Nurses Cry for Help
This is a cry for help that my sister and her manager posted on Facebook. This came at a time when nurses were running on empty as far as supplies were concerned. They needed anything they could get their hands on. The panic caused by the virus led to people hoarding PPE and essentially taking it from the hands of the people that really needed it. Because of that, the nurses needed to reach out to anyone that would listen. They sent a message to the community asking for help and putting the list of items they were short of in the amazon wish list. Thankfully within days they were able to get enough supplies to last them a few weeks but they are still reliant on the community. The pandemic has asked a lot from the frontline workers and the stress they've endured isn't something I'd wish on my worst enemy. If their is any way to make their jobs a bit easier, I think we owe it to them to do it. -

Masks: Socially Responsible and Fashionable
I don’t think I’ve worn jeans, or really anything other than leggings and t-shirts since I started social distancing. I’m pretty sure my makeup drawer hasn’t even been opened since March. I wear a mask when I go grocery shopping, so why even bother? A friend of mine shares Facebook and Instagram posts nearly everyday of herself wearing makeup and a mask that matches her outfit. As you can see from the photo she allowed me to screenshot, she adapted her need for social responsibility to fit with her own personal style. I think it’s time to feel like myself again; maybe get matching Sword Art Online masks for my daughter and I. -

The arts
I saw this as I scrolled Facebook the other day. I must admit that the arts have never really been in my scope of interest. And by that, I mean performing arts and such. COVID has affected my personal life in many ways but I never thought about the arts and how they have all been affected. This photo changed that for me. As a mom, kid sport games would affect me much more but this picture forced me to look outside of my bubble and into the loss and effects of other groups of people. I think the reality of the arts, specifically performing arts, is that it has been on a slow decline for a few years and COVID just caused devastation to that. I hope posts like this pop up on people's feed like it did to me and force people to look outside of their own bubbles. -

No Hocus Pocus Door to Door
The Mayor of Columbus, MS, Robert Smith, and his office issued a public notice on October 22, 2020 that there should be no door to door trick or treating. In place of door to door trick or treating the city and fellow organizers have planned events for trick or treating throughout the city. This action is helpful and thoughtful for all citizens involved. It allows the citizens to remain safe in their homes if they so wish or it gives citizens the opportunity to celebrate Halloween during the pandemic. Of course social distancing will be practiced for all Halloween events. This is important for children to celebrate a fun holiday while practicing social distancing. Also important to realize the safety and health conditions for others that are at high risk for Covid 19. -

Don’t forget the tongs
The closer we get to Halloween the more I’m seeing the creative ways in which people are safely trying to keep the celebration going. This reminder was posted on the Facebook page of Marine Corps base of Hawaii page. My family was stationed there last year and still follow the page now. I chuckled a little when I saw one of the requirements -please use tings while giving away candy. It seems so silly but I guess what ever keeps people safe right? I can understand people’s need to get out and socialize, it seems like very few are willing to continue social distancing. At least people are trying to find alternatives like passing out candy with tongs. Hopefully they won’t get a wave of new COVID cases in base. -

Stress and hair loss
I’ve felt a lot more stressed since my daughter started school this fall. I’ve also noticed that when I take a shower, hair washes out with each wash. Losing some hair seems normal, but it’s felt like a lot of hair lately, or at least a lot more hair than should fall out. It’s a really subjective measurement, but let’s just say it’s more than normal based on the past 15 years. I’ve been wondering if I should just shave my whole head and start over? Not in a midlife crisis sort of way, but just to start over with healthy hair and more vitamins. I was on FB reading posts in a mom group I’m in. This particular group is for moms who had babies in 2018. I read a post today that talked about stress and hair loss, and I thought…yes…I’m going through something similar. I’m losing hair every day, but I can’t even stop to deal with it, because honestly, I don’t want to deal with one.more.thing. I’d rather just ignore this thing and hope it goes away. -

New Dog
In late March in the height of quarantine my mom saw a breed of dog that she really liked, a mix of an English sheepdog and a poodle. So, 5 weeks later, we headed into the heart of Appalachia to retrieve our puppy, Annie. Now, while this is a generic story of a family getting a dog, the only reason we went ahead with this was because everyone in the family had significantly more free time on our hands, as a direct result of the pandemic. Her arrival caused a shift in everyones daily schedules, and shows an impact of the virus. This is important to me because it is my new dog. -

Camp Hansen COVID Update From the Camp Commander
This screenshot of a letter distributed to all Marine Corps and Navy personnel and their families aboard Camp Hansen in Okinawa details the service's priorities in the weeks ahead, as Marine Corps bases across the island do battle against a potentially deadly pathogen. Those priorities include preserving the Force, protecting the Marine Corps-Okinawa relationship, and "generate combat power" to deal with the COVID threat that struck Camp Hansen in July of 2020. -

Limited Reopenings on Okinawa
Following an outbreak on US Marine Corps facilities on Okinawa, the branch closed down most on-base community services in order to slow the virus's spread. On July 15, some installations cautiously re-opened a select few, although not all bases restored services immediately. Some services resumed with minimal staffing in place, while others only applied to unit training, while others offered a virtual alternative. However, this partial restoration was short-lived, when MCCS shut down the fitness centers the following day. -

Some Churches Open...And Others Stay Closed
Since the lock down, some churches in Kansas had filed lawsuits against the governor and her administration's orders to restrict large public gatherings and advocate social distancing. With those orders largely removed as a result of a compromise package agreed to by the governor and the GOP-led legislature, many churches reopened without restrictions of any kind. These photographs prove that the converse was also a reality, with other churches, like this one in west Wichita, opting to remain virtual, especially as the virus surged across the state in the summer of 2020. Without video conference and social media technology, such religious gatherings would have proved impossible. -

Katherine Schneider Oral History, 2020/05/20
The interviewee is an older blind person who discusses their experience with the pandemic lockdown in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. They discuss some of the challenges with living with blindness and continuing to work online and the non-inclusivity of other disabilities in teleworking and regular life during the pandemic. Additionally, they describe the challenges of being blind and trying to maintain social distance from people when you cannot see them. They also talk about how a good aspect of the pandemic is the sense of community and neighbors helping neighbors by checking in on people. Lastly, they talk about how they feel that people with disabilities are an afterthought during disasters and one way to remedy this is to have people from the disabled community on planning teams to help identify issues such as access to information and emergency planning. -

Soldiers doing land navigation during quarantine
This is a video of a training event my husband participated in.As you can see the soldiers are taking zero precautions to prevent the coronavirus. After this event 2 people in my husband's squad tested positive for the virus. While they are quarantined the rest of their company who all trained with them and interact in an intimate environment on a daily basis are still being sent to the field together without any testing. In addition to this one of the soldier's who tested positive had a roommate that they were going to force to quarantine with him even though the roommate did not have any systems and was told he could not get tested for coronavirus because he was already supposed to be quarantined. It was only due to my husband interfering and arguing with the chain of command that the decision was made that the two roommates would be quarantined separately.Had he not interfered they would have forced the roommates to quarantine together and essentially force the roommate to contract the virus. It is important to show the negligence of Fort Bragg in regards to protecting their soldiers from the Coronavirus. -

Rural Oklahoma Church Members Attend Online Services During COVID-19
Sharon and Dan Annesley of Blanchard, Oklahoma attend online services of New Beginnings Church. The Blanchard area church began offering Facebook Live streaming of their services starting 03/22/2020 and continued until 05/17/2020. Before March neither of them had ever attended an online church service, but it soon became a weekly routine during the COVID-19 restrictions. For nearly two months, Sharon and Dan attended the services each Sunday morning by driving to a local area for access to Wi-Fi and viewing on their laptop from the car. The photo captures the last time members Sharon and Dan attended online services before Oklahoma's COVID-19 restrictions were lifted for churches. Starting 05/24/2020, limited in-person services for New Beginnings Church reopened on 05/24/2020 as online streaming simultaneously will continue. -

Boris Johnson: Stayin' Alert
The video entails a spoof of the song 'Stayin' Alive' by the Bee Gees, changed to 'Stayin' Alert' to poke fun at the government Coronavirus briefing on 10/05/2020 where PM Boris Johnson addressed the public about how lockdown would change. The government's COVID-19 slogan changed from 'Stay home, protect the NHS, save lives' became 'Stay alert, control the virus, save lives'. The general reaction from the public was a negative one at the advent of this new slogan, prompting many spoof videos and memes to be released. The briefing that the new slogan was announced in was also considered by the public to be generally confusing, contradictory, and unhelpful. -

A haiku: "We isolate now / So when we gather again / No one is missing."
The very idea of staying home, wearing masks, etc. became politicized as some on the Right decided that stay-at-home orders and the like were undemocratic or authoritarian measures. This haiku encapsulates a kind, caring, non-politicized perspective on the reasons we are practicing self-isolation and social distancing as we are. -

“It really hasn't. I believe in God. I'm a Roman Catholic."
“It really hasn't. I believe in God. I'm a Roman Catholic. A lot of people are likening covid-19 to the book of Revelations which really it doesn't apply. What this has taught me as a person... I still believe in God as a result of this. My belief is even stronger. I don't think this is something that God has sent his wrath to kill the majority of people in the United States or that it's causing… It’s causing people a lot of anguish. I will say that because people have… as a society we have become so reliant on freedom. It really kind of has taken us a step back and if you want to look introspectively at yourself in your beliefs this is teaching everyone or it should be teaching everyone what’s important in your life.” -

“Well I feel like its strengthened my faith and my beliefs..."
“Well I feel like its strengthened my faith and my beliefs because we've learned through our readings of the Bible and our studying that the Bible speaks about the end times being similar to what we're facing now and also through this we’ve seen our local assembly... people draw closer to God through this. We've seen people get the Holy Ghost over the phone through this pandemic. We’ve seen a lot of people just really get closer to God during this so I feel like personally for me it's strengthened my faith and my belief in God and it's just shown me that when the Bible speaks of end times it's exactly what we're dealing with going on now.” -

“I would say I am by book Christian but for me I think I would consider myself having a stronger relationship with God rather than being committed to the religion of Christianity but yeah this pandemic has definitely risen the talk of God coming or the end. “It really hasn't affected my faith or beliefs in any way particular."
“It really hasn't affected my faith or beliefs in any way particular. I still am able to read my Bible and pray and do all the same things I would do at church just from my home. My beliefs haven't changed everything that I feel and believe has stayed the same especially with like Easter that just happened. We were still able to celebrate that holiday as a family although we weren't like all together and at church but the point of the holiday is our beliefs so essentially we were still able to celebrate that from home.” -

“I would not say that covid-19 has affected my faith or beliefs really in any noticeable way.” “Because of covid-19 my religious community has held gatherings virtually through Facebook live which has been mainly online services. I still participate regularly though obviously it's a little different with the online experience not being able to physically be there.” “My religious community has been providing service by having a blessing box which has food for anyone who needs some as well as making cards to send to elderly people who are currently more isolated than normal and lonely.” -

"In a lot of different ways that I couldn't name exhaustively..."
“In a lot of different ways that I couldn't name exhaustively but one of the ways I can think of now is that it's strengthened my conviction about God's peace and how it allows you to transcend things beyond understanding. Like, there's a passage Philippians 4 through 7 that says rejoice in the lord always again I say rejoice and it talks about letting your gentleness be evident and not being anxious about anything but by prayer and petition and with gratitude you present your requests to God and God's peace which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” -

“It hasn't really challenged my faith or my beliefs."
“It hasn't really challenged my faith or my beliefs. I think it's helped me lean on them more. It's definitely stretched it a little bit but in the sense of refocusing my faith in Jesus and just in this season allowing sometimes the difficult moments to refocus us and putting our focus on what we believe. So, it hasn't really changed it in a bad sense. It's actually strengthened it I believe.” -
