During this Covid-19 pandemic, we’ve learnt that some people might be more vulnerable than others. Who is high risk? I am! A quick google search shows that a person taking high doses of steroids or immunosuppressant medication can be considered as clinically extremely vulnerable. I take both. The fear is real. It has always been here but now I need to be even more careful. The lines are blurred; how ill do I need to feel before deciding that I need to go to the hospital, an incubator for all kinds of infections and an even more potential risk in catching the deadly virus? As much as the hospital is the solution, it might as well be death welcoming me with arms open.
The number of infected persons has rocketing at a time, and I could not help falling sick despite not having gone out a single time during the 3-month lockdown. It was finally time to go there, the hospital! I went armed to the teeth with my mask, gloves, and a sanitiser, cautious but still anxious, and I was met with an eerily almost empty building. The place which was usually buzzing with activity at all times of the day only had a handful of doctors and nurses but no patients! It seemed like everyone had respected the lockdown measures to the letter. I was relieved and I was cared for with the staff following all precautionary measures. In a measure of solidarity, the people had decided to respect the lockdown rules to avoid the spread of the virus and had in unthinkingly doing so, potentially saved the health of many vulnerable patients. I felt safe and I still do. Caring for others is after all a social responsibility and an expression of what it means to be human and humane.

Even though we were experiencing quarantine, many people go on the street to protest. However, some people are taking advantage of this. Although these stores were being robbed, the owners or influencers showed an exceptional understanding of the current situation and kept promote and support the Riot and protest for George Floyd.

On March 05, Wuhan University Renmin Hospital, an 87-year-old COVID-19 patient saw the sunset with a young doctor. The uploaded picture is African Americans waiting in line for distributions of food and mask in New York. It is just one of the many pictures and art forms describing the disproportions effects of COVID-19 on communities of color. It has been stated that people of color are becoming infected and dying of COVID-19 at high rates than those that are white. It is important to be made aware of this as it could be the result of systematic racism that is embedded in the access to healthcare and resources as well as the living conditions compared to white folks.

My mom and I went out for a ride to just see the outside world. We drove to Laguna Beach, looking at all of the other cars that apparently had the same idea. The beaches were empty, lined with a plastic orange mesh fence and social distancing instructions “Stay 6 ft apart”. Sometimes it was eerie to see nobody else outside. The beach is a place my family likes to go to have fun, but like many of our other pastimes, we can’t do them anymore. We like to joke that eating is the only activity we can do during quarantine.

In the days following the death of George Floyd, the San Francisco Bay Area erupted with protests. San Jose and Oakland were two of the first cities in which large groups of protestors took to the streets. Peaceful protestors were met with police in riot gear and risked the threat of tear gas or arrest. Protests intensified as people moved to block local freeways, like Interstate 880 in Oakland. In the aftermath of the protests in San Jose and Oakland, protests spread across the entire Bay Area. Defying local COVID-19 shelter in place ordinances, nearly every city and town in the area held a protest during the week that followed.

I had an internship last year in New york. It's a crowded city. When I got off from work, I have to walk really fast, because if I walk slower than others, there even some bankers would push me to walk forward. They are not intended to do so, just because there are many people get off work during that time. And it's usually a noisy and energetic street. However, during the Covid19 period,it became a quiet street, almost nobody on the street. Also, people on the street would wear masks. I think it's a big change for this street and really shocked my mind.

Photographer, Richard Grant, captured a photo of a child sitting atop their father's shoulders during the Long Beach, California protests that followed George Floyd's death. It appears as if the cops in the photograph are pointing a rubber bullet gun directly at the father and child. The photographer recently posted the unedited photograph to Instagram and a caption stating that the photograph is not fake and that he does not believer the officer was intentionally or directly pointing the gun at the father and child. This statement by Richard Grant combats one of the reasons that perhaps the photograph went viral in the first place. Namely, that the officer was deliberately pointing the gun directly at the child. "First thing the photo is not fake. It is not Photoshopped. What I saw through the viewfinder is what is here. There was color correction and cropping so it could look better on Instagram when I posted it. I have stated before that I do not believe in the 1/500th of a second that the picture was made in that the officer was aiming at the man with the child. This is an uncropped photo with no color correction. I used a 24 -70mm lens at 70mm and f 3.5." Deliberate or not, the photograph reminds us to stop and think about the impact the events of 2020 are having on our children today and in the future.

Both closures impacted my ability to visit family members and while this was difficult, I understood the importance of introducing these measures given the circumstances of the pandemic. And additionally, appreciated that in response to these changes, the facilities introduced various means of staying connected with loved ones.

This meme in particular points out some of the controversial media images like La Paisana Jacinta that embody and make light of race and class differences.
