They said we were heroes but they treated us like villains
My experience with the covid 19 pandemic was very different from a lot of people’s. Instead of staying home and not going outside, I had to work. I wasn’t a nurse or doctor or even a service industry employee. I did work in health care but registration. I also didn’t work at an ER or hospital. I worked at an urgent care that didn’t treat covid but did test for it. This urgent care was also in the middle of Los Angeles, California. I was doing patient registration in Los Angeles, California, at the peak of the pandemic when one in every three people had covid. Since we were so understaffed and overworked, I easily worked about 60 hours every week for almost a year. Now I’ve worked many jobs throughout my adult life. These include retail during Christmas, a theme park during summer and Halloween haunts, and the graveyard shift at a casino. Out of all those, the worst people and treatment I encountered were from the patients who wanted to be tested for covid 19 when we ran out of tests. We were a private company, and Los Angeles had multiple free test sites available to anyone in the LA area. You didn’t have to even to be a resident or have insurance. But none of that mattered; they were there and wanted to be tested. Even though it was 9 o’clock at night and we ran out of tests over four hours ago. I know I’ll always be able to find an administration or clerical job in health care. I have over ten years of experience in that field. But, after what I went through during covid, I don’t think I will ever work in health care again. Every time someone says health care works are heroes, all I can think is, they have a funny way of showing it. -

COVID-19 Testing At Home
Pictured are 3 at-home COVID-19 tests. These tests were given, free of charge, to school personnel at a middle school outside Houston, Texas. Each staff member received 3 tests with the hope that sick personnel would test themselves at home before coming to work with symptoms. The test is a nasal swab test which requires a smartphone app to retrieve results. It was noted by this school district that a medical professional confirmatory test would be required after a positive at-home result. -

Waiting in Limbo
Going into the weekend of the fourth of July; my roommates and I were notified of our exposure to covid-19. It came as a shock to us as for the most part we had been good at keeping away from situations that would expose us. After some deducing of how we were exposed we came to find out that one of our roommate’s girlfriend was our source. We decided to go and get tested in order to make sure we could participate in whatever fourth of July events we had scheduled. With the four of us packed into a car, we drove down to the nearest testing center. After waiting for what seemed like hours, we were able to get tests. What seemed like it would be a miserable experience of having something shoved up our noses turned out to be alright. A few days later we received calls informing us of our results. My test came back positive along with three of my roommates. However, hours later I was informed that my test was actually inconclusive and I should come get retested. So the next day I got up and drove myself over to the testing center. After waiting for an hour I was informed that I actually could not get tested for another 10 days due to my recent test. With this knowledge I had the pleasure of waiting out the week in quarantine, unsure of my exposure. The days went by long and slow stuck in a white room for 23 of the 24 hours in a day. My only real entertainment for the days being my PlayStation and my computer, and my only food being the simple groceries delivered to my house via amazon. Mostly peanut butter and jelly. After my 7 days were up I would drive to the nearest testing location to get tested. Except, that location was out of tests. I would spend the next 2 hours going to each location finding out the same thing, they were out of tests. The next 5 days would be spent doing much the same. Eventually, I would find a location and receive my test. After 2 more days I would find out my results: Negative. Having already spent more than my required quarantine time I would not know if I truly was positive in the early days. However, I don’t regret the time spent in self-quarantine in order to potentially protect others. -

Cultural Survival: disaggregation of data of, for, and by Indigenous Peoples
"Due to the need to present information disaggregated by Indigenous Peoples, Cultural Survival is producing this map to collect and disseminate information to show the situations Indigenous communities are facing as a result of COVID-19. As the number of cases increase daily, and the lack of access to testing in rural areas, the data presented here will evolve over time. Empty areas do not imply that there are no cases of COVID-19 or human right violations. This is a continuous and not exhaustive effort and we invite Indigenous Peoples and their communities to contribute. [...] Our COVID-19 response features a holistic, multi-layered approach including curating a global monitoring system for COVID-19 for Indigenous communities using Google maps technology to document COVID-19 cases and related human rights violations." -

How covid affected me
I was driving back from Mammoth when my mom got the email that someone in my church that we see every week got covid. I immediately got worried because I was spending time with them at church. After we got that email, we realized that we had to be more aware of how close the virus was to home. We all got tests the next day and panicked until we got the results that we were all negative. This experience was very stressful and I do not think I want to relive that feeling. -

All is Lost
I was an associate editor for our student magazine "The Lakelander" at Lakeland Community College. I became infected by Covid-19 on March 23, 2020, two months before I was to graduate with honors from the school. Our student staff gathered on-line to talk about our final magazine for the school year and we asked everyone to write about their experience with the pandemic. This was my submission. The Lakelander is print only, so it is unclear when or if these stories will be published. -

Chiefs of Ontario Says COVID-19 Spike is Coming, Urges First Nations to Keep Communities Closed
“The Chiefs of Ontario (COO) is urging First Nations across the province to keep communities closed as officials expect a spike in COVID-19 cases over the weekend and the rest of May. The COO, which represents 133 First Nations in Ontario, says higher rates of testing is showing more positive tests for the virus that has ravished parts of the province – especially in long term care facilities. ‘These spikes will happen Mother’s Day and they will again happen on the long weekend, the May long weekend,’ said Assembly of First Nations Ontario Regional Chief RoseAnne Archibald. ‘Two weeks after that you’ll see another spike in cases increasing in Ontario.’” #IndigenousStories -

Not a Testing Site
In March 2020, Target, in tandem with other major retailers, announced that their company would assist in efforts to expand COVID-19 testing. This sign posted on the entrance to a west Wichita, Kansas, Target store makes it clear to customers that this particular site was not one of those facilities. Taken on April 3, this photo reflects the painstakingly slow expansion of the country's testing capabilities. -

Analei _________, my best friend 03/12/2019 imagine was taken
These photographs explain how someone can be taken from you so fast, as I said earlier Analei did not pass, she is very fortunate because of how many people have been losing their lives due to COVID-19. When I heard the news I freaked out I called her mother and asked her if she was okay, the crazy part is she thinks she got it at a party she went to which what’s weird is that I went to it as well, I was fine and she wasn’t, I personally felt guilty and I was really sad for days and made sure she was okay, since so many people have been getting tested for corona virus the government were very low on test, which meant she had to wait and thankfully found out it was certainly positive, a week has gone by and she was starting to get better, I was so glad. The second photograph is a picture of a doctor, and this shows how every nurse, and doctors have risked their lives for us every day and you start to really see who’s the hero. *The primarily responsible for making this resource would be me, Sofia __________ I am coming to everyone as a human to make sure everyone is safe and healthy *In this time, March 2019 was the month of our graduation into becoming adults and into college students ready for a life, I put a photograph of my friend Analei who was recently tested positive for COVID-19, she is a amazing person and usually most of the bad luck always comes to her for some reason. *Analei _________ and Sofia __________ also her mom ___________ ____________ *The genre of this resource is to show how someone can be taken from you so easily, (even though Analei did not pass) we all had a bit of a scare when we heard the news, her mom took this picture of her as a graduation announcement, little did we know this would happen in our world. -
