Gardening During Quarantine
I, like most people, took up new hobbies to help pass the time. I built this raised garden from random pieces of wood laying around my backyard and even began to compost. I planted two tomato plants that have since grown very well and all of a sudden there were these plants growing from my compost. It's been nice having this small project to help pass the time. When I need a break from online school/work I come to my backyard and check up on it. It's essentially a source of calmness and relief in the world right now. -

Walking Through the Neighborhood Again
Prior to the pandemic, my friend and I would canvas neighborhoods for a local city council candidate here in Tempe. The election was held the week before the world shut down in March. Since then I haven’t done any canvassing. Local campaigns have adapted to the pandemic through no-contact lit dropping (and wearing a mask while doing it, of course). This is essentially just dropping off a flier at someones door with a candidates information on it. I used to take photos of the cool houses and things I would see when walking through the neighborhoods. This past weekend I stopped to take this photo in “The Lakes” neighborhood. -

The Train!
I've lived in my current residence for nearly a year and a half now. Since moving in, every night and sometimes throughout the day, I hear and feel the train moving past my house. The tracks are just behind the alley that backs up to my backyard. I spent a lot of time in my backyard, but until the pandemic took over I never actually saw the train. One night in October 2019, my friends and I sat in my backyard waiting for the train to come and it never did. I don't think I ever saw it because when it would come during the day I would be at either work or school and I would not spend too much time in my backyard at night. Now I see it all the time. I still remember seeing it pass for the first time and thinking "Wow! It's literally right there." Just another funny thing I would have never noticed. -

Watching Pre-March 2020 Movies and TV Shows
I’ve spoken with a few friends about this strange phenomenon I experience sometimes when watching movies or TV shows now. When watching a movie, when I see a large number of people in a room together without masks I get a short bout of anxiety. I immediately think, “What are all those people doing in a room together without masks on?” But then I remember that the movie I’m watching was filmed before March 2020. I’ve noticed my roommates do the same thing when we watch movies together. I distinctly remember this scene in “Gone Girl” where there are many people in a large room walking around and one of my roommates said, “Wow, look at all those people in a room together.” I think this shows that while many of us view the pandemic as a temporary moment in history and will “soon” be over— the pandemic has still embedded fears and anxieties in me that I would otherwise not think about. How I would approach normal things i.e. walking around in a grocery store or watching a movie, I now approach in a completely different way. I don’t think these fears or anxieties will last very long after the pandemic is over. It’s just interesting to see the ways both my friends and myself behave towards completely normal things pre-March 2020.
