In addition to COVID-19, 2020 was an historic year for civil rights movements like Black Lives Matter. Yet, because they take place in the same year, COVID certainly affected how protests were organised. This post focuses on the murder of Black and Indigenous Canadians, and the image of the one protester surrounded by riot police is evocative on its own. But the image is even more powerful, because the protester is wearing a mask. It makes the post eerie and haunting, and it reminds people how these historical events interact and intertwine with one another.
