Here in Arizona, salons and barbers were initially designated as "essential services," but the day before all the members of our family were scheduled to have haircuts, they were ordered to close. This has left us with long unruly hair. Eli, shown here, has been growing his hair out, but it's never been this long. He now has a "man bun," for which we endlessly tease (though he wears it as a point of honor.). This question about what is essential and what is not, as well as how we handle such simple grooming as hairstyle have taken new meaning for us during the pandemic.

As an empty nester couple at retirement age, with certain underlying health issues, our main concern is not our jobs,or cash flow, but rather the future of our children and grandchildren.
While they are close, we are separated and isolated from them
and this is very hard to accept, especially with no specific end in sight.

With the stay-at-home order and school closures in effect, we see more children and youth playing outside. A popular activity in our neighborhood in South Tempe is to make chalk drawings on driveways. At this house, the kids chalked out their message to stay home and stay safe (along with an Easter egg).

This house displays two local responses to Covid-19. In the upper right window is a display of construction-paper hearts with a thank-you note to all people exposed to the virus as part their daily jobs, including health care workers, delivery drivers, grocery store clerks, and others whose work is deemed essential. In the bottom right window is a teddy bear. This is part of a "find-the-teddy-bear" game which has arisen as desperate parents try to find ways to amuse their children while schools and workplaces are closed and in-person socializing is discouraged. The game, designed for young children, is to walk the neighborhood and try to find teddy bears (or sometimes other stuffed animals) sitting in the neighbors' windows.

This is a picture of a popular outdoor community gathering space in front of Weaver St. Market, a local co-op grocery, in Carrboro, NC. On any other beautiful Saturday morning, the tables pictured here would be crowded with people -- visiting, eating, drinking, working. Children would be running around, people would be walking by on the way to the nearby farmers' market. This is one of the busiest central gathering spots in Carrboro -- a small village adjoining Chapel Hill, NC, the home of the University of North Carolina. To see it vacant on what was a gorgeous, warm, spring Saturday is a breathtaking reminder of what coronavirus and its associated stay-at-home orders are doing to our beloved town and our lives together.

This image is part of a series exploring the role of language, typography, and presentation in informing the larger public. The rainbow sign is part of a movement in my community (and many others on LI) to engage children as they go on walks with their family. Businesses and families alike have drawn rainbows and put them in their windows so that kids who are out playing can count how many rainbows they find while on a walk/bike ride and try to find new rainbows the next day!

Chalk messages on a green way path. For miles this greenway path to park and nature area had sporadic messages through out with motivational and comforting sayings. I had noticed children going out to the path and leaving these messages for all to see. It was nice to read these things and know that while practicing safe social distancing not engaging in close conversation with other while on walks that others can communicate their feelings and connecting with others using only a few words.

Thank you for your unwavering support of our FREE Grab-and-Go Meals Program during school closures. So far, we have served more than 50,000 student meals across all locations to children 18 and under in our communities. We thank all our amazing nutrition services employees and volunteers for feeding those children/teens in our community!
Due to health and safety guidelines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Tempe Elementary School District leadership, we would like to share this important update regarding changes in the distribution of meals and changes in time to our grab-and-go schedule.
Beginning Monday, April 6, we will no longer be serving meals at Thew and Wood. Our five remaining feeding locations will still be serving meals between the hours of 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. only. You will be able to pick up both breakfast and lunch during this time.

It captures the feeling of my PA suburb currently; because kids are out of schools, most parents are working from home, and all social gatherings are cancelled, many families are spending time together outside. Some written messages we saw include "Keep going everything will come to you at the perfect time!" "Have an online Netflix party!" "Wash your hands!" and "We will get through this together!"

My son's school closed on Monday. He is a high energy kid and copes better when he knows what the day holds. So I devised a schedule for us where he can continue to learn whilst school is closed.
We are finding that having a schedule is really helping with our daily life. It is meant to be flexible and serves more of a touchstone for when things get difficult throughout the day.
Many people are saying that time in isolation is a great opportunity to learn an instrument or language, master a hobby or really relax - but those of us with children don't have that luxury.
