#NoJusticeNoPeace Murals Blanket Downtown Oakland
Local Bay Area artists are creating powerful social justice themed murals on the plywood used to board up Oakland businesses that were impacted in the chaos of the protests that began May 29, 2020 and are continuing over two weeks later. The art is capturing specific and unique elements of the current protests. One mural depicts a protestor wearing a mask as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Black Lives Matter and George Floyd are the subjects of many of the pieces. One large piece of art includes an image of Brianna Noble, who rode a horse during the May 29, 2020 protests. Another includes the names of victims of police brutality; visible are Oscar Grant, Sandra Bland and Breonna Taylor. Finally, one mural reads "Oakland Is Still Proud." -

How PRINT and Poster House Tackle COVID-19
"As the coronavirus pandemic reshapes huge swaths of society, the design world is responding with eye-catching visual messages of safety and gratitude. Because of this, there has been a huge surge of design activism." This article describes the increase of posters aiming to spread PSAs and messages of love and solidarity in NYC and was written by a senior journalism student following a beat developed and thought about in terms of the "local" in a journalism course at Pratt Institute that was upended by the pandemic. -

Movie Characters Quarantine Style
These screenshots were taken from a public Twitter account. The pictures are chalk drawings of Disney princesses and use lines that are similar to what was found in the original movies but replaced with quarantine items. I chose to contribute these because I think they'll be a great resource to use with middle school students in the future. Much like we use a lot of propaganda from WWII to teach students about life in the U.S. and Europe during WWII I would imagine these would be quite useful in explaining just how all-encompassing the COVID-19 pandemic is. -

Chalk Day
This photo is important to me because we are in quarantine and it feels like a lot of negativity and it's kind of a way to show that "the sun will always come out tomorrow" that something good will come out of this. (inspired by Tangled) -

What's on my mind?
What’s on your mind? Honestly always my homework and everything going on that's on social media. I'm always thinking “did I do this?, did I do that?” and always stressing about getting my homework handed in on time. I feel like school has been harder lately. I feel like I'm not really learning anything and I feel like everyone's more concerned about passing their classes than actually learning what's going on in the lesson. We’ve been getting a lot more homework then we usually do in my opinion. It's a little hard to keep up with all of the work but it's ok we have two weeks left until school is over so we won't be getting any work after these two weeks and we won't be getting too much since we are finishing up all of the lessons we’ve done. Moving on to social media. Everyone is talking about George floyed, a black man killed by a white cop by not being able to breathe because of the cop and saying he couldn't breathe numerous times and with people trying to help and say something about it the cop didn't listen. A few weeks ago before this event a man named Ahmaud Arbery was shot and killed by two white men for absolutely nothing that was that serious for him to have his life taken away. These two events make me feel absolutely disgusted and even feel embarrassed to be white. These events force other cultures to talk about how white people do this and that and it makes the white people who aren't racist feel embarrassed and disgusted and uncomfortable in their own skin. Racism in this world needs to be stopped. It's 2020! Why are we STILL being racist? Towards a human being who has a family and a life. We are being racist and treating them like crap for what? Their skin color? That's disgusting. Black people are now being ashamed to be who they are because of white people constantly hating and doing horrible things to them. Cops need to have boundaries. If the person they are trying to arrest is already handcuffed what are they holding him down for? Why did they have to stop his breathing? He was already handcuffed. The cops take advantage of their jobs and should have their limits as well as we do. I'm not saying every cop is like this but there's a lot that are racist and use their advantage of being a cop. That’s all. -

Stay Connected with Friends
During this quarantine, my friends and I felt sadden that we were not able to see each other day to day anymore. We missed the company and speaking to each other face to face again. In order to stay connected to made several Tik Tok's together to pass the time. It was so fun to see the final product and have fun together again. During this pandemic it is really hard to go without company. Even with my family there seems to be something missing and that is my friends. Friends are everything and you must stay in contact no matter what or friendships are going to be difficult to keep up with. -

Boarded up Bars in the Byward Market: the Aude Dubliner
Many establishments in the popular shopping, dining, and bar area of the Byward Market have boarded up their front windows with plywood to reduce the chance of robbery while they remain closed due to the pandemic and restrictions of gatherings. While some remain plain, or are painted black, other establishments chose to hire muralists to liven up the natural wood with images related to vibe of each bar. The Aude Dubliner Irish pub in the Market has some of its windows covered with murals depicting small items of significance for the pub in addition to plastered posters explaining the shut down. While there are more murals and posters around its corner, no photographs were taken out of respect for the homeless individuals taking advantage of the patio and overhang there as a place to sleep. -

Boarded up Bars in the Byward Market: The Heart and Crown Murals
Many establishments in the popular shopping, dining, and bar area of the Byward Market have boarded up their front windows with plywood to reduce the chance of robbery while they remain closed due to the pandemic and restrictions of gatherings. While some remain plain, or are painted black, other establishments chose to hire muralists to liven up the natural wood with images related to vibe of each bar. The well known Heart and Crown Irish pub in the Market has some of its windows covered with murals depicting small items of significance for the pub in addition to plastered posters explaining the shut down. Text on the murals reads "28 YEARS" (a reference to the pub's time in business) "HEART + CROWN" and "BACK SOON" followed by a small black heart. -

Boarded up Bars in the Byward Market: Chateau Lafayette ("The Laff")
Many establishments in the popular shopping, dining, and bar area of the Byward Market have boarded up their front windows with plywood to reduce the chance of robbery while they remain closed due to the pandemic and resulting restrictions of gatherings. While some remain plain, or are painted black, other establishments chose to hire muralists to liven up the natural wood with images related to vibe of each bar. The boards on the windows of the Chateau Lafayette, often called simply "the Laff" by locals, read "It's going to be OK./ We'll be back." A sentiment which at the beginning of the pandemic, in late March, was comforting but now seems overly optimist and distant. -

Chalk Art
This is some chalk art I created with my younger sister during the beginning of quarantine. Before we were stuck at home 24/7, I never would have thought to just go outside and color the driveway, or at least since I was 10 years old. Since the beginning of quarantine, I, and probably many others, have been seeking fun in lots of new ways. I personally have found myself turning to activities that I would typically do as a child. Although the pandemic has had quite the negative impact on the world, there is definitely some good that has come with it. I feel that many of us, including myself, have found ourselves outside in nature more than we had been before, as we are sort of forced to look for entertainment in different ways since we can’t be around many people at this time. When someone brings up the pandemic, it is usually something negative, so I thought this photo would represent one of the more positive aspects of quarantine. *Photograph of a drawing -

Smiles and Sidewalk Chalk
I saw that MMR was having a sidewalk contest and I wanted to enter something cool, so I started this project on April 15, 2020. My neighbors helped me a bit and when my project was about done, we were washing our hands out side and the water spilled all over my art and ruined it. The next day, I redid the entire project! And that day and it was just starting to get hot outside at the time, but all the work was worth it! I also wanted to make people walking by, smile and bring a little color into this quarentine! My Family and I also put bible verses around our sidewalk to give encouragement to everyone! What gave me the inspiration to do this chalk art? Well, I saw so many other people and kids posting and doing chalk art around their neighborhoods, and it made me want to be more creative! #chalkart #mmr -
