How Covid-19 Affects The Mode of Education in Fall 2020 (Duke University)?
Given the fact that I am a newly admitted graduate student in Duke University, it is important for me to know the mode of education would be like in the coming academic semester or foreseeable future. -

College Board AP Exams
In time of the coronavirus, the College Board shifted their AP exams to be taken online this year. My first AP exam, which was Calculus AB, had me a bit nervous, but it really spiked the day before my exam. I found out that people who already took their AP exams couldn’t submit their forms due to a glitch on the website. Luckily, I was able to finish and turn in all of my exams with success, and even if I don’t pass these exams, I can say that I proudly tried my best and gave it my all during this time of social distancing. -

Quarantine Sucks But So Does Student Debt
It has become a universal agreement that Covid-19 is absolutely one of the worse things to happen on this planet. Many people have been impacted in many ways, whether it’s not being able to see their loved ones while they’re on their death beds, contracting the virus, losing your job, your main source of income losing their job so your household takes a financial hit or losing your best parts of senior year. For me, the most that Covid-19 has done as far as negatively, is by stripping my senior year away...and my first fall semester of college. As much as I have been in mourning since it was announced we were no longer getting what we were promised at the young age of six, such as proper graduation, I have matured in my position and realized that all I’ve lost was my senior year, where others have lost their loved ones or even their lives. I won’t go much further into my senior year when my everyday life has changed way more above that. I have a job. Before quarantine, I was working very few shifts due to school hours restricting my work hours. The main point of having this job was to save up money, which I will wrap back around to why it’s actually a good thing that my fall semester got announced it will predominantly be online. When quarantine happened, I was fortunate enough to be amongst the very few that did not lose their job. When the news broke out that we will be put on quarantine but the restaurant I work at will stay open, my manager jumped right on that and scheduled me as much as possible. And I didn’t complain one bit. This is a perfect opportunity for me to catch up financially so I am not totally swamped in student debt. This is the part where I come full circle and explain why I’m actually glad my school announced that they’ll be starting the fall semester online. Again, I am guilty of mourning losing my “first day” of college, but I realized, I get an entire semester where the majority of the expenses I would be paying for, I won’t be and I will still be working. It won’t be much, but as someone who isn’t very frugal, quarantine has been an enormous aid to my bank account. With stay-at-home order, I’m never going out with friends and spending money on things I have plenty of at home. My point of talking about all of the great things that have happened to me during quarantine is not to dismiss how terrible this entire pandemic has been worldwide, it’s to show that even though this sucks, I’ve been trying my best to look at things optimistically because with me losing my graduation and not being able to see my friends, I haven’t been getting a whole lot of serotonin lately, so I have no choice to look on the bright side. -

Ben's First Day of Homeschooling. Ben is Eight
The transition from in-person classrooms to remote learning was very difficult for many parents. Most parents didn't have any idea where to start. Ben's school assigned him a journal project and this is his entry from his first day at home. -

Kindergarten Virtual Field Trip
My son participates in a virtual field trip with his kindergarten class to the San Diego Zoo. His teacher was new to a lot of these technologies, but when she learned that school would be closed for the remainder of the year, she made an interactive plan for her students to make sure learning and community were still there. My son spent at least an hour following his class "field trip" at the zoo. They have these field trips every Friday. #distancelearning -

Photo taken of last day of work
Working at a school during COVID-19 has felt like a whirlwind. The transition to an online format with no notice and a sort of "learn as we go" training has been tiring. I'm grateful that things worked out and that schools were still able to provide quality educational opportunities despite being shuttered. Turning in my keys for summer was bittersweet. It'll be nice to take time to reflect and decompress over the summer, and plan for a potential return in the fall. It was a very odd first year in education, and an odd way to end the school year. A cloud of uncertainty hangs over the future and what will happen next, but if educators can survive this year, they can survive anything. #ASU #HST580 -

Adapted Workstation
Since mid-March, my school has been doing online distance learning (ODL). And due to ODL, my kitchen counter has become my one-and-done workspace. It is my classroom, my art room, my breakroom, and, still, my kitchen counter. It has become a bit cluttered with my laptop; a desktop; a keyboard, mousepad, and cd drive; two sets of earbuds; my Eiffel Tower art project; a water glass; some random candy; a charging cable; an empty yogurt cup, a grapefruit half, and some eggshells from breakfast; a pencil; a USB drive; the list goes on. On the floor and table behind the frame are even more art supplies; a computer case that has been empty since March; my school books, binders, and notebooks; more pencils and pens; a graphing calculator. Almost everything I could possibly need during school – books, food, pencils, etc. – can now be found within a five-foot radius of where I sit; in effect, further limiting the already negligible distance I travel every day. 10:00 am. In the middle of my first period class. -

Educator Zoom Meetings
Educators are prohibited from entering schools in much of California. Distance meetings are numerous. Today, Teacher Dana Bell meets with educators at Sem Yeto continuation high-school are meeting to plan for next years WASC visit, a task that can not wait till school resumes. Working from home is a challenge many educators are facing. This meeting was disrupted several times by the participants children and pets. In this particular image, the isolation educators are experiencing is particularly felt. A contrast from the normal hustle of the classroom. -

Distance Learning in Allaikh
Schools of Chokurdakh, Olenegorsk, Berelyakh learned in Russian Ust and Byagnyr where they wore masks and kept a safe distance. After a few weeks, an order was issued to transition to distance learning. “During the restrictive regime, parents and legal representatives have received applications and consent to transfer students to distance learning. The educational process is carried out through landline and cellular telephony, through the email of parents (legal representatives) and through the educational platform “Uchi.ru”. Grades are set for completed assignments by students. On the passage of the program and educational material, teachers keep a report on the control sheets for the implementation of program material, and the responsible coordinator of the correspondence form of training forms sheets of teachers' working hours. Certain categories of students for the period of the restrictive regime are provided with food in the form of dry rations, which set includes: stewed beef, condensed milk, paste, cereals, pasta, sugar, jam, etc.” #IndigenousStories -

Go Back to Normal!!!
I have learned in this quarantine that is you want to do something and not be lazy, then you must attack it head on and just go for it. The hardest part of accomplishing something is definitely starting. If you can start the thing you want, then you are more motivated to finish it because you have already spent time and effort trying to accomplish the thing you want. Even when I get out of this quarantine, I am going to try to apply this to my daily life. I really wonder when things are going to get back to normal, or if things will go back to normal. This might be the new normal which is a scary thought. I hope this is not the new normal because I had a plan for my future. Well kind of, but this is definitely not what I had planned. I am trying to remember that it is not about what I want for my future or what I think is supposed to happen in my life. It is about God’s plan and what he wants to happen in my life. *Original text in Creator: Nicole Dumitrascu #LSMS #NSD -

Oklahoma Rural Schools Publish Newspaper to Creatively Reach Students Through Distance Learning Requirements
The Oklahoma public schools in Dibble, Washington, and Lexington published five weekly newspapers that offered lessons for Pre-K through 12th grade students. This collaborative effort was organized by the three school district to offer distance learning while overcoming the lack of internet access to rural students. These papers were delivered for free to every student in each of the three school districts. Oklahoma public schools were ordered closed by Governor Stitt beginning March 25th and remained closed through the end of the school year. Dibble teacher Kelly McDaniel, a weekly contributor to the 2nd grade math and science section of the paper, provided the examples for the photograph. *Original text in "Creator" and "Contributor:" Clinton P. College During Quarentine
So the semester is basically over now. While I do have a few more days to finish up final projects I’m just about finished. With that I can confidently say that being in college during a pandemic is strange, and finals during this has been absolutely wild. I’ve had classes where teachers simplified everything to help the students deal with everything, but I’ve also had teachers essentially double the workload each week because we “have more time now.” I have teachers and classmates talking about my home over zoom. I’ve missed entire classes because the email with the link and time for the zoom meeting didn’t show up until an hour after it ended. Staying motivated has been more and more difficult as time has gone on, and with every class opting for a final project or essay rather than a test has left me with less time than before, especially when I also need to help my family. All-nighters have gone from once or twice a semester to a weekly occurrence, and even then, I still barely kept up with everything. I can’t begin to explain how excited I am to have nothing to do like everyone else. -

Goodbye, Spring 2020
By order of the governor, all Kansas K-12 schools closed for the remainder of the academic year to curb COVID-19's spread, making online classes a necessity and rendering normal spring-time activities, such as sports and commencements, an impossibility. This makeshift message on Wichita Northwest's campus expresses an all-too familiar sentiment that can be felt all across the country, from the East and West Coasts and in the nation's Heartland. -

Notes During Class 10 (A lesson on Anne Frank)
This image is apart of a series of screenshots taken during lessons via Microsoft Teams.Teaching my third graders from afar has become a challenge and a blessing at the same time. None of us knew of Mr. Microsoft Teams until we were forced to meet him. The way he impacts our lives is sometimes frustrating and other times satisfying. Unlike classroom noise, the chat that goes on during lessons are now mixed in with the lesson and available for all to participate- including the teacher! It's silent and said with caution and other times daring. (I've blurred the faces and redacted the names to protect the students' privacy.) -

When Grandma Becomes the Teacher
Having two parents working full time as a high school teacher and a university director, my kids now rely on their grandma, a retired teacher, for classroom instruction. She does most of the day to day communication with their teachers, keeps them on a daily schedule, plans activities, and fixes lunch. Without an intergenerational household, my kids' daily schooling would be near impossible. -
