Tweets from Inside a Prison 5/24-5/30/2020 by Railroaded Underground
These images show the tweets of an incarcerated person who is posting them by using a contraband cell phone to show the outside world how coronavirus is effecting their community inside the prison. This week he reacts to the murder of George Floyd by the police, asks us to imagine how badly people incarcerated are treated where there are no cameras if a man can be killed on camera, that the prison population is getting some satisfaction watching the public reaction to George's murder, notes that he saw (on tv presumably) a police office pull down the mask of a black man to pepper spray him, targeting, and discrimination. -

Local High school stands up for BLM and social injustice
We live in a small town. Our city of Moriarty NM has a population of about 1800 people, and the town next to us, Edgewood NM has close to 6100 people. This is a town that you can hide your true feelings because you're not around a lot of people, especially people of different backgrounds and nationalities. On June 6th, 2020 our local High school kids put together a peaceful protest to speak up against police brutality and racial injustice. They had been personally affected by this because they are of different nationalities, or are close friends with people who have been racially profiled before. They went through the proper channels, speaking with the local police department and securing a protest permit. When the Facebook page was created, it spread like wildfire, and the people who have hidden their hatred in this small town for so many years were now outraged at the thought. My daughter, Faith Ridenour was apart of the group setting up this protest. She and her friends were proud to speak out and we were proud of her for raising her voice but that pride turned into fear real quick when we started seeing the things our community members were saying about them on Facebook. A page called, "Torrance County Bulletin Board" posted the event and the comments were frightening, "Stand in my way and I will run you over" said one community member, and another chimed in with, "We will be there to clean up the mess after you take them down." I commented on every post I could to let them know that these are kids from our High school standing up for injustice. I begged people to remember that they're young and our next generation and we must lift them up and allow them to have voices or we are doomed as a society. I was immediately responded to with, "If you play with the big dogs, you will get hurt." Because of the hatred that was being spread online, my husband and I were in fear of our daughter's life and chose to stand out there with her. In one of the pictures, you will see our daughter standing with her sign, and my husband standing behind her to protect her. As a mother, it made me proud to see my daughter standing up for her fellow man, and my husband standing behind her to keep her safe. As an American, I was devastated at the idea that we have not grown from racism and are still against people who will stand up to it. As we arrived on the day of the protest we quickly saw the opposition. The picture attached only shows one of them with their automatic weapon, but the truth is, all of them were armed. As our kids shouted "Use your voice, black lives matter" the other side of the street shouted back, "All lives matter." Keeping in mind that this is all happening during the Covid-19 pandemic, our protestors wore masks to keep everyone safe, where the "All lives matter" group, did not. I found that to be pretty ironic. I am proud of these kids who stood up to adults. I am proud to know them and lift them up, and I believe our future will be better because of this generation. -

Sarah Grossman Killed by Teargas
This lovely lady was demonstrating in the recent protests. She was killed by the police's use of teargas on the crowd. One report said that she had asthma, but a later report said that she did not. I looked at her picture, and felt so sad for the loss of a beautiful soul. -

Black Lives Matter, but Flint still doesn't have clean water
I grew up in Michigan, and I still feel connected to the struggle residents in Flint face for clean drinking water, and in general the environmental health violations that get overlooked every day in the name of private interests. I saw this Tweet in my feed, and I'm not sure how to process it. Yes, Flint still doesn't have clean water and it's a problem, but for me this is another facet of the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Police reform & brutality are one component, yes- but the overarching umbrella of racism and the negligence of a healthy municipal water supply are connected to that fight. -

#NoJusticeNoPeace Murals Blanket Downtown Oakland
Local Bay Area artists are creating powerful social justice themed murals on the plywood used to board up Oakland businesses that were impacted in the chaos of the protests that began May 29, 2020 and are continuing over two weeks later. The art is capturing specific and unique elements of the current protests. One mural depicts a protestor wearing a mask as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Black Lives Matter and George Floyd are the subjects of many of the pieces. One large piece of art includes an image of Brianna Noble, who rode a horse during the May 29, 2020 protests. Another includes the names of victims of police brutality; visible are Oscar Grant, Sandra Bland and Breonna Taylor. Finally, one mural reads "Oakland Is Still Proud." -

The Golden Gate Bridge protest, that occured on June 6, 2020, was entirely organized and lead by two local East Bay youths. Tiana Day and Mimi Zoilia secured the permits that led to the first ever Black Lives Matter protest on the iconic San Francisco landmark. The outpouring of support for the pair has been strong. Social Issues
Public figure Trevor Noah compares the difference between breaking the law for people who look different by comparing a woman who continued to operate her salon during the shutdown. People praised her for her actions by calling her a "Freedom-loving American". But Trevor Noah is saying that if she had looked different she would have been called a criminal. Currently there is much social focus on the injustices within the legal, criminal and justice systems within America. There is an ongoing debate on what it means to have white-privilege, and what it means to be black in America. -

Protestors Block Golden Gate Bridge Traffic
The Golden Gate Bridge is perhaps the most iconic architectural landmark in the San Francisco Bay Area. As a resident of the area for the last 16 years, the Golden Gate Bridge holds a special place in my heart. On June 6, 2020, it was incredible to watch thousands of protesters fill the bridge to protest police brutality and racial injustices across the United States as a part of the larger protest movement that swept America in the aftermath of George Floyd's death. The crowd was so large they completely blocked traffic on one side of the bridge. The many images and videos taken of this moment beautifully preserve this historic moment. Many protesters marched masked as the protest occurred during strict COVID-19 shelter-in-place orders, however, many others chose not to do so. -

A tiger is on the loose in Oakland, California!
Amidst protests and COVID-19 shelter-in-place orders, Bay Area news sources reported that a tiger was on the loose in Oakland, California around 8:40 p.m. the night of May 31, 2020. The internet went wild as locals were on high alert for a tiger roaming the streets. By 8:52 p.m., the Oakland Zoo announced via Twitter that all of their tigers were accounted for. The Twitter-sphere went wild with humorous responses. My personal favorite response came from the Twitter account @Attorney@Law when they replied, "That's exactly what a tiger would say. Please confirm you are not a tiger." -

Serious Problems
During Covid-19, everyone is so stressed. Many people lost their jobs. It is a really frustrating time for many people. A more exasperating thing happened. A black man George Floyd died in Minneapolis, Minnesota because of excessive police enforcement. A white police officer had his knee on George's neck for over 10 minutes even if George completely followed his instructions and didn't do anything to resist. Everyone was very angry because of this unfair treatment. The protesters started a peaceful march in some cities. However, the conflict between the police and protestor becomes more serious. Some protestors express their anger by robbing the shop and destroying their cities because society contract doesn't consider them. They want the government to make changes through the fighting. The riots seeking justice and Covid-19 became the most serious problem in the US. -

The Impact on Normal People
This is a screenshot from a video which uploaded by a well-known blogger who lives in downtown, Los Angeles. Protests Erupt Across Bay Area
In the days following the death of George Floyd, the San Francisco Bay Area erupted with protests. San Jose and Oakland were two of the first cities in which large groups of protestors took to the streets. Peaceful protestors were met with police in riot gear and risked the threat of tear gas or arrest. Protests intensified as people moved to block local freeways, like Interstate 880 in Oakland. In the aftermath of the protests in San Jose and Oakland, protests spread across the entire Bay Area. Defying local COVID-19 shelter in place ordinances, nearly every city and town in the area held a protest during the week that followed. -

A New Perspective on "Child Looks Into Barrel of Rubber Bullet Gun During Protests in Long Beach, California"
Photographer, Richard Grant, captured a photo of a child sitting atop their father's shoulders during the Long Beach, California protests that followed George Floyd's death. It appears as if the cops in the photograph are pointing a rubber bullet gun directly at the father and child. The photographer recently posted the unedited photograph to Instagram and a caption stating that the photograph is not fake and that he does not believer the officer was intentionally or directly pointing the gun at the father and child. This statement by Richard Grant combats one of the reasons that perhaps the photograph went viral in the first place. Namely, that the officer was deliberately pointing the gun directly at the child. "First thing the photo is not fake. It is not Photoshopped. What I saw through the viewfinder is what is here. There was color correction and cropping so it could look better on Instagram when I posted it. I have stated before that I do not believe in the 1/500th of a second that the picture was made in that the officer was aiming at the man with the child. This is an uncropped photo with no color correction. I used a 24 -70mm lens at 70mm and f 3.5." Deliberate or not, the photograph reminds us to stop and think about the impact the events of 2020 are having on our children today and in the future. -

Black Lives Matter, pero pareces cholo
This image better describes some of the hypocrisy surrounding the social media support for #BlackLivesMatter. I'm glad that people in Peru are paying attention, but statements like "racism doesn't exist in Peru," belie the horrible truth. Racism is all around us whether in the U.S. or Peru. This meme in particular points out some of the controversial media images like La Paisana Jacinta that embody and make light of race and class differences. -

"The virus is racism"
Demonstrations against police violence have been taking place in Phoenix, AZ, as in many U.S. cities, following the May 25 killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. On the same day, Dion Johnson, also an African-American man, was fatally shot by police in North Phoenix. I took these photos at a peaceful march in support of Black lives on May 31. In keeping with public health guidance, almost all demonstrators wore protective masks to guard against spreading Covid19. But as one hand-lettered sign put it, "the virus is racism." -

#BlackOutTuesday on The Daily Smile
I've been listening to a lot of podcasts, so much so that I've ventured beyond my normal genres and entered into new ones. Podcasts help me pass the time, and provide a mental escape from a daily routine that has become so monotonous. Given COVID-19, one recent podcast I subscribed to is the Daily Smile hosted by Nikki Boyer. Today, there was no episode.
