March on Washington 57th Anniversary
On the 57th anniversary of the March on Washington, tens of thousands of people gathered to demand racial equality and an end to police brutality in the US. The rally was organized by Al Sharpton’s National Action Network, the NAACP and the National Urban League. The families of George Floyd, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and Jacob Blake, shared stories and called for systemic change. Organizers reminded attendees to practice social distancing and wear masks throughout the program. 1. Rev Al Sharpton speaking with an attendee 2. George Clinton cooling off before his performance 3. National Protests Against Police Violence
Minneapolis joined national protests against police violence and the lack of justice for those murdered or harmed by the police such as Daniel Prude, Breonna Taylor, and Miguel Vega. The national day of action was organized by the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, a group opposing the unjust treatment of individuals for their racial or political beliefs. They emerged from the Committee to Free Angela Davis, a group that successfully defended Angela Davis and helped her receive a not-guilty verdict from an all-white jury for kidnapping and first degree murder charges in 1972. -

This week, a grand jury indicted former Louisville Officer Brett Hankison on three counts of wanton endangerment for firing bullets that went into an apartment next to Breonna Taylor
This week, a grand jury indicted former Louisville Officer Brett Hankison on three counts of wanton endangerment for firing bullets that went into an apartment next to Breonna Taylor's during an attempted search of her home. The decision and Kentucky's Attorney General Daniel Cameron’s refusal to answer questions about the investigation is troubling. For instance, how could Hankison be charged with endangering Taylor’s neighbors but not with endangering Taylor herself? Was the grand jury even able to vote on whether the officers should be charged with homicide or was the judgement of self-defense determined by the Attorney General? -

Vote For Them
As the covid-19 pandemic began, many American’s found themselves glued to the news more than ever before. A result of this news consumption brought to light the atrocities committed against BIPOC in the United States. On March 13th, 2020, Breonna Taylor was fatally shot 6 times in her home by a plainclothes officer. Two months later, on May 25th, 2020, George Floyd was suffocated and killed during an arrest over a counterfeit $20 bill. Rightfully, many were outraged and so began protests in cities and towns across the United States. As the election drew closer a movement began to encourage voters to reflect on how their vote can impact historically marginalized individuals within their communities. What will the candidate you vote for do for the communities currently facing social justice issues at large? -

protect ourselves to protect each other
As the picture shows, even though we as a society are fighting a pandemic, we are also fighting inequality. Breonna Taylor deserves justice regardless of what's going on in the world. As you can see, protestors are staying safe with precautionary measures such as gloves, masks, etc. becuase they are not just combatting diseases or viruses; there prepared for police brutality. I would like to take my turn to salute my people for always striving for what's right and for going about it the right way. -

2020: A lifetime in a year... and we aren't even done yet...
2020 could have an entire history book unto itself. So much has happened this year... Obviously, the big stories everyone is familiar with; BLM protests, Covid19, Wildfires literally EVERYWHERE, but what about the smaller, but just as important stories that get overshadowed? For example, on Feb 6th, Christina Koch, a NASA astronaut, returned to Earth after 328 days in space, the most days completed by any woman ever, and I bet you don't even remember hearing about it. Thats why I though this time line would be a good addition to the archive. It helps put the events of the year (as of July 4th) in an easy to read format to help us all remember everything that happened this year. Hopefully, the back half of the year is much less eventful, but I doubt it. -

Democracy in Action- The Fight for Racial Justice During The Pandemic
I took this picture on June 1st, 2020, on the first day I left my house since March. The COVID-19 Pandemic was still raging outside, but I felt that it was worth the risk to fight for racial justice. Thousands took the streets after the murder of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor to demand change and an end to systemic racism. My friends and I were some of them. We rallied outside the State House, only steps away from the dorm that I will be living in two weeks from now. Surprisingly, the protests gave me a strange sense of hope for our country. Despite the risk of COVID-19, all these people still collectively decided that this was too important to miss. They were willing to risk their safety to demand justice for people they had never even met. I’ve been to protests before, but this was like no other. It showed that people truly care about each other. Because of this, I believe that the US will come out of this pandemic stronger than before. -

COVID Cant Stop Us
COVID-19 has affected the entire world and continues to create a separation between humanity as we are confined into our homes and spaces the exist 6ft away from human contact. But this pandemic did not bring the demise to the inhumane, inequal, racist treatment that people face daily. You would think that in a time of need that people would band together and rise above such actions. But, the pandemic did not stop us from using our voices to fight for Black lives and justice for all people in America. As people pooled together to rise above racism and inequality. The collection of pictures, in this post, is so intriguing as you can still see everyone at these protests maintaining a distance of 6 feet and wearing masks to protect others. It seems so powerful that through all the hate and social injustice that everyone could mass together to show care and love back into the world. These images are so important to the history of COVID as it shows how much it impacted the people in these images, but didn't stop an even GREATER movement in history. -

Golden State Warriors Protest
During the recent protests sweeping the Bay Area, Warrior's basketball players Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson joined a protest led by fellow teammate, and native of Oakland, Juan Toscano-Anderson. Toscano-Anderson's "Unity March" took place at Lake Merritt in Oakland. Peaceful protestors chanted George Floyd and Breonna Taylor's names as they walked around the lake. Curry and Thompson are beloved leaders throughout the Bay Area. Their decision to publicly participate in the protests showed their depth of character and further demonstrates their unwavering commitment to their local communities. -

Breonna Taylor Protests
This image shows people protesting after the death of Breonna Taylor after she was killed by police in a no-knock raid in March 13, 2020. This is a distinctly Covid-19 era image, as the protesters have violated social distancing to assemble and are all wearing masks.
