Spend time doing what matters to you most.
During the COVID-19 pandemic I have had to surmount multiple extremely challenging situations that were only made even more difficult by the pandemic, including the death of my last grandparent. As someone with pre-existing conditions, I usually have to be very careful about not just protecting myself when I leave my house in Chandler, Arizona, but making sure I don't spread any disease to my family. When I got the news that my Grandmother probably didn't have much time left due to her cancer, it was extremely distressing for several reasons. The main reason was the fact that I was losing my grandmother, but one factor that was just as, if not more distressing, was the question of how to be able to best safely spend time with her. After a long discussion with my family, I made it clear that just being on video chat or on the phone with my grandmother was not enough; I wanted to find a way to travel to her house in Kansas, and physically be there for her. It was not an easy decision to make, especially when one takes into account that my method of transportation was to fly, which made me very nervous as someone with pre-existing conditions. Fortunately, I was able to take a safe flight to Kansas, but I was shocked to find family visiting my grandmother from out of state that not only refused to wear masks around her, even though she had virtually no immune system left. Despite such stressful conditions, I was able to spend a week with my grandmother just before she passed away, even though COVID-19 made it very hard. The fact that I was able to do such a thing is striking to me, especially when compared to the vast amount of people around the world who aren't able to spend time with loved ones infected with COVID-19 before they pass away. Looking back, I am very lucky I did not get sick, and I was even more lucky that flights were beginning to become regularly available again after they had been shut down earlier in the year. Most of all, I feel very grateful that I was able to spend time with my grandmother, especially when so many people are dying alone all over the world, leaving families distraught, and without closure. -

Justin Trudeau, Canadian Prime Minister (PM), warns against 'internment camp' disinformation
In this clip, Canada's PM Justin Trudeau warns about "internment camp" disinformation. Far-right conservative conspiracy theorists misinterpreted information from the federal government, which they thought was planning to put those who did not abide by COVID rules and regulations into internment camps. -

Making Halloween Ornaments
Since we can't go out and celebrate Halloween this year, we made Halloween ornaments to make October feel a little more festive. We worked on them throughout October so they would be done by Halloween, that way we could display them. Each one is cross-stitch done of perforated paper and doing one took about a week. My mom and I each did one and my older sister did two -

The New Normal for Kids
This is my great niece and her classmates at pre-school in Boston. They are busy playing with each other and are creating and building something wonderful together. They don’t even notice that they are wearing masks. I guess you could say that this is a snapshot of the pandemic through the eyes of children. They are so adaptable that they never even notice the annoyance masks can be to adults. In other words, if we all took a page from their playbooks, the world would be in a much better place right now. I am sure that when at home there are no masks, but in public, children seem to have no issue in protecting both themselves and their friends. -

masks
I saw this on my Facebook thread the other day and thought it was a funny take on masks and those who refuse to wear them. The cartoon shines a light on the argument about mask and peoples "right" not to wear them. I try to be objective and see situations from different angles but in the mask argument I am dumbfounded by those who refuse to wear them because they feel like its an infringement on their constitutional rights. This country has become so divided because of politics that something as simple as wearing a mask to slow the spread of COVID has become politicized. -

The Legendary Rebel Lounge will become a Cafe during the Covid-19 Pandemic
This is an example of businesses that cannot realistically enforce Covid-19 protocols having to adapt. Music venues across the world have had to either adapt, wait it out, or shut their doors. The owner of the Rebel Lounge is part of the National Independent Venue Association leading the #SaveOurStages campaign. -

Canning lid and jar shortage of 2020
I can wholly relate to this article. First the shortages of many items such as hand sanitizers, toilet paper, and food in the first few weeks of the pandemic. But after this summer's growing season, I found myself with a lot of vegetables to can and no jars and/or lids in my local stores. I did not keep extra on hand nor did I think to get any until it was time to can. I did find some in Louisville on websites, but I refused to travel there since the numbers were very high. I eventually ordered some with no guarantee it would arrive before my vegetables went bad. But, in the meantime, I would check the stores in hopes a shipment came in before my online orders arrived. My vegetables and fruits needed to be canned or a whole season would be lost for what I could not freeze. I know it sounds silly to some people and the least of worries for others but for me, it was almost a half a year effort. It was food for my family for the next coming months. Next year this will be a funny story but for now, I will add this to my “The Year of 2020” list. I know many people will not see the humor in this but who knew canning lids and jars would be such a hot item. But it in a way does make sense since we were forced to stay home and be creative with our time until we reopened as a society. -

CDC Expands Definition of "Close Contact"
The CDC expanded its definition of "close contact." The article states, "The CDC had previously defined a “close contact” as someone who spent at least 15 consecutive minutes within six feet of a confirmed coronavirus case. The updated guidance, which health departments rely on to conduct contact tracing, now defines a close contact as someone who was within six feet of an infected individual for a total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period, according to a CDC statement Wednesday." -

Meanwhile in Ohio
Scrolling through Facebook I came across this on my feed. A home in Ohio has been decorated for Halloween COVID style. I thought this was a hilarious way to showcase how COVID has affected every aspect of our lives. I love seeing the humor during this time when we need it most. It looks like the biggest and scariest skeleton is playing dodgeball with COVID balls. I’m not sure which skeleton I loved most, the one with the Lysol or the one with the toilet paper. -

COVID Graduation
Here’s a photo of my cousin I posted on Instagram. She just finished nursing school in Mexico. She’s a single mom, has a full time job and is graduating with honors today. I’m so happy for her finally living her dream. Like many around the world, COVID has affected her graduation. -
