Sarah Uhlig Oral History, 2020/03/14
During this interview, I am talking with my classmate Sarah Uhlig about our experience in the program of Empower: Ecuador, since we were both on it together. The main purpose of this interview was to get an insight into what it was for another student like me, to have missed a trip to Ecuador due to COVID-19. Just to clarify, this was not any trip. This was a missionary trip for which we were preparing ourselves to go for most of the semester. As the trip was canceled, we recognized that the program was much more than just traveling to Ecuador. Rather, the program was about our personal lives and the way in which we relate to others around us that are in different seasons and circumstances in life. Another very important thing, was self-reflection into how we were utilizing our gifts and field of interest to not only serve others but be present with others. Many things were learned from this course and Sarah, will be sharing with you her experience despite the challenges and messiness that COVID-19 brought. -

“I would say that it hasn't affected my faith or beliefs in any kind of..."
“I would say that it hasn't affected my faith or beliefs in any kind of drastic way. I've always grown up going to church and I still feel the same about my church and about my religious beliefs and God and I don't think that this pandemic was something sent by God to smite us or that we are being ignored by any kind of higher being or something for this happening. I think that just stuff happens and you know faith and science are two separate things.” -

“It really hasn't. I believe in God. I'm a Roman Catholic."
“It really hasn't. I believe in God. I'm a Roman Catholic. A lot of people are likening covid-19 to the book of Revelations which really it doesn't apply. What this has taught me as a person... I still believe in God as a result of this. My belief is even stronger. I don't think this is something that God has sent his wrath to kill the majority of people in the United States or that it's causing… It’s causing people a lot of anguish. I will say that because people have… as a society we have become so reliant on freedom. It really kind of has taken us a step back and if you want to look introspectively at yourself in your beliefs this is teaching everyone or it should be teaching everyone what’s important in your life.” -

“Well I feel like its strengthened my faith and my beliefs..."
“Well I feel like its strengthened my faith and my beliefs because we've learned through our readings of the Bible and our studying that the Bible speaks about the end times being similar to what we're facing now and also through this we’ve seen our local assembly... people draw closer to God through this. We've seen people get the Holy Ghost over the phone through this pandemic. We’ve seen a lot of people just really get closer to God during this so I feel like personally for me it's strengthened my faith and my belief in God and it's just shown me that when the Bible speaks of end times it's exactly what we're dealing with going on now.” -

“I would say I am by book Christian..."
“I would say I am by book Christian but for me I think I would consider myself having a stronger relationship with God rather than being committed to the religion of Christianity but yeah this pandemic has definitely risen the talk of God coming or the end. This stuff kind of tends to usually freak people out but I've done or at least attempted to become more prepared for his coming spiritually.” -

“I dunno. It's certainly helped me turn to reassuring scriptures..."
“I dunno. It's certainly helped me turn to reassuring scriptures to go back into how you connect with God and how God is with us all the time. So you're relying more on that providence of God that presence of God knowing that things are out of our control yet God is still there God is still in charge so I dunno know that's kind of what it's done for me.” -

“You know... I've kind of given that a lot of thought..."
“You know... I've kind of given that a lot of thought just because so many people so many programs I've been watching people are saying like this is a punishment or that God is trying to say something and I actually don't feel like it's impacted my faith because I've already had so much happened to me in my past with the death of my children so this is just another glitch in life I guess.” -

“I think it has strengthened my faith actually."
“I think it has strengthened my faith actually. I don't know what all this means and I don't necessarily believe it's God sent or anything like that but I definitely feel like it's god allowed like he's allowed this thing to happen for some reason and so whether it's to get our attention or to… I don't know. I don't know but I feel like there's almost like a forced stillness and I think in this forced stillness it'd be wise to take advantage of that time and really strengthen things.” -

"In a lot of different ways that I couldn't name exhaustively..."
“In a lot of different ways that I couldn't name exhaustively but one of the ways I can think of now is that it's strengthened my conviction about God's peace and how it allows you to transcend things beyond understanding. Like, there's a passage Philippians 4 through 7 that says rejoice in the lord always again I say rejoice and it talks about letting your gentleness be evident and not being anxious about anything but by prayer and petition and with gratitude you present your requests to God and God's peace which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” -

“You know when you first asked that question..."
“You know when you first asked that question or when you sent it to me to look at. I really had not even thought about the question because to me it didn't affect anything with my faith or my beliefs. Yeah, it's like from my perspective we're talking two different things. It would be like blaming my neighbor for something that someone else far away had done and I just can't do that. I can't put blame or change the way I believe about God or about mankind or people based off something someone else has done.” -

“So I would say my general theology and philosophy are not particularly affected..."
“So I would say my general theology and philosophy are not particularly affected one way or the other because I realize that these sorts of things happen in history and that they are part of earthly life. They are part of the kind of difficulties that afflict the human race…”
