Ceci n'est pas une ecole
Parody of the famous Rene Magritte painting "The Treachery of Images (This is Not a Pipe)." During this crisis, many schools around the world have moved to an online-learning format. Most educators (and most students) say this is no substitute for in-person classes, however. There may be pressure once this is all over for online / distance learning to remain a prominent element of education, but many educators are pushing back against this. -

Oklahoma Rural Schools Publish Newspaper to Creatively Reach Students Through Distance Learning Requirements
The Oklahoma public schools in Dibble, Washington, and Lexington published five weekly newspapers that offered lessons for Pre-K through 12th grade students. This collaborative effort was organized by the three school district to offer distance learning while overcoming the lack of internet access to rural students. These papers were delivered for free to every student in each of the three school districts. Oklahoma public schools were ordered closed by Governor Stitt beginning March 25th and remained closed through the end of the school year. Dibble teacher Kelly McDaniel, a weekly contributor to the 2nd grade math and science section of the paper, provided the examples for the photograph. *Original text in "Creator" and "Contributor:" Clinton P. Goodbye, Spring 2020
By order of the governor, all Kansas K-12 schools closed for the remainder of the academic year to curb COVID-19's spread, making online classes a necessity and rendering normal spring-time activities, such as sports and commencements, an impossibility. This makeshift message on Wichita Northwest's campus expresses an all-too familiar sentiment that can be felt all across the country, from the East and West Coasts and in the nation's Heartland. -

History
When school number 22 was closed for the second time in my life, it was a shock for me. Imagine: one morning on March 14, I woke up and looked at the time "10:00 in the morning." Me: “What is happening? Why am I not at school? And my brother enters the room and asks me, as always: "Cho, have you been sleeping so long?" Am I so cho? Then mom comes and says: “Daughter, the school was quarantined again.” That day I did not know what this means (relatively recently, the school was quarantined, but only because of the flu in February). Then my family stayed at home for a month and a half ... then we all went outside, but for a while (half an hour) we walked a bit. we are sitting in the house again. You know, it’s scary, scary to realize that your life and the life of loved ones are in danger ((This is very, very scary. Constant threats to life. And yes, thanks to all the doctors, nurses and other people who are saving hundreds of lives right now ... -

Class of 2020 Car Processional
With the rest of the school year canceled at Sacramento’s McClatchy High School, the school staff is making sure that the class of 2020 doesn’t leave without fanfare. Students drove slowly through William Land Park, cars decorated and horns honking, as staff members dressed in the school’s red and white attire cheered and handed out signs for students to display in front of their homes. “These kids aren’t getting a ceremony, so we wanted to make sure we still celebrated them somehow. And it’s a chance for us to say goodbye since we won’t see them again at school. It’s so heartbreaking,” said a teacher. -

Living Through a Pandemic
It never occurred to me that a virus starting in Wuhan, China could create a significant impact in other countries far away. Nevertheless, here I am sitting in isolation, or as our government calls it "social distancing." Myself, and all the other college students have had to convert to online learning. Which has not been that bad, but there are some times where I have missed a class or two to gain more snooze time. Online school has made me realize how much I miss being in the physical classroom. The aspect of repetition every week kept my mental health stable. I as well as many others have also had to deal with heading back home to our parents. Just as I caught a glimpse of independence, I'm back under my mother's rule of "my house my rules." My mom works for DCFS (child protective services) and is considered an essential worker. She as well as many other essential workers are commonly face to face with the virus on the daily. Specifically, my mom has to evaluate houses in Aurora and Elgin, Illinois, where the virus is hitting Kane County the hardest. It's scary to know that someone in my family can be easily exposed to the virus. But I understand that she has to do her job and keep children safe, especially during a pandemic where she has told me, "people become crazier when they're stuck in their houses." In the first month of being back home, many arguments were had with my 22-year-old brother and mom, so I decided to move to my dad's house and have been here ever since. Many other families have experienced the same problems with communication and alone time as it is hard when you're stuck with one another for 24/7. -

Waiting to Return 2
When the school closed, it was unlike any other closing. Teachers left up the bulletin boards and projects were still hanging from the ceilings. Do we take down the maps and put away our figurines on our desk to keep from dust? When will we return? It's only March. The school year isn't over yet. A month later, the classrooms are still wondering. The teachers are still hoping. The students are still asking. The wishers are still wishing. The prayers are still praying. -

Teaching Without a License
With schools being closed down I have had to take up the job of teaching my younger brother. It all started with praying for a miracle that he would complete his school work. The miracle did not come quick enough for my mom and I had to step in and be the mediator. I felt like I was a counselor trying to persuade the both of them to talk out their feelings. Well, he is in his preadolescent years, so that ended in a failure. Finally, I presented my family with the miracle my mom had been asking for. The miracle was in a form of being rewarded with not taking his PlayStation away. Worried he would fail his P.E. class, my parents bought a trampoline. He used it for a few days... Next, was math. After some very low grades on math quizzes it was time to put my teaching classes into action. First, I had to convince him to start organizing his problems. That took a week and another low math score to convince him. Next, I had to persuade him to start writing his formulas with every problem. How was he going to score higher without knowing his formulas? He seems to have learned more, but this is much more difficult than expected. I am not looking forward to the final month of the school year. #REL101 -

Notes during Class 1
This image is apart of a series of screenshots taken during lessons via Microsoft Teams.Teaching my third graders from afar has become a challenge and a blessing at the same time. None of us knew of Mr. Microsoft Teams until we were forced to meet him. The way he impacts our lives is sometimes frustrating and other times satisfying. Unlike classroom noise, the chat that goes on during lessons are now mixed in with the lesson and available for all to participate- including the teacher! It's silent and said with caution and other times daring. (I've blurred the faces and redacted the names to protect the students' privacy.) -

Finished my first semester of grad school amid a global pandemic
Juggling grad school and a full time job hasn't been easy. The outbreak of Covid-19 made this a more difficult task, as I work at a school and teaching was shifted to an online format within a matter of days notice. It often feels that things have been moving so quickly that I haven't had time to fully comprehend them. Nonetheless, I must take note of some of the accomplishments along the way, such as finishing my first semester of grad school at Arizona State University. 10 monographs, some dozen scholarly papers, and two major papers I feel both relief and a sense of accomplishment. -

This Special Period
2020 is a special year. At the beginning of this year, a new coronavirus appeared in China. The virus quickly spread throughout China. At first, we thought it would be controlled soon, but we did not expect this to happen. As the time for the start of the school approached, the school also issued postponement of the start of school, and could not go out. We just took long classees at the computer. Although it is similar to the class at the school, but I still prefer to go back to class on campus so that I can play with my friends better. I hope this epidemic can pass quickly, come on! -

Feelings Of Being Quarantined
Being self isolated is pretty hard for me, but somehow I'm a natural at being self isolated. All I do now is just hangout in my own room. I do all of my classes through Zoom and I also do homework on my laptop as well. I also solve Rubik's cubes and play video games as well in my spare time. I'm really trying my best to avoid going outside until this virus dies out and I'm being very cautious on what I'm doing so I don't end up getting the virus. -

Our family home schooling schedule.
My son's school closed on Monday. He is a high energy kid and copes better when he knows what the day holds. So I devised a schedule for us where he can continue to learn whilst school is closed. We are finding that having a schedule is really helping with our daily life. It is meant to be flexible and serves more of a touchstone for when things get difficult throughout the day. Many people are saying that time in isolation is a great opportunity to learn an instrument or language, master a hobby or really relax - but those of us with children don't have that luxury. -
