Sweet Treats
My friend Maddie sent me this selfie of her getting some churros during quarantine. We used to always go get churro's together but many places have been closed. She found a food truck that sells churro's and she decided to go get it as it requires minimal contact with people and allows for social distancing! Like me, she uses food (specifically sweets) to help with stress and anxiety! She described the change during COVID, "Before COVID one of my coping mechanisms for when I’m stressed was to go get something sweet to eat. But I had to adjust that, and now I get something sweet to-go and sit in my car while I listen to music." -

Virtual Talent Show
The whole summer I had this looming inexplicable fear that time was running out, and I guess that was really embodied by my job search. I feel like I applied at every fast food place on the westside of Albuquerque and the south side of Rio Rancho and I had gotten a call back from only a few. All in all I got 5 interviews from different places and none of them were for jobs I ended up getting. This was because there were so many downsized companies and competition for the jobs that they had. I was driven to madness by the midpoint of the summer and I felt like because the summer was halfway over that I was running out of time. By the end of the summer I didn’t start working until the weekend after the second week of school at Sonic. -

Pets and their effect during the pandemic
During the pandemic, to help deal with the new stresses my family decided to adopt a cat from a family friend. This animal actually helped to relieve some of the newfound issues that quarantine has brought on (fear, loneliness, etc.) . I feel this photograph is important because it shows a valuable tool that can help people to better make it through quarantine. It also helps to showcase the struggle I am going through in quarantine and what has helped to keep me going. -

COVID IS FAKE!!!!!!!!
so it all started when Bill Gates met the lizard people when facebook stared poping off. Mark Zuckerberg formed a plan to hand the human race over to the lizard people. This of course was a long term plan since the needed 5g technology wasn't around yet. Fast forward to 2019 and 5g starts to roll out as more towers are built and then 2020 come around and they try and convince us theres a virus and we should wear masks. Do you think a mask can save you from 5g? NO!! once the 5g mind control takes over Bill Gates will take over as the human representative for the lizard people. "covid 19" is slowly turning us over to the lizard people as we flawk to hospitals where they place microchips in the back of necks. Before you know it there will be lizard money everywhere and human life as you know it never be the same. -

Grateful!
I selected this picture to represent my experience of Covid-19 and 2020. It's a graduation photo that defines an accomplishment and my journey. I've learned the concept when beginning an adventure, I will have to continue. But as I approach the finish line, I might have to finish alone. The pandemic has opened doors of opportunities not only financially, but spiritually. God has shown me in so many ways that he's here to care for me and supply my needs. Though Covid-19 has been a raging storm in our lives, I've realized that I appreciate life much more. -

Pets Have Conference about Owners Being Home all Day
The New Yorker has been consistantly running their famous cartoons. The recent ones have dealt with the issues we are facing now with coronavirus: quarantine, business closures, home schooling, remote working, etc. This one shows the local pets having a meeting about the quarantine situation. The dogs are pleased, but the cats are not and they ask why their "department" wasn't consulted before the owners stayed home all day. -

Pandemic Panic
The pandemic is a struggle for everyone, and [it's] also hard for me who also lost income sources. As much I can, I take photos whenever I go out to buy supplies. I also felt the frustration of government processes with long lines and unnecessary procedures. But at the end of the day, I am relieved to always come home which I can always feel secure. -

Rising Coronavirus Concerns in Arizona
@45isalier Retweeted an Arizona ER Physician describing the increases that are occurring in hospital bed usage in the state. It shows a worrying increase over the past several days as the state continues to reopen. Coming from someone who works in the ER and deals with the real effects of the coronavirus, it seems as though This item was added with TAGS v6.1.9.1. The initial search was made using #Arizona and this item was added to the collection because of its medical importance and contradicts the narrative that reopening now is appropriate. -

A Carrier's Plight with COVID-19
This screenshot shows a Navy medical technician conducting a COVID test in front of what appears to be the docked USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71). Forced to make an emergency disembarkation at Naval Base Guam in the early days of the pandemic, the ship found itself ravaged by the virus, which swept through its departments and corridors with alarming speed, prompting its commander, Captain Brett Crozier, to order the crew off the warship; an action that combined with a pointed (and public) memo to superiors that ultimately lead to his dismissal. -

Doctors and Protests
In the middle of a national public health crisis, a national racial crisis also occurred. As doctors and healthcare workers around the world work to save people, protests and large social gatherings seem as though they would be a new nightmare. Instead, numerous healthcare professionals have come out in support of the protests; they highlight that racism, just like coronavirus, is as huge national health issue. It is a discussion that highlights just how important it is to get it right in solving racism and addressing the systemic issues that plague this country. -

Molly's Quarantine Performance
Centerville, Utah (June, 2020)- My daughter is a creative soul; she loves to sing, dance and act out her vivid imagination. She loves the theatre and going to summer camp. COVID-19 stopped her from doing that this year. But Molly is resourceful and resilient, and even found opportunity to perform in her Anna costume for all her family at her own birthday party. The arts have a way of making us whole, filling us up with joy and hope; even in the midst of a pandemic. For the little ones, they always find a way back to their imagination and the safety it provides. -

COVID-19 Inside Arkansas Prisons: The Past and Future
The covid pandemic has shown the world, especially the US, how suceptible certain populaations are to any communicable disease. The virus has hit hard in places where social distancing is at best difficult. Places like elder care facilities, meat packing plants, and prisons. In the final installment of her three part series, covering covid inside Arkansas State prisons, NPR reporter Anna Stitt, looks at the history and future of the Arkansas prison system. Much of her focus has been on the Cummins Unit. A prison opened in 1902 and named after one of the plantations who formerly owned the land. Upon opening and through present day the prison operates a farm that is worked by inmates for no pay. They were still farming cotton, with guards on horseback, holding rifles, in the 1990's. An image that looks like it could have been taken one hundred years ago. This prison has been part of numerous scandals and appears to be in the midst of one today. When the NAACP Legal Defense Fund sued to gain early release for the medically vulnerable the judge denied the request saying there wasn't sufficient proof that the Corrections Department was mishandling the pandemic. Inmates report being denied testing even once exposed to the virus. When inmates attourney's requested security footage the Department of Corrections filed a motion to block the request but the judge allowed the attorney's to see the footage. The treatment of inmates has resulted in their families and friends staging a protest outside the Arkansas Governor's Mansion on May 16th and a coalition of organizations delivering demands to the governor on June 1st. Petition to Change a Park's Name During the Pandemic
Even though the pandemic still lingers, the world is pressing on to combat other issues. The recent protests have reawoken the subject of racism in America. I believe the pandemic has afforded us with a unique situation where the nation has more time to discuss this issue at large. Plus, a lot more people have participated in those protests because they are either working from home or have lost their jobs, unfortunately. With all this additional time, people have sought to make changes to promote a more welcoming environment for the black community in many towns and cities. Thousands of residents in Wilmington, NC, have already begun a petition to make such a change. One of the city's most popular parks was named after Hugh MacRae. This man co-lead the plan to overthrow Wilmington's local government. While doing this, his group also demolished a black-owned newspaper office and killed/injured many African Americans. This event became notoriously known as the 1898 Wilmington Massacre. Over 8,000 people have already signed a petition to change the park's name. An interview by WECT News I watched today really struck me. The woman, who was a peaceful protester, had been asked why she thought changing the name of the park was necessary. She told the news anchor that "'I grew up there, I had birthday parties there, and it was always a terrible reminder of the history of Wilmington and having that park, a public park be named after somebody of such vile reputation is shocking and it’s a shame that although Wilmington acknowledged its history it does not do more and be more proactive to make a change.'" The legacy that this man and his mob caused has continued to negatively affect the black community in Wilmington. Renaming that park could lead to a reconciliation of the past in the present day. The reintroduction of the issue of racism and Black Lives Matter might not have been as impactful as it was if the pandemic had not occurred in the first place. Having people at home watching TV (especially the news), helped garnered the attention it needed to begin the movement again. -

Nebraska National Guard Soldiers Test Positive for COVID-19 Following Protests
A number of Nebraska National Guard soldiers have tested positive for COVID-19 following missions to assist law enforcement amid protests in Omaha and Lincoln. None of the affected soldiers have been hospitalized and all are isolating in their homes. Protests have flared across the country following the death of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer, while in custody. Many of the protests have individuals packed tightly in large groups, many not wearing masks or following other recommended guidelines to slow the spread of the virus. -

'Ford government directive to open child care centres won't work': Public Statement from Kathleen Wynne
An public statement shared on Facebook by Kathleen Wynne and then by various childcare professionals and sympathetic parties. It was retrieved from the Facebook page of a Early Childhood Educator. Kathleen Wynne, a member of Provincial Parliament, former Premier of Ontario, and a former teacher, wrote this in response to action taken by Premier of the province of Ontario, Doug Ford and the Provincial Minister of Education, and Conservative government in the province, that they will reopen all childcare centres in Ontario effective Friday June 11, 2020 as part of their tiered 'reopening' of the province from Covid-19 restrictions. It is Ms. Wynne's opinion that centres are being provided with insufficient time and resources to do so safely for staff and children. -

Drone Book Drop
Montgomery County Public Schools in Virginia is one of the most diverse school districts in VA. They are often looking for new ways to reach their diverse student population. They were one of the first districts on the east coast to close when COVID-19 hit. They were able to do this because all of their students already have devices in their hands every day. They repurposed bus drivers to deliver lunches, pick up student devices for tech work, and to redistribute student devices when they were fixed and ready to go. Now, as they look into an uncertain fall semester they have teamed up with a tech organization to drop books to students via drones. While educators understand the important role that technology can play in the learning process it's important to remember that reading books is priceless. -

No Iowa State Fair for the First Time Since WWII
After two consecutive years with record attendance, the momentum of the Iowa State Fair has come to a screeching halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For the first time since WWII there will be no Iowa State Fair, one of the largest in the country and the second largest in the Midwest. The Iowa State Fair has only been cancelled a total of 5 times in its 166-years history and was even held during the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic.
