I work at a prominent community college in California. When we first started hearing about the virus we took precautions right away in the office. First those employees over 65 were sent home to work remotely, because they were identified early on as being a risk group. Then we decided as a college to take all of the on ground classes and convert them to online for the remainder of the spring semester. Shortly after that, most all of the faculty and students were sent home to shelter in place. Those remaining were the lab classes in the industrial arts area and some CTE programs. Staff remained on campus and weeks went by as we continued to operate the college. Slowly staff were asked to work remotely from home, taking their work home with them. Division Offices remained open, as did the IT and Facility areas.
The community continued to walk in the door with concerns and questions. Some of us felt we were at risk of infection, because no one really knew much about the virus at this point. I personally felt the effects of stress building. We were asked if we would like to begin working from home in mid-March by our supervisor, but there still wasn’t a directive from the District, so I was concerned. I took work home and my plants, not knowing if and when I would return, because of my age; almost 62. I worked remotely for seven days and then over the next weekend I became incapacitated, due to stress not only regarding the virus, family dynamics, elder care and stress of trying to do my work from a makeshift home office. I was out of the office for nine weeks, while my doctors prescribed slow acting medicines. I came out of my depressed state and now there are still so many things we don’t know about the virus.
Besides the toll on me physically and emotionally I also saw a huge chunk of my retirement disappear, as the stock market tumbled. $40K lost out of one account alone. At my age I’ll likely never recover. I expect there will be fallout in other areas as well. While we were all wondering where we could go to buy toilet paper and disinfectant wipes, airlines were parking their planes, car rentals were parking their fleets and the housing market became a whole new game. Where will this all end up is anyone’s guess. What it has done is, the virus has been the great equalizer. Were all in this together. It knows no boundaries except that seniors appear to be the hardest hit group and are accounting for the largest percentage of deaths.
On a personal note, I have not been able to meet my new grandson who was born on Mother’s Day because of Covid risk concerns my daughter has and I have to respect that and meet him over the Internet. My own Mom is 81 and will no longer accept a hug from me. It’s just sad.

Friday the 13th has always been a superstition people believed in. I never really did until this year. It was the last day of the school year and the first day of true panic world wide. School was cancelled without warning and no one knew that that would be the last day we ever saw each other in the same setting.

A news article about a group of women in Western Canada who started a group, which then became a trend, where they dress up in costume and deliver wine and other treats to unsuspecting residents who may need a pick-me-up. The game 'Ding Dong Ditch' as referenced in the title is one where people, usually children or teenagers, ring a doorbell and then run away and hide as a joke. In this case they are brightening up people's days while avoiding physical interaction which could spread the virus.

I spent a lot of time in that place, you could say it kind of became a reality. Basically being stuck at home and working laboriously on schoolwork and studying for online exams such as the AP tests. The work only stops on the weekend where I can finally relax and do whatever I want. Once the weekend ends it's back to the endless labor and tiresome assignments that keep being piled on top of each other.

Coronavirus has affected everyone in some type of way. This meme accurately represents how many people feel about this year so far, and how it has been a not so great start to a new decade. Covid-19 has taken away many opportunities and places limitations on what we can and cannot do. Personally, coronavirus has prevented me from traveling this year, as I have canceled multiple trips to abide by CDC guidelines and safety precautions. While I was looking forward to traveling this year, I know it’s important to stay inside to keep myself and others safe during this time.

This meme resembles how COVID-19 can really be a very communicable disease. The fact that even being near someone who we love dearly can cause spread is already scary, and that we must try as much as possible to minimize the cause. To me, I want to stay home as much as possible to lower the spread of the virus, but at the same time I miss my loved ones and my friends. This meme may not seem important, but in reality it does show the tensions in society about how COVID-19 is affecting all of our lives.

Boarded up Bars in the Byward Market: Heart and Crown Posters
Many establishments in the popular shopping, dining, and bar area of the Byward Market have boarded up their front windows with plywood to reduce the chance of robbery while they remain closed due to the pandemic and restrictions of gatherings.
While some remain plain, or are painted black, other establishments chose to hire muralists to liven up the natural wood with images related to vibe of each bar. Some also plastered the wood with posters.
One such poster display is on one of the boarded windows of the Heart and Crown pub not taken up by murals. Riffing off the popular Second World War posters in Britain which read "Keep Calm and Carry On" they read "Keep Calm and Shop Local" as well as "Keep Calm and Support Local Artists" in an attempt to create a sense of solidarity and duty when facing this crisis. They were created by the Byward Market itself.
