State expands access to COVID-19 vaccinations in rural areas
In Tennessee, the state has announced new partnerships with rural pharmacies to more effectively reach the elderly outside of urban areas. This particular article focuses on East Tennessee and the rural counties surrounding the Knoxville metropolitan area. This is great news to those who do not live in cities as Tennessee is a mostly rural state. For some elderly people, they would potentially have to drive two hours to get to the city to get a vaccine. However, because of this new partnership, it will make it far easier for those in rural areas to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. -

Getting a COVID-19 Vaccine
My name is Delanie Cencelewski, I am 20, I live in Kingman, Arizona and I work for a private fiduciary office and deal with a lot of elderly clients. Before getting my vaccine, I really was not nervous at all and did not really feel any particular way about it. When I received the vaccine, I was in Bullhead City, Arizona at a local pharmacy called DeeFLat Pharmacy with one of my coworkers. It was only two people in the pharmacy, one administering the vaccine and one working the counter. The lady asked for my I.D. and insurance card, then I sat in a chair and got the shot. I had to wait in the pharmacy for 15 minutes so they could monitor me and make sure there were no symptoms. I am not sure which vaccine I received. I felt fine getting the vaccine, it did not hurt at all and was pretty quick. Later that day, I developed pain in the area of my right arm where I got the shot and a headache and fatigue, but other than that I was fine. I got the shot on Saturday, 1/16/2021, and am still experiencing fatigue and pain in the arm. I got the vaccine partly due to work because I come into contact with many elderly people in my community and because I have diabetes, so I fall into the 1b category for the vaccinations in Arizona. -

Working in Health Care During a Pandemic
Back in March when we all went into quarantine as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak, I immediately got a call from work saying that they needed people to work because the elder staff had called out. I work as a Pharmacy Technician at a family-owned local pharmacy called Keyes Drug. I have been working here for almost four years, but at the time I had stopped because of living in the city at my college dorm. Once we got sent home, it was all the more reason to step up and work. So I started working at the pharmacy again almost full time every day when this craziness was going on. I got used to the routine of cleansing and wearing a mask, and the life of an essential worker during a pandemic. It was an absolute nightmare. We had no staff and I had to manage three people’s jobs. People were rude and angry all the time, but it wasn’t surprising considering they were stuck at home for weeks that would turn into months. I wasn’t able to take breaks most days, which caused me to lose a lot of weight in 3-4 months. At the end of the day, I knew I was doing service for the people of my community by providing them with medical care and their prescriptions. On the bright side, I was making money while my mom was unemployed, so I was able to help out a little. In times like these, we young people have to step up and take responsibility when the elderly can’t. -

The Year(s) of COVID
I did not expect 2020 to turn out this way, I had a year of travels planned and a summer of adventures. I remember telling patients at the pharmacy I work at that things will be fine, we just need to a little cautious but I was wrong, it seemed almost routine that we started getting phone calls informing us a patient passed away. Scrolling through any platform, I would come across a familiar face that is now gone. It became numbing when I found myself rubbing my skin raw in the shower after working 10 hour shifts, the mask tan was humorous at first now it is a little saddening this is the reality. I remember watching the news in April with my family and going "wow only 700 people died today" and wondered if that was the new reality. Sometimes all of this feels so surreal, is it really happening? I want to remain optimistic but it seems almost impossible when things never seem to get any better. This is our new normal, life before COVID will never return. -

Conversation with my pharmacy friend
My friend is a pharmacy student in Nashville and was shocked at how students were being treated by employers and professors. She was also shocked by the news and information being presented to clients. This exchange explains why so much disinformation spread as this started. This is Part 2 of our conversation. #NortheasternJOTPY -

Luke AFB Prescription Pickup Line
This is the wait line for prescription pickup at the Luke AFB Pharmacy. The total wait time estimated around 40 minutes in the sun on a day where the temperature was above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. This line was created by the pharmacy to account for six feet social distancing with people in their cars to prevent the possible spread of COVID-19. -

Walgreens Prescribes “Social Distancing”
As the COVID-19 spreads across the world, essential businesses such as grocery stores and pharmacies take precautionary measures. Following the guidelines issued by the CDC, businesses such as Walgreens request that while in (and out of) their pharmacy, customers distance themselves by at least 6 feet. Inside the pharmacy, customers distance themselves physically and socially, exchanging looks from 6 feet away that seem to say, “you are too close to me.” Tape across the floor dictates the CDC’s guidelines of what is too close. Novelist George Orwell’s writings come to mind, whose literature warns of dystopian societies. The entire Walgreens experience, from walking in, to shopping, to walking out, reminds customers of the often asymptomatic virus that anyone could have. #DePaulHST391 -

Social Distancing at Walgreens in Chicago’s Southwest Suburbs
Although many businesses have closed their doors due to COVID-19, pharmacies have kept theirs open. Essential workers, like pharmacists, store leadership, pharmacy technicians, and customer service representatives, have continued to work for their communities despite the potential risks to their health. As a part-time pharmacy technician, it is difficult to social distance while at work, as my job relies on interacting with my coworkers and numerous patients throughout the day. This sign serves to remind its viewer that even small errands during a global pandemic, such as picking up medications, may present a preventable health threat to all parties involved. *Walgreens Corporate; notice distributed to individual stores *04/08/2020; Posted in the pharmacy queue during Illinois’ Shelter in Place #DePaulHST391 -

CVS Social Distancing Reminder
This image shows a sign that reminds customers to engage in social distancing in accordance with recommendations by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO). The sign was located on a small display next to the registers and was one of many. These signs highlight the importance of social distancing but also the necessity of reminding people to engage in the practice as it is not a common practice. -

The social distancing line
The Australian Government has recommended social distancing of at least 1.5 metres. This pharmacist has taped a line on the ground in front of their counters — it makes trying to reach forward to pay for goods a bit like a fairground game of "tap the card reader with your bankcard". -

Sign in pharmacy, 11th arrondissement, Paris, France
In the week before I took this photograph, most pharmacies in Paris had handwritten signs in their windows explaining they were out of masks and antibacterial/alcohol gel. This one adds a welcome note of levity. A few hours after I took the picture, France shut all cafes, bars and non-essential shops for the foreseeable future. The pharmacy will, of course, remain open.
