On Friday the 13th of March 2020, Garden Grove High School's Orchestra program was set for their 2nd festival of the season. We were supposed to leave school at 1:30pm and bus all the way to Beckman High School in Irvine, California, 30 minutes away. But of course, Friday the 13th was a bad omen, and it was no exception this time. The festival was cancelled the morning of, at 8am. Once we were told so, anyone in our classroom would tell you that a gust of sadness engulfed the room. We had worked endlessly since August for our short performance but it was all gone to waste. 8 hours later, at 4pm while I was at Track practice, everyone got the news that school would be cancelled for a month. By then, our concert season would only be halfway through so we were hopeful. Unfortunately, school had been cancelled until the end of the school year and our performing arts program will, no doubt, be suffering in the aftermath of this pandemic. Friday the 13th really is a bad sign.

Every quarter, our Vietnamese teacher assigns us a project where we must film a video based on a topic we learned during that specific quarter. Normally, we would meet up in person to film the video, but when the pandemic became more severe and stay-at-home orders were put in place, we had to be more creative with how we filmed. Unable to meet up in person, we resorted to Minecraft in order to film our 3rd Quarter video, which was based on a Vietnamese novel we read in class. #GGHSAPUSH #distancelearning

When I saw an image of this front page on the internet, I thought it was from 100 years ago.
And then I got my copy.
Every year on the date, the 3,000 victims of September 11th are read aloud at the World Trade Center.
It takes 3 hours.
If we were to read the names of each person who has died of Covid-19 so far, it would take over 4 days, without stopping.
It would cover each Sunday issue for over the next two years.
Today I read 1% of those names.
Each of those names was allowed half a sentence to describe them.
Half a sentence for a lifetime on the front page of The New York Times.
I picked out some of my favorites:
-“We called him the grand Poobah”
-her backyard birds ate right from her hand
-could fix almost anything
-first black woman to graduate Harvard Law school
-quick with his fists in the ring
-her will was indomitable
-he could spit a watermelon seed halfway across a double lot
-agent who turned on the CIA
-her favorite quote was ‘I am as good as you are, and as bad as I am’
-cancer survivor who lived as a deacon
-nothing delighted him more than picking up the bill
-saved 56 Jewish families from the Gestapo
-could be a real jokester
-thought it was important to know a person’s life story
-maestro of a steel-pan band
-saw friends at their worst and made them their best
-engineer behind the first 200mph stock car
-discovered his true calling when he started driving a school bus
-made the best Baklava ever
-emergency room doctor who died in his husband’s arms
-leader in integrating schools
-architect behind Boston’s City Hall
-shared his produce with food banks and neighbors
-family believed she would have lived the traditional Navajo lifespan of 102 years.
-loved his wife and said ‘yes dear’ a lot
-mother to a generation of AIDS patients
-worked long hard hours and still made time for everyone
-walked across the Golden Gate Bridge on opening day
-liked his bacon and hash browns crispy
-more adept than many knew
-would stay awake the whole night shift because she didn’t want anyone to die alone
-freed from life in prison
-her last words were ‘thank you’
.
.
.
Seven small towns I thought no one else had heard of.
Six women who reminded me of my mother.
Five people my age.
Four holocaust survivors.
Three 9/11 responders.
Two couples who died together.
One person I’ve met.
And a 5 year old girl.
They didn't get a funeral.
They didn't get to say goodbye.
I've been in my apartment for 71 days. I've cried four times.
Three of those times, was while I read this.
Have fun at your barbecue.

This is a news article that details how San Francisco is managing their homeless population during the COVID-19 outbreak. Based on CDC recommendations, San Francisco secured hotel rooms to provide shelter to their homeless population. The project is called "Project Roomkey." Additionally, under a "harm reduction" strategy, the city is providing alcohol and access to purchase medical cannabis to prevent withdrawals for addicts who may otherwise leave the provide shelters to retrieve said substances. The article highlights similar measures across the Bay Area.

Calicraft, a brewery located in Walnut Creek, California, launched "the Quarantine Blues Juicy IPA" during the state's shelter-in-place. Restaurants and bars across the state are struggling to stay in business and some establishments, like Calicraft Brewing Company, are finding creative ways to drive business despite the difficult conditions. I discovered the beer on Memorial Day and it brought some much needed levity to the day. The label includes a clever poem/song that reads: Sittin' on the porch, got nothin' to do. Grab yourself a can of the Quarantine Blues. Kidz going crazy, you could use a little hazy. Crack yourself a can of the Quarantine Blues. Runnin' outta TP, makes you feel kinda queasy. Pour yourself a glass of the Quarantine Blues! Drink up: at home. Pair with: Tiger King, Homemade Bread. calicraft.com // @califcraft

Shelter in place has been lifted. This photograph is the first time my children have been allowed in public with masks. We went to a local bakery "Famous Creations" for cupcakes. The boys (Levi and Canyon) were excited to see strangers and choose a treat.
As we were there several other families arrived but stayed far apart from each-other.

Shelter in place has been lifted. I decided to go inside Starbucks for the first time in months. The chairs and tables are now against the wall. There is a path marked for patrons that guide people from the door, then counter, then pick up, then exit out a different door. There is plexi-glass around the entire work area. The employees have a log-in station by the front door where they must wait until another barista comes to take their temperature before they are allowed to work (with a mask).

This is the last normal day I had as a teacher. We were talking about covid-19 earlier and I read the students the current numbers. One student asked me if I thought they would close our school. I told him it was a long way off and not to worry.
I took this photo to sent to the principal because yet again my classroom was filled beyond capacity with students sharing chairs and students at my desk. This was the last photo I have on my phone of a normal day, an hour later it was announced that our district was closing schools.
As the students left the teachers yelled after them to keep in touch, we would figure it all out, and we loved them. You can see the life of these students. So much energy and light.
I miss them terribly.

I am a parent advocate for Kawasaki Disease. I have given talks at symposiums for parents, groups and doctors and run the Kawasaki Disease Northern California Facebook pages. Levi my son is a 2X survivor and had Kawasaki shock syndrome the first time it nearly took his life. He is 11 now and wants to help me educate the community.
About a month ago doctors in the UK announced a Kawasaki like illness in children who were diagnosed with Covid-19. Since that time I have received numerous messages and phone calls from concerned community members. This video was made to alleviate fears and encourage people to donate to read watch that has begun at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego.

An organization called Tenohashi set up in a small park in Ikebukuro (northwestern central Tokyo) to hand out free food, clothing, masks, medical attention, etc. People were very organized, waiting in line at tape markers placed on the ground roughly two meters apart. I donated some extra facemasks I didn't need (including the two "Abe no masks" provided to me as part of a relief package from the government). I think they've been set up there every Saturday, at least, if not more regularly than that.

I noticed at my local supermarket yesterday that, seemingly all of a sudden, toilet paper and facial tissues are totally in-stock. Here in Tokyo, it was hard to find such things (not impossible - check three or four stores and you'd find one package) for quite a while. And now, boom, no problem. Couldn't find any pasta sauce today, though.

My son participates in a virtual field trip with his kindergarten class to the San Diego Zoo. His teacher was new to a lot of these technologies, but when she learned that school would be closed for the remainder of the year, she made an interactive plan for her students to make sure learning and community were still there. My son spent at least an hour following his class "field trip" at the zoo. They have these field trips every Friday. #distancelearning

This is a model of the social dynamics of online learning, especially human interaction via Zoom meetings. This is a common model adopted by the university. Notice how smoothly inputs are converted into outputs, thus pointing the efficiency and productivity of the overall system. As university administration have shown, the success of this model (for capital gains) can be shown in its applicability to all aspects of teaching and learning. It should also be said that a pandemic presents great opportunity for more intensive technologisation/bureaucratisation of all aspects of human life, and the extent to which communication and exchange of information can be ordered into narrow channels of utility and efficiency.
