to take extra precautions during the pandemic. This has made life more difficult and less enjoyable. Such restrictions have also impacted their ministry outside the monastery. -

How the Pandemic Has Affected Refugees
In this episode, we at the Podcast of the Plague Year were granted the opportunity to record interviews with two organizations assisting refugees that have been relocated to Arizona- RICE and Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest. Refugees are those who have been forced to flee their country because of a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, or political opinion. Almost 3 quarters of a million refugees have been resettled in the United States since 2008; they often come with very little resources to begin life anew once resettled. Life for refugees during resettlement comes with hope, but also with struggles to learn a new language, navigate new employment and educational systems and integrate into a new society. It is easy to imagine how a pandemic could intensify already existing struggles. -

THE COLOR OF CORONAVIRUS: COVID-19 DEATHS BY RACE AND ETHNICITY IN THE U.S.
This data sheet looks at the affects of Covid-19 mortality rates by race in North America. They do not interpret the data but the site says the following: We call on state and local health departments to release timely data about COVID-19 deaths with as complete racial and ethnic detail as is possible. As the data reporting improves, so too will our understanding of the devastating impact of this disease. This will inform states and communities about how to direct resources more equitably as well. -

A Virtual Funeral is Now Normal
On January 7, 2021 I attended a virtual funeral service for a friend's husband. This was the first time I had seen an online funeral. It was streamed on Youtube while the closest family and friends attended in person. I watched the service from my phone alone at work. It felt surreal. I recognized several friends on the tiny screen with familiar voices, but it felt far away. Since then I have spoken to a few people and mentioned how I felt disconnected to be on the other side of the screen. Many others had similar stories about these kinds of services. It was now normal to experience these things, but I can't shake the feeling of how much the experience continues to bother me. I hope some day online services won't be necessary. -

Covid-19
My first memory of Covid-19 was in late December of 2019. I was sitting on my couch watching TV when I heard my dad in the other room talking to my mom about how the new "coronavirus" desiese was getting worse in China. I was shocked at first about what he was talking about, so I went into the next room to ask him what was going on. He explained to me how there was an epidemic going on in China, and how some people have died. It all seemed very new and since it was all the way in China I wasn't very concerned with it other than thinking that it must be scary for residents of China. Fast forward a few weeks when we get back to school, lots of kids in the hallways were making jokes about the disease that was spreading, and were saying things like, "Don't forget to use hand sanitizer cuz of corona." Up until mid march the jokes kept on running, and the epidemic in China became more and more of a big deal. Until the night before march 14, 2020 everything was still a joke, and the rumor of us doing online school from home was still a running joke. But on the night of march 13 we all got an email telling us that we'd be doing virtual school from home for the next two weeks. The following Monday we started online school, and we all thought it would just be for two weeks. I was up in my room all day, and we only got short breaks in between classes. The first week everyone seemed to enjoy it was we had to use zoom calls for our class periods. The second week of school everyone including myself started not liking the idea of virtual school as much. Even though we got to sleep in later, people were sick of sitting at a desk almost all day long. Soon enough they extended our time we would be doing school from home because of a pandemic for longer. The coronavirus had spread to the U.S. and most people rarely left the house except to go to the grocery store because everything was closed. Whenever my mom or dad would go to the store they would wear a mask and gloves to make sure they didn't catch any germs. Lots of other people did the same. By this time almost the entire country was in lockdown. It had grown into a full-blown pandemic; other countries like Italy we also bombarded with the panic of Covid-19. Everything was a complete disaster just by mid-april. I had no idea when we would be going back to school, or when things would return to normal. I still don't as a matter of fact. by this time I thought we'd go back in may, but we didn't. In the first couple weeks of may, just a few days before my 13th birthday, everyone at this point hated online school, it was dreaded by children across the country. This gradually got worse and worse, teenagers' mental heath was tanking by a landslide. Quarantine was now taking over my life completely. Most days I would sit in my room the entire day even on weekends since we couldn't go anywhere. Throughout June was probably the worst moth for my metal heath, and I think many others would agree. Saying we were bored would be an understatement; I wasn't depressed much like a quite a few of my other friends ,as far as I'm concerned, but it felt like all of our happiness and livelihood had been taken from us since what we started lockdown. Soon after, in July things started to open up again, the cases for covid-19 were getting lower(which was good), and people basically assumed quarantine was over. The nest month since things were opening up previously we all thought we would go back to school, but a few days before school was supposed to start we were informed that we wouldn't be going back, and we had to continue with online school. I was extremely disappointed, and I thought hopefully we'd go back by at least October. The following months through Christmas break we stayed in online school, and almost nothing happened. I spent my days the exact same as the day before I would sit in my room do school and then look on my phone or listen to music(mostly One Direction, The Beatles, and 80's music). My life became dark, boring, and quiet. By this time everyone was so fed up with quarantine, since we had been in lockdown for the past 9 months. Even Christmas felt different this year; usually I'm super excited and this year I almost didn't even care about the holiday's and I can't explain why. I'm currently writing this on January 7, 2021 at 9:05 pm. We've luckily gone back to school yesterday for the first time in ten months. There are plenty of safety precautions to make sure none of us get sick like: wearing a mask, social distancing( staying 6 feet away from people), and there are even certain ways to we have to walk around hallways and the campus to keep us in order. I can already feel a change in myself since we went back yesterday. It already feels like things are getting better now that we don't have to do virtual school with zoom calls for classes. I'm also really glad I get to see my friends, and hopefully make some new ones. If there's anything I've learned from being a part of the current pandemic it's that you can't give up or give in to other things going on with the world or even within your own life. No matter how tuff things you have to remember who you are and what you want to be. If anyone in the distant future is reading this I want them to know that, and how lucky they are to be apart of something as wonderful as life can be. I found myself more often than never longing for the past hoping for answers, only to find out the past is inside all of us, and even when the hardships of reality kick in you have to remember how amazing it is to get to experience something as rare and beautiful as life is. So don't take things for granted and appreciate every moment because you'll never know when something as mind-boggling as a world-wide pandemic will happen to you. Long story short never give up on your hopes and fantasies; it might just be the thing you'll need the most. -

My Christmas traditions before and during Covid
Before Covid, this is how I spent my holiday. On Christmas Eve, my cousins, my aunts, and my uncles come to my house to celebrate. In the late morning, we have brunch and in the evening, we would play board games and card games while waiting for our dinner to cook. When the food is ready, we eat and do a White Elephant gift exchange with everyone. On Christmas morning, we open our presents and we eat breakfast. After we go to my best friend's house and exchange presents and have lunch, once we leave my friend’s house, we go home and mess around with our gifts until dinner, and then we would eat and be done. Since Covid, we didn’t have anyone come over on Christmas Eve and did not do a white elephant gift exchange. We tried to keep some of the tradition by playing cards and other games with my mom and sister. Instead of doing a gift exchange on Christmas with my best friend, we dropped off their Christmas gifts a couple of days early. The one thing that stayed the same was that I spent the holidays with my mom, sister, and grandpa. -

How Christmas was Different
Every year at Christmas time we have family over to celebrate. We would have skied at Mammoth Mountain California this year. However, due to Covid-19 restrictions my family was neither able to ski at Mammoth nor have family over. This made the holidays very different. We did not travel over the Christmas break, rather we spent the holidays, hiking and going to the beach. On Christmas Day my family hiked the Sandstone Peak trail. The peak is the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains this made for a great view, especially of the ocean. Another hike that my family went on was a hike up a mountain called Mt. Boney. We went to various beaches during the break, where I surfed a little. Overall, it was a different Christmas due to Covid-19 and we could not do some of the things we usually do in order to protect ourselves and our family members. -

My Christmas During Covid
This year's Christmas was a bit different, but it was pretty much the same as normal. We never travel over Christmas break so staying home wasn't too unusual. My uncle and grandfather ended up coming over for dinner because we see them pretty often, but we still stayed socially distanced. We were extremely blessed this Christmas with an amazing meal and lots of presents to open, but it was really nice to just sit down and catch up with everyone. I realized that even though we were all in the same place at the same time we hardly knew what was going on in each other's lives, in detail I mean. It was also probably the longest I had gone without looking at my phone or computer in the last year or so. Despite not being able to see all of my friends like I normally would, I think this has been one of the best Christmas' ever. -

Covid-19 Christmas
On March 13, 2020, America went into lockdown because of the virus of Covid-19. People lost jobs, and people in they're family, things became a lot different. Eight months later, it's Christmas time yet again. This year, it was a lot different for a lot of families, including mine. Lots of people weren't in the Christmas spirit since it was such a rough year, but even more people decided to embrace being at home and go all out with decorations, and anything 'Christmas' they could get their hands on. If I'm being honest here, kids all over the world look forward to gifts under the tree on Christmas morning. This year, since people where unemployed, and struggled to get things for their children. A lot of kids didn't get many or even anything this year. My family was very fortunate this year to even be able to celebrate Christmas since they both lost they're jobs back in March. Every Christmas, we do the same thing, stay at home so this year wasn't much different from the rest. This year really impacted a lot of people, but we all got through! -

Covid Christmas
This Christmas was kinda different than any other christmas for me. Covid did not really effect my family but what happened was that my cousins got covid on Christmas Eve Eve. So that effected a lot of our Christmas plans. We were supposed to go to my Nana and Papas but we could not because of our cousins and we did not want to risk giving covid to my papa. Then Christmas morning was normal because my Nana came over and we opened up gifts and i got a new gaming microphone. They my sister had her friend over at night and we played What Do you Meme and watched Christmas Vacation. That is what my Christmas looked like. -

Christmas with COVID
Christmas wasn’t much different this year. We aren’t big believers in shutting down for COVID. So, we didn’t change anything. Christmas Eve we had our family dinner only one relative didn’t come because his wife is a believer in shutting down if it was up to him he would have come. Other than that we woke up in the morning and had a great Christmas -

Covid 19 Christmas
During Christmas time with corona it was hard and defiiently annoying, I couldn't see my exterior family I could only see my family that I live with, it was also hard to see my friends which I didn't get to see because of the state lockdown. But I tried to make the best of it as I could because there's nothing you can do to completely stop it, we just have to follow the instructed orders by the state and do the best we can to stay safe and not be irresponsible in this time. -

What was Christmas like for you this year, and how was it different?
Christmas was little different for me this year. Normally, on Christmas Eve, my family and I go to my Aunt's house to celebrate. All of dad's side of the family is there. This year we wanted to do Christmas Eve at our house outside so we could be social distance. But that didn't happen because the weather was very bad. It would have been cold and not an enjoyable Christmas Eve. Instead we moved it to Christmas Day, so we could have some nicer weather. It was perfect. We played lots of games and enjoy delicious food. -

christmas with covid
Christmas this year was different for everybody. Well, usually for christmas we go and visit family. but this year, we couldnt. For this christmas i was with my mom because my parents are divorced. we decorated the house all nice, and had a christmas eve dinner. it was mashed potatoes, steak, green beans, and cranberries. Usually on christmas morning, we would all get up around 7 am, But this year, we got up at 10 am. the day went by normally, but the vibe was still off in a way i couldnt figure out. that concludes my christmas -

Christmas during COVID-19
Christmas this year was different because of multiple different reasons; the most obvious change due to the pandemic was that we didn't travel with friends and family like we usually do. Cancelling a huge tradition is obviously going to affect people, the holidays just didn't feel right. They went by quicker than usual and felt like it had never happened by the next day. My family tried to get as festive as possible but nothing was working to get in the holiday spirit. The holidays were definitely different but could've been way worse. -

A COVID Christmas
Every year, all of my relatives that live in Europe fly to California and celebrate Christmas with us. We make our traditional lamb on Christmas morning along with our favorite Armenian food. I look forward to Christmas every year but this year was different. The airports were all shut down and they weren't letting people who don't live in the U.S fly in. Because of this, all of my relatives stayed in Europe for this Christmas and we missed them greatly. I woke up my family at 8:00 am dragging them out of bed. Still wanting to include our grandparents we called them on Christmas morning once we were all up and opened presents over facetime. We told them how much we missed them and could not wait to see them again. We still enjoyed our Christmas this year, but there were just some things that we needed to fix to have a safe COVID free Christmas. -

Christmas in a Pandemic
My Christmas this year was different than the years before. What is usually a day full of family, was a day of no people, distancing, and zoom calls. My family usually has a giant Christmas eve party, but this year some of my family wasn’t even able to gather together. We were still able to have my cousins over, but it wasn’t the big party experience I was hoping for. My cousins also usually spend the night and open presents with us, but this year they had to go home. We ended up having a nice dinner and we even held a zoom meeting to try to connect with other family members who weren’t there...but it just wasn’t the same. It was the first year where it truly didn’t feel like Christmas. -

Covid Christmas
Ever since I was little I have always done the same thing every Christmas. Although the pandemic was raging everywhere, my family had the opportunity to travel and see relatives in our favorite place on earth Wisconsin. We were seeing older relatives so it was crucial that we got tested for the virus before we left. After getting our negative results back we hopped on a plane and flew to Wisconsin. The airport was empty and everyone was heavily masked and distanced. It was a ghost town. Thankfully, we were able to see everyone and still be safe during these crazy times. -

A diffrent Christmas
For many people Christmas in 2020 was a little different than in the years past. The Carona Virus on Covid 19 struck America and changed everything. In previous years we were able to go Christmas shopping with our friends in crowded malls and with no mask. But this year it was different and we would not know how long this difference would be. Having to stay in the environment of your home with not many family members to celebrate the holiday with. Having to Facetime friends instead of meeting up in person. It was different and we had to get used to it. -

My Covid Christmas
Don't get me started on Christmas. It was good but... stressful. It's a tradition for my family to go to Mammoth Mountain to ski and snowboard for the week of Christmas. It's always so so so much fun with all the snow but this year there was barely any snow! We thought cause of covid not so many people would be there and with there being little snow but THERE WAS A GOOD PLENTY OF PEOPLE! Since everything was closed we rented a condo from a family friend of ours and we arrive to the place and we find an orange envelope taped on the door! So we get inside, unload everything, and we open the envelope thinking it was from her to us. We find papers of a fines for the owner because they previous people who rented it were too loud and I guess it wasn't the first time it happened. People reported her condo and they ended up getting fined 1,000 dollars! It also said on another sheet of paper that she now can't have anyone renting out the condo because of traveling purposes. So, we had to stay undiscovered. We couldn't be seen by anyone that lived there because we might've gotten kicked out! So, for the rest of the week we had to stay silent. I felt like Anne Frank for Petes sake because we had to whisper. Finally when it came Christmas Day, we opened presents and everyday we went on the slopes so it was worth it in the end. -

Covid Christmas
My covid Christmas was a little different then normal. I did not get to go over to my cousins house for Christmas Eve so I spent Christmas Eve at my house. Usually my brothers come down and open presents with us, but they could not obviously because of Covid-19. My brothers came down later, but they had their mask on the whole time. I watched some NFl and NBA games, but it's not the same watching it without the chords. Me and my family made due with what he had and it was still and good Christmas -

My Christmas During COVID
This year for Christmas we all stayed at my dads house. I got LED lights and a lot of chocolate honeycomb. We usually go out to eat for dinner but this year because of COVID we had to stay home. We also wanted to have friends over but they couldn't make it because they ended up getting COVID. It felt strange not being able to do everything we normally do for Christmas such as watching my little sister see "santa clause". -

Covid Christmas
During December of 2020, Covid made shopping and knowing other's interests harder. We couldn't meet up with friends and host a secret santa. Nobody knew what people liked anymore since they couldn't see each other. Online shopping was hard since everything was delayed majorly. If having to figure out what people really wanted for christmas then having to find it or online shop (which could make it come late) this made a lot of people worried including me. Covid affected christmas in many bad ways but some good came out of it too. We got to see family a lot more and get closer with them, I got to see my brother who was in college. -

Covid Christmas
This Christmas was a lot different than the ones in previous years. Normally, my family would hop on a plane and travel to the midwest or the east coast to visit family. Because of the virus, we couldn't fly and visit our relatives so we wouldn't get infected with the disease. Over our Christmas break, we took smaller ski trips to Mammoth and in northern California. We spent Christmas and New Years as home though, which was actually a nice change from years past. Christmas could definitely gone worse and we just had to adapt our plans as we had all year long. -

What was Christmas like for you this year, and how was it different?
My Christmas this year during covid, has some differences from a typical year but not many. We usually have a Christmas party at my grandparents home in Newport with extended family that is pretty old, but this year it was just my cousins and family that I normally see. On Christmas morning nothing changed from a normal year and it was nice. -

Christmas
Usually for Christmas, my family and I go on a trip out of country. For example in previous years we went to Japan, Spain, Korea, and Italy. This year we didn't wanna risk getting covid so we made the smart decision to stay home. We didn't really know what to do for a stay at home Christmas because we had never done one. On Christmas eve my mom made an amazing break then for dinner my brother had spent 3 hours making us chilli. The chilli was pretty good. The morning of Christmas quickly arrived. I wasn't expecting to get any gifts since there was nothing I wanted but to my surprise i got many. My brother and sister bought me a new PC! My brother said he was gonna help me build it. After that we had an amazing breakfast. In between we made hot coco then had dinner. To wrap the day up we watched a movie together. Christmas was good. -

Christmas in Lockdown
Christmas in lockdown felt somewhat surreal. Because there was danger outside, in the streets, and a new president, it was very chaotic. The holiday did seemed rushed as well. Everyone felt the same-it was too fast, and felt off. I hope this year we can end off the holidays with a more positive note and spend more time appreciating it. -

The Hollow Holidays
Over the Winter holidays which are usually filled with laughter and joy from relatives across the state was rather boring compared to that but still the same eventful. With just me, my dad, mom, and dog there was a little commotion but lots of leftovers. Even though Christmas and New Year's were different they were not stopped. We had take out for New Years and a feast for Christmas whith just the three uf us I had brisket for all meals for the next week. Over Christmas, I got a mini-fridge as the big gift and have loved it since. So even though the 2020 holidays were different, they still raised my spirits no the less. -

Covid Christmas
I got out of school for Christmas break. Once I was out of school, I felt like it just was a normal weekend due to being online. Usually, I celebrate with my friends at school but we couldn't do that. I just tried to excite myself for Christmas but I just felt empty because I knew I couldn't see my whole family. Its Christmas. Usually, on Christmas Eve I get home from being with my uncle and grandparents. But we did not go to that so I was really down. I walked downstairs to the presents. I waited for my sister to get up. She got up we were ready to open gifts. My grandma was not scared of covid and still came even we told her not to. We were still happy to see her. It was fun opening gifts. But after I had fun, I realized we weren't going to be able to see my other grandparents after opening gifts. Usually, we go to our other family but not this time. I was sad because usually after opening gifts I am excited to go. I spent time with my one grandparent and also had fun with my parents and sister. But even though we had a fun time, it wasn't the same. -

Christmas with Covid
During Christmas, my family usually travels to any state in the USA. We don't usually have any state in particular, we just chose. Instead this year, we purchased a toy hauler and went out to the desert. The exact location was Armistead, California. It wasn't crowded where we stayed. My family was nervous, it was out first time staying in a toy hauler. We had perviously been to Armistead because we have dirt bikes and a dune buggy we ride, but this was different. In the end I really enjoyed it, it was a different, but yet very informative trip. We learned the value of everything we take for granted as well as learned new things, such as making a campfire. Overall, I really loved this new expirence, I would highly reccomend it. -

What was Christmas like this year? How was it different?
Christmas this year was definitely different. For the most part, it didn't even feel like winter, and I was surprised that it has almost already been a year since everything became different from Covid. This year for Christmas it almost felt like there was no excitement for it or no build up to get us excited. We didn't get to spend Christmas with my grandparents and cousins as we usually do, but I still got to be with my family. We were able to have a good meal and still enjoy Christmas ourselves, but it definitely didn't feel real. -

COVID-19 Christmas
This year, Christmas was normal for the most part. I had my one side of my family's grandparents and cousins over but I was not able to see the other side of my family. We didn't go shopping or to amusement parks like usual but we still had fun. I played golf and watched my cousins play tennis. I got shoes for Christmas and a guitar. I am super grateful that we stayed healthy. -

Quarantine Christmas
On Christmas day every year my family's cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents come to our house. We would open our gifts and play with them for a while and after a few hour they would all leave. Later that day we go to our other cousins house to eat dinner. Covid-19 didn't have a huge affect on my Christmas but a few things changed. One thing that we couldn't do was have people over, we only had our grandparents over. Other than that, my Christmas was the same as any other year. -

How was Christmas Affected.
I write this story on my Birthday, Jan 7, but I will talk about my Christmas December 25 and how it was. My Christmas was very much the same, I woke up, and opened my presents, I got a new Series 2 Elite Controller from Xbox and a rgb lamp. I then had a yummy breakfast of Pancakes where I then gave some other presents to my family. I then packed and we were off to Joshua Tree for a few days, as that was a vacation we went on, the vacation was very different with covid but that is not my prompt. Christmas Eve was the same as yesteryears, we relaxed in the house and went to bed early for the next day. During this time of year we usually never had any body over and never went anywhere, so it didn't change very much. That was my very basic and boring Christmas. -

My 2020 Christmas
This Christmas in the year 2020 was not much different as I expected than other years. The only really change was that my grandparents couldn't come. For as long as I remember I have spent every christmas with my grandparents. Also, because of the pandemic, all restaurant seating is closed. My family and I usually go out to dinner every christmas eve. But this year, we had it at home, which was not really odd since we only started going out for dinner christmas eve a few years ago. Other than those changes, we still did everything the same, we decorated, made cookies, got christmas pajamas, and more. However, it did not feel like christmas. Even though everything we did was the same pretty much, it did not feel like christmas. Listening to christmas music did not even make me feel like it was christmas. To sum up, my 2020 christmas was still pretty much the same.
