How the pandemic brought together friendships
Pre-pandemic I had a strong, close-nit group of friends who we frequently made time to spend together whether it was a get together dinner, lunch or breakfast once a month, going to concerts, festivals, wine night or "just hanging out". Once the pandemic hit and we were on lock down we could no longer get together obviously. I was single at the time and has a very strong bond with all my girlfriends. Not being able to see them and interact mad me feel sad, sometimes lonely and some days depressed. When I reached out to my friends I discovered that they were having the same feelings. From that moment on we decided to have a virtual girls night/wine night once a week to stay connected. For many months once a week we video chatted while drinking our wine. Even though we could not physically be there with each other, it was the next best thing. For me, just being able to see their faces made so much of a difference. I felt very isolated during the pandemic and it definitely made me feel happier, less lonely and have something to look forward too especially because at the time I barely left my house. For some the pandemic caused people to lose relationships and become distant, but for me my bond with my girlfriends became stronger which I am thankful for. -

Rolling with the pandemic
This year, I completed an intensive subject called Wines of the World at university. It was postponed many times due to restrictions, and the subject coordinators eventually decided that they would have to host the course entirely online. A key component of the subject was wine tasting, and this photo shows how this was made possible at home. Wine tastings in sous vide bags were posted to each student's house, a quite exciting and novel experience. This photo thus reflects how educators have had to be flexible around restrictions, and come up with new ways to facilitate learning. -

Pro or Con?
This meme honestly describes how peoples quarantine was like. The meme shows someone "exposing" someone of drinking a lot of wine. Which makes me wonder if it was a good thing that people were able to spend more time at home or was it more of a bad thing. My quarantine was similar to this meme, in the sense that I had no motivation to do anything but watch tv all day and eat bad food. -

"The Coronavirus Is Bringing Back Florence’s Wine Windows" - Atlas Obscura
The COVID-19 pandemic, aside from encouraging people to take up new hobbies, has encouraged people to look to the past for methods of dealing with the risks of the pandemic. In an article for Atlas Obscura, journalist Matthew Taub looks at how the people of Florence, Italy, have dealt with the new reality of COVID-19 by using a medieval innovation: wine windows. According to Taub, a wine window, or buchette del vino, is a type of medieval storefront common in Florence that dates back to the 17th century, when the plague commonly ravaged the population of the city. Insteading of risking exposure by entering an osteria, or bar, Florentines eager for wine and merriment were passed wine through a narrow window by metal plate. Shopkeepers would then sanitize the metal plates used to transfer money and products with vinegar. Over 200 wine windows have been tallied, or 1 for every city block. With the arrival of COVID-19, 5-6 restaurants in Florence have reactivated their wine windows to serve wine, as well as coffee and gelato. Aside from providing modern Florentine shoppers with safe access to red wine, these reopened wine windows are also raising awareness about Florence's medieval past and the necessity of preserving antique architecture. -

A Thriving Glass Factory, Melbourne
The glass factory is in the middle of Spotswood, a suburb close to central Melbourne. The factory produces glass containers for many products including baby food, vegemite, beer, wine, jam, and kombucha. They have been very busy this year, thanks to panic buying. One staff member stated that production had been high since March 2020, just like it was in Christmas 2019, the peak season for glass production. Glass bottles are made around Australia as they are quite difficult to transport, so they cannot be outsourced to overseas manufacturers. This facility has around 100 staff. In these images you can see some staff having a break out the front of the business. They are wearing masks in accordance with Victorian (state) laws. In the other image you can also see that the workplace is taking temperature checks to reduce the risk of virus transmission. 37°49'49.5"S 144°53'30.5"E HIST30060 -

Medieval ‘wine windows’ are reopening, reviving Italian plague tradition
When the bubonic plague or black death went through Europe small windows, just big enough for a glass of wine to be passed through, were used. People in Italy today are using them again in light of the Coronavirus Pandemic. -

Quarantine Roller Coaster Created at Home
People are quite bored being stuck at home month after month. This person created a roller coaster by holding a wine corkscrew up to a video of roller coaster tracks. The arms used to open the wine bottle, flew up on the downhills. People are so creative! -

Alberta's 'Wine Ninjas' Are Grown Women Playing Boozy Ding Dong Ditch
A news article about a group of women in Western Canada who started a group, which then became a trend, where they dress up in costume and deliver wine and other treats to unsuspecting residents who may need a pick-me-up. The game 'Ding Dong Ditch' as referenced in the title is one where people, usually children or teenagers, ring a doorbell and then run away and hide as a joke. In this case they are brightening up people's days while avoiding physical interaction which could spread the virus. -

Cellar Door Wine Bar
This image is one that has been shared by a bar in the Chicago suburbs, showing thanks to people for supporting small business. I find it interesting because the business does not know that the reader of this sign has in fact supported small, local businesses. Instead, it reads like when your mom says “thanks for unloading the dishwasher” as a way of asking you to unload the dishwasher. #DePaulHST391 -

two friends and a balcony
A photo has been taken in Italy of two neighbors sharing a bottle of wine on their balconies. They put a piece of wood between the space that divides the two balconies as a table. This shows how some people find company and in the same time respect social distancing.
