It's Up to You, New York, New York!
Every day at 7:00 pm, people in my neighborhood would cheer for the healthcare workers from their windows. Shortly after, people blasted the famous song "New York, New York" in the streets while everyone sang along. This strengthened the optimism and togetherness in my neighborhood during a very difficult time. -

My senior year in high school
The pandemic happened in my senior year of high school so it ruined my last year because I officially become a college student. I was really shocked knowing that I could never be in the classroom again. I wasn't expecting that because everybody thought it was going to be like a 2 weeks vacation for students. The challenge I was facing that is staying inside the house without stepping outside for 2 months. I drove me crazy because I like going on with friends and family, staying inside makes me feel like I've been locked up. And the fear of getting infected by Covid because you could put your family in danger. But as time goes, I get used to everything, I get to step outside after 2 months and I have to get used to wearing a mask in public which is not comfortable at all -

How Covid Affected me
Due to the unexpected virus “Covid”, my life has been impacted in many various ways. My life has changed in many different perspectives both good and bad. My life feels pretty good at the moment however it's a little bit stressful. It's been very hard to do online schooling rather than going in person. The homework didn't seem as mandatory as it does when you go to school. However I can say I'm getting used to and trying my best to do the best I can. I can say that this virus has made me experience a new perspective on life. It has taught me that it's very important to appreciate the smallest moments and not take anything for granted. As well, it had an impact on my social life because I'm not able to go out with my friends like I used to. I haven't traveled either because it's very easy to become infected with this virus. Everything has been going back to normal slowly, but I'm adapting to all the new regulations that are rising. -

Covid Distance
Me and my boyfriend were dating for about a year and a quarter when COVID hit, he's my best friend we were inseparable. Until covid hit, both of our families bad high risk members and it was to risky to see each other due to it putting our families at risk, it was about two months until I could see him, just see him and around three months till I could even give him a hug. I remember the first time we saw each other since the lockdown he was in his car and had to drop off something for my mom. I had to stand 7 feet away on the sidewalk and he wasn't allowed out of the car, it was heartbreaking. To see one of the people you love most in life for the first time in months and not be able to give them a hug, I just needed a hug. We are still together today, but this was hard on us as it was on many to not be able to to see or hug a loved one to protect one another is really hard even if it is to keep each other safe. -

The Banquet
It was my junior year of high school and a Thursday night in March at DePaul College Prep. My bowling team boys and girls had gathered for our annual end of season banquet, a last hurrah. We had fun; ate pizza together, talked about memories made during the season and more. At the end we started to talk about how 50 kids had called out of school that day not including teachers and how crazy the flu was this year. It wasn't the flu, but we didn't know that it would be our last time at school for the year and seeing each other in general. My boyfriend who played baseball was talking to the bowling and baseball coach about the Nashville trip the team was going take over spring break the next week, the coach said it might get cancelled. This was due to the way COVID was effecting it people down there, we laughed it off and said whatever its just the flu, it wasn't the flu. He got the email it was cancelled that night and the following night we got the email school was shutting down for an extra week after spring break. Yay we said "an extra week of break" but it wasn't just a week its months and still going. -

Running to Have a Feeling of Escaping Pandemic
With no long commute time to and from school, running became something I did often. I would go to the park and look at the lake after my run to see the sunset. I got to appreciate being outside more and getting fresh air. To feel the breeze by my sides as I ran. was relieving. -

Discord Friends
I became very close to my friends at the time of second wave of covid in India. I was studying in Chicago at the time and keeping in touch with my Indian friends was difficult until covid hit. It seemed like the whole world was online, and I could not see anyone in person. I started going on discord a lot more. I and my friends played GTA 5alot and I remember distinctly recognizing that Covid had helped me get closer to them in a weird way. -

My trip back To India
I study in Chicago. I am originally from India, so when the second wave of covid hit India I was still in school. Fearing my family's safety I decided to go back to India. Over the summer I spent most of my time inside trying to find oxygen sources for people in need. At one point my phone was filled with numbers of oxygen suppliers many of them turned out to be a scam artists. I still cannot believe how at a time when it seemed like everyone was dying from Covid people somehow still found ways to make money illegally. -

Cooking During Quarantine
As a 14 year old kid during quarantine, I had not much to do. I was separated from my friends and longing for ways to feel free. At times, I even found myself begging to go into school, wanting to go back to the old world. Now, everyday would be the same routine. I would wake up and get on my zoom class, eat, and repeat. Yet soon, I began cooking. I found a way to connect and find myself through the foods I baked with my family. Now, I cook whenever I can. -

Travel
Before the pandemic, my family, friends and I were traveling and getting to see amazing sites! This photo here is from Africa. We were able to have the luxury of going on this trip right before covid. When covid hit, we couldn’t go anywhere. Places got shut down and people were to stay in their homes. During the summer when covid started to get better, we planned a trip to Spain. A few week later I receive a call from my parents telling me our trip has just been cancelled because covid could shut down the borders and we could get stuck. To this day it is still scary to travel. When I used to be able to go and see the world, now I can’t because of covid. -

Sanitation Frenzy
This is a table filled with lots of masks and sanitizing products. Whenever it’s stacked up in my closet, I like to call it “Mask Everest,” because of how crazy it can get. Cooking During Covid
These photos are a couple of many foods I have created during the Covid-19 pandemic. Although these times were depressing and lonely in ways it was a gift for me to be given the time to find my passion as a chef. Homemade pasta takes 2+ hours, and homemade bread takes 4+ I never would have had the time to do this before Covid. I think that during this time it is very important to find a little bit of light in a time of darkness, and that's what I did. -

Protests During COVID
A few months into the quarantining period, protests for the Black Lives Matter movement began all across America in response to the recent unjust violence against African Americans. From my apartment balcony I was able to see the protests in action as they went through my neighborhood, capturing a moment that I thought would be relevant in history for years to come. -

What the pandemic!
March 13, 2020. I am sitting in the middle of senior civics class taking the biggest test of the year. My teacher gasps turning off the lights, and turns on the projector to reveal an email notice to all staff from the principal. This email is alerting us of a district wide shutdown on schools for two weeks. Everyone is confused, but being 17, thinks nothing of it and finishes our tests. Upon living school that day full of excitement, my mom calls my sister and I telling us to bring everything home from our lockers as the nation is shutting down. She tells us to come straight home, no stops under any circumstances. We ride home in eerie silence. Two years later, I still have a vivid memory of the moments leading up to lockdown in my bedroom for months. This pandemic has not only affected literally every aspect of mine and many others lives, but everyone has a very individualized story. -

The Year That Never Felt Real
When COVID-19 first started spreading in the United States I remember the hysteria that spread so quickly. Not very long ago the aisles in every grocery store in America were empty of non-perishable goods, water bottles, and toilet paper. In the first Fam Bam group chat messages we were making fun of the people buying up all the water bottles, and toilet paper but when we couldn't find toilet paper literally anywhere a little bit of fear struck our household. Just as everyone else did, we began to realize the reality of the new world we were living in and the differences it would make in our lives. In the initial isolation stages I am not going to lie, there was some enjoyment. No work, mandatory social expectations, I was isolated playing my video games, reading my books, ignorant to what was going on in the rest of the world around me almost. It is unhealthy to spend days on end in your room without much social interaction outside of family, sunlight, exercise, just normal day to day life. The walls of my room felt as though they started to shrink day by day, finally when I was called back to work everything was just... different. We were wearing masks, which in my opinion was not really a big deal at all at this point I had begun to understand the reality of COVID. What I experienced from here on was not enjoyable to say the least, when we began doing things in public again everybody felt sort of tense all the time, the energy in places felt dystopic. As a Starbucks Barista we had to mandate masks to every person that came into our store, as a 24 year old working as the manager on the floor I had to deal with some brutal harassment during this time. Every time a customer came in maskless it was my job to ask them "is it okay if I get a mask for you?" if they said no, I had to ask them to take their order outside or refuse them service. Whether I agreed with the policy or not was irrelevant, I had a job to do if I wished to maintain an income so I did my job. Sometimes I would get cursed at, called communist, and just dealt with genuine harassment on a regular basis. When the governor relieved the state of their state wide mask mandate but Starbucks maintained there's it was even worse for us we were the scape goats for a mask mandate and political arguments between two sides we had no part of, the community treated us like political punching bags. To be quite honest, the transition back into society was emotionally exhausting for everyone, but I will never forget how people treated me as an employee just doing there job. At the end of it, I didn't even realize the year had past it just didn't even feel like it really happened. -

Pandemic 2020
The pandemic affected many of our day to day lives. To start off it isolated us from socializing with friends, family, coworkers and others. It restricted us from doing our normal daily activities and routines. It made us miss important events and milestones that we can’t take back. For me the pandemic was very difficult, although the pandemic has not ended, the start of the pandemic was the biggest hardship. To start off, I had just started a new job that required me to help others get through the pandemic. I was assisting about 12 dr offices in scheduling patients. This was overwhelming to say the least and caused stress and anxiety. Many of us were facing challenges that can be stressful, overwhelming, and cause strong emotions in adults and children. Public health actions, such as social distancing, were necessary to reduce the spread of COVID-19, but that could make us feel isolated and lonely and could increase stress and anxiety. I know for me it was very hard not to be around my family. I’m very close with my family and not being able to see them and hang out with them definitely took a toll on me. For starters I was not able to be in the delivery room with my sister who was pregnant at the time and I was not able to meet my niece in person for months. The first time I met her was through FaceTime, which was not the same as being able to hold my first niece. Adults struggled adapting to new social routines—from choosing to skip in person gatherings, to consistently wearing masks in public. Daily activities that one would normally do were taken. For me my daily activity was the gym and with the pandemic it caused a shut down and once it reopened it was difficult to adjust to the new “normal”. -

More Time
I am submitting some personal thoughts that I’ve had while sitting at home during the pandemic. Before my life was constantly moving with school and work and friends and being out and about and when the pandemic hit it slowed everything down. With less time commuting between school I had more time at home to complete assignments to complete housework and still have time left over. I had time to think. I myself am an over thinker so when the pandemic hit and I found myself with all of this time all I could do his thing over and over and over again and play one scenario in my head 1000 times. And then I will go to sleep and I would wake up and think about the next thing over and over again. This pandemic gave me time to really dig within myself and find the things I don’t want to change because I had the time to think and organize. This also brought me into a bit of a dark place because with all this time to think I then began to look back at my experiences and even though they are lessons some of them are filled with regret and fear and anger and that brought me to a dark place. It also allowed me to grow and show me what I can do better, what I can incorporate in my daily life and how to be a better person for me. Even though it was as if the world was on pause my life said play. With all this time I could reorganize and re-prioritize myself and list out my goals and accomplish things that I haven’t had a chance to. It also allowed me to take an extra minute to look at how I’m treating myself and I thought let’s take some more time for personal care let’s take some more time for mental care to make sure that I am OK. Because I was granted more time. -

A week of Change
March 2020 came to change everyones lives, March 11th 2020 was our last normal day on campus. Everyone on campus was so confused whether professors were going to cancel class or move it to an online class, some professors had already moved it online and most continued with their normal schedule. Wednesday March 11th, 2020 after my class ended I went back home and as soon as I sat down in my living room I went on my instagram and saw that cuny had posted that all classes were going online for the rest of the semester. For me that day was the beginning of a lot of changes. My dad was already coughing but we didn't think it was covid. That next Monday he stopped working because he didn't feel well, both my brother and I stopped going to school and my mom stopped going to work as well. That week was crazy for us, we went to our Costco near by and bought so many things, canned food to be specific, and toilet paper let's not even go there (toilet paper madness is a whole different story). My mother and I went to our local Mexican supermarket and stocked up on everything we thought we needed, we made like 2 trips with each carrying 3 heavy bags. We had bottled water, 32 toilet paper rolls, 48 eggs, 4 gallons of milk, canned tuna, canned fruit (we didn't get fresh fruit because my parents had heard them say in the news how "the virus can get on the fruit" and if we did get we soaked the fruit and deep washed it after). That week was when our sleep schedule changed, that week we started having zoom meeting instead of in person meetings, that week my dad started getting worse and we couldn't sleep knowing he couldn't breathe properly. That week I still remember clearly. We went to my cousins birthday on Sunday not knowing that was the last time we were going to have a family gathering in a while. -

Life in Quarantine
During this corona virus pandemic I have learned how important simple hygiene was. Me and my family took the corona virus very seriously from the beginning of the pandemic. My little brother and I would always get yelled at if we forgot to disinfect ourselves with disinfectant spray and wash our hands the moment we get home from school. This was a huge issue in my family because of our limited living space, if one of us got exposed to the corona virus the rest of us would inevitably get it too. This is why simple hygiene is important especially during times like these where it can affect not just you but your family as well. -

Adventure Behind Uncertainties
Different life circumstances bring different versions of us, sometimes it is how we approach it that determines the type of adventure that we are going to have. The pandemic has brought a lot of uncertainties of what our usual lives would be like. For me, it was the repeated days of not knowing what to do next which led me to start reflecting on what I can do now. My first goal in this journey was to reach out to family and friends. During my time of reflection, I realized that I was losing touch with those close to me. Rather than calling once in a while or during birthdays and holidays, I call and text more often than before. My second goal was working on my health. I began making healthier lifestyle choices such as exercising more often, eating healthier food and drinking more water. I also added a skincare routine which I enjoy doing and continue to improve as needed. Prior to the pandemic, I had a passion for painting though I have not really put my skills to use like I should. But recently I started drawing again to bring my paintings to life. Hoping before the end of the year, I can have some paintings to share with family and friends. One of my happiest moment during the pandemic was creating small humanitarian projects such as donating food. It taught me that I can still be involved in my community regardless of the distance. As the pandemic continues, I am still adapting , learning about new ways to improve my health and wellness and continue to find ways to contribute to my community. -

Five years took for granted
Five. This was the number of years that I was able to spend with one of the most important people in my life, my uncle. From the moment I moved here in Brooklyn, he was one of the few that made me feel welcomed. He loved me, took care of me and supported me as if we'd know each other our entire lives. He stood as a second father figure to me, and he truly always managed to put a smile on everyone's face. But, on March 28th, 2020 COVID-19 got the best of him and unfortunately passed away. I was devastated and so heartbroken. Despite how painful his death was, it taught me many valuable lessons. But, I believe the most important one is to not take each day we get to spend with our families for granted. -

The Importance of Family During Covid-19
Throughout the pandemic, my parents tried to navigate the line between being flexible yet cautious. They did their best to keep my siblings and I safe while also trying to understand and accommodate our needs as young adults to connect with our peers. It was important that they balanced the health and well-being of not only our immediate family but our extended family as well. For as long as I can remember, my family has spent every holiday, birthday, and any other major or minor event with my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. My family, as well as my dad’s side of the family, are all local to Pittsburgh, so I have been lucky enough to grow up with them. My dad is one of five and all together there is fourteen of us grandchildren. In January of 2020, right before covid had started, our grandmother passed away from pancreatic cancer. This was a very hard time for my family as we were all incredibly close to her. However, as I look back, I am almost grateful that she is at peace and did not have to experience the crazy covid world in which we are currently living in. My uncle also had pancreatic cancer and had been living with it since his diagnosis in 2012. Our family did everything we could to get him the best treatment and keep him as healthy as possible. Covid made it extremely difficult to be with my family and it was something that I was not used to as I spend much of my time with them. However, our uncle was always our number one thought through it all as he was very at risk due to his underlying health conditions. Months and months went by without seeing my family and we had to continue to cancel get togethers due to my family members health concerns. Not seeing my family frequently was a struggle as I felt disconnected from them and events happening in their lives. My uncle began to fall very ill in September of 2020 and I felt that I was unaware of the extent of his illness. The disconnect and miscommunication from quarantine and covid made it very difficult to get through his time of sickness. Unfortunately, my uncle had passed away shortly after falling ill. It was difficult to think of all of the time we as a family could’ve spent together over the course of the pandemic and all of the memories we could have been making with our uncle before he passed. The pandemic had negatively affected many aspects of life in general but losing a loved one in addition is indescribable. As horrible as the pandemic has been, it has taught me many important lessons in life. I have always loved and appreciated my family but the events that occurred during the pandemic had only brought me closer to them and made us stronger in the end. -

Working From Home
Every morning I would wake up at home smelling the coffee my mom just made and it felt strange having her there when I woke up, normally she would already be at work. We were all told we weren't allowed to go anywhere unless it was an emergency and it was scary at first. You kept hearing on facebook and the news about schools being shut down and everyone getting sent home because they came into contact with someone who had Covid. Then came summer and no body could do anything then, they couldn't go to the beach and feel the hot sun. We were like caged animals because we couldn't go anywhere. I remember begging my mom to let me just go to walmart with her because I wanted so badly just to get out of the house. Then the boarders started to shut down and the news started only reporting on how high the death toll was. Then were educing this fear into people, which eventually made some people go crazy. For example my grandmother never left the house, ever, she ordered all of her groceries online and would immediately sanitize everything. During all of this we weren't allowed to see her or my grandfather because of how scared they were. With me finishing my freshman year from home and my whole sophomore year from home i rarely got socialization. There was a point where the only escape I got from everything was going to work. Just being around my work family never fails to brighten up my day. They always have a new wax melt scent and you can always smell it when you first walk in, well that and BBQ. But overall covid affected everyone differently for me it wasn't as bad. But for all the people who lost friends and family they are the ones we all need to bring attention to. -

Chuggin along
My experience with the pandemic is one and one thing only and that is that school became really hard for no reason at all. Ever since the pandemic schooling has been hard online and even harder coming back to school in person. I think that it is so unfair to have such a change up in an education system developed over many years just be stripped down and rebuilt using sticks and glue. -

Silver Linings
The past year was a very hectic one. Many things changed over 2020 and overall it was a whirlwind of a year. While there are many bad things to point out about it there are some silver linings too. Due to the coronavirus, we had to quarantine for a while. This forced me to spend a lot of time with my family, but I am very thankful for this now. My brothers are 4 and 1, but I am 14. This means that in 4 ½ years when I leave for college they are going to be 5 and 9, so I need to spend as much time with them as possible before I leave and start a new life away from them. 2020 showed me how important family really is and I will no longer take it for granted. Another silver lining of 2020 was learning that I have a love for baking. When quarantine started in March I would be extremely bored because I had to stay home. I was tired of staring at a screen for so long, so I knew I had to find something to do. This is how I stumbled upon baking. I made sugar cookies for my family one time and I knew I had to continue baking. I fell in love with it. Now I use it to help me calm myself. Being in control of everything I’m doing makes me feel grounded, so even when I’m stressed about something going on in my life, baking makes me feel in control so that I can handle the situation correctly. From the outside 2020 might have been bad, but if you look for the silver linings you realize it might’ve been just the year you needed. -

Record of the Day
I didn’t do very much of anything today, but I’ll give a record of it anyway because maybe it was more interesting than I thought. First things first, I woke up at 6:40 am and didn’t move out of bed until 6:50 am when my dad yelled for me to get up. Then I got ready for school, helped get my two little brothers ready for school, and drank a smoothie for breakfast. We left kind of late today, so the older of my two younger brothers was almost late for school. Then, to make sure my youngest brother was on time and so was I, my dad dropped me off at my brother's drop-off spot and I had to walk the rest of the way to school. I had advisory and the assembly first, so nothing too exciting. Next, I had science where we went over our last experiment and the homework, had a mini in-class quiz, and then we got to finish The Martian. Once science was over I had English where we just worked on our papers that are due Thursday. Thankfully, after that was lunch and recess which were a nice reprieve from schoolwork. After lunch, I had math where we learned about linear systems of inequalities. My last class of the day was PE where I am currently doing volleyball. It was pretty fun, except for my arms were sore after because the coach had us using the heavy balls to practice setting. I went home after PE, had some nut mix for a snack, and went on my phone for a while before starting my homework. I took a break from that at around 5 and went on a walk with my family before coming home and eating dinner. I finished up my homework a little after that and spent some time with my family before going to work out and shower. After I showered I went to bed, and that was my day! -

Fun Weekends
This was when it was a 3 day weekend and everything that I did during that weekend because it was one of the best weekends I have had a year and I wanted to tell you all what is a fun weekend to me and how to spend a 3 day weekend with your friends and family. I hope that you like the Coronavirus journal. This weekend was so fun because it was a 3 day weekend and on top of that I got to hang out with my friends and we did a lot of fun stuff like going to Surge the trampoline park and we also went to Walmart and that was really fun to just mess around and make jokes and play with stuff there. We did not break anything but we did get a basketball and play with one of the goals that were not blocked off. And we got the bikes and we rode them around to see which was the best. And at Surge, we had so much fun like for instance we played dodgeball with people and we got to meet a lot of nice and cool people that were on my team and I was given a nickname of the ninja because I could doge every ball and catch them and I was last almost every game it was really fun trying to dodge the adults because they would throw it very hard and you had to have a good reaction time to dodge them. But after Surge, we then went to my friends’ house and went on his trampoline and then we went to Audubon Park and messed around there and we also went to the baseball fields at the fly and avenger and we played a football game, baseball game, and a kickball game and we where there for a couple of hours and it was so hot but just so fun and I can not wait until we do it again someday. -

Save Our Old
A must of old in our life, as a guide, teacher and Grand people at home. None we with out them, keep away (news resources) but must must take care of them in period of pandemic
