5 yo Maya Peralta-Kole plays "Rock, paper, scissors," through the fence with her neighbor and classmate from Scales Technology Academy. Though, it's a bit hard to play without a clear line of site. After calling "Rock, paper, scissors," the girls ask each other what they picked. The first to answer that question is usually the first to lose.

The South City area of Saint Louis is a diverse, tight-knit community. It only makes sense that residents would go out of their way to assist each other during this difficult time. The residents of this home near the intersection of Arsenal St. and Gravois Rd. advertised resources in chalk writing on the exterior of the house, including a LinkTree website, toll-free helpline, and email account dedicated to helping those in need and connecting volunteers with service opportunities. There are also children’s chalk drawings of flowers and a rainbow on the exterior and of a rainbow and a pot of gold taped to the window. #DePaulHST391

Luckily my 5 yo continues to lead a fairly normal life. Her screen time is usually limited to when her brother naps, (about 2 hrs. a day), and she is happy to spend the rest of the day playing, painting, and singing. Occasionally, she does talk about missing school, her friends, and her nana in Michigan, but we can usually patch over the pain with a video call.

It's hard to keep an active 1 yo entertained when the parks are closed, swim class was canceled, and I can't even take him to the supermarket for a light distraction. So, I caved. I broke down after watching him cry and say "I want," repeatedly while stretching his hands towards his sister's paints and paintbrushes. On Friday night, I figured, sure it's going to be a mess, and it might be a disaster, but provided he doesn't eat it, it's harmless.

One thing that is overlooked during times like this are the children who come from broken, bad, non-functioning homes. As a school librarian, I celebrated the month+ off but dreaded the prospect of hunger and abuse the majority of my students at a Title 1, poverty stricken school would face. Our parish is currently scrambling to make sure there is food and learning access for our students, but I am afraid that my students, PreK-2nd grade, will slip through the cracks. And who knows where they will end up.

Due to COVID-19, my family and I have tried to find more ways to hang out together at home. Before the outbreak, we usually visited local stores, movie theaters, and restaurants each week. However, since COVID-19 has forced us to stay home, we have been trying to find things to do together that do not involve going out. As a group, we have been playing video and board games, watching TV and movies, eating dinner as a family, cleaning the house, and walking our dog. Recently, for one of our game nights, we decided to play a new game called “Escape the Room: Mystery at the Stargazer’s Manor”. This game is an ‘at-home’ escape room. My family and I love going to escape rooms, so we thought this would be a fun alternative to try during COVID-19. My family was able to successfully escape and finish the game in the allotted time. We really enjoyed playing this game because it allowed us to participate in one of our favorite activities, without leaving our house.

The article disscusses how this church in texas did easter during this pandemic and how they wished they could gather like they usually do. The author also talks about how families gathered on zoom but it is not the same and that is making people sad because they are people who do not have access to the internet. Finally the priest talks about how he is upset they cannot meet but advises other churches to stay home and wait till it gets better.

While nursing homes play an integral role in the medical care for many elderly individuals, they also present a significant amount of risk during the time of COVID-19. The CDC has identified as those who are most at-risk for infection as people over 65, the immunocompromised, and residents at long-term care facilities. My mom, as the Senior Director of Resident Services, has often described her fear that one of her nurses, CNAs, or residents will contract COVID-19. In order to minimize risk, she relies on reminding nursing home staff and residents of the merits of practicing preventative care. These IDPH infographics provide helpful information to prevent the spread of the virus within a high risk community so that both workers and residents can stay as healthy as can be.

Here in Arizona, salons and barbers were initially designated as "essential services," but the day before all the members of our family were scheduled to have haircuts, they were ordered to close. This has left us with long unruly hair. Eli, shown here, has been growing his hair out, but it's never been this long. He now has a "man bun," for which we endlessly tease (though he wears it as a point of honor.). This question about what is essential and what is not, as well as how we handle such simple grooming as hairstyle have taken new meaning for us during the pandemic.

During the epidemic, our physical education classes became more efficient and healthier. In the school's physical education class, we only do free activities. We can do whatever exercises we want. This led to the inertia of some students. Now, everyone concentrates on the online class. We exercise more and have become healthier and stronger.

The article is about how Covid-19 has affected the religious burial practices of those who died from infection in the Middle East. Attention focuses on the contrasting differences between how the infected bodies were handled, where they were layed to rest, and traditional preparational practices that were foregone during the early stages of the Pandemic due to the lack of knowledge and fear about the virus itself, resulting in discord between deeply religious family members of the deceased and government/health officials.

This house displays two local responses to Covid-19. In the upper right window is a display of construction-paper hearts with a thank-you note to all people exposed to the virus as part their daily jobs, including health care workers, delivery drivers, grocery store clerks, and others whose work is deemed essential. In the bottom right window is a teddy bear. This is part of a "find-the-teddy-bear" game which has arisen as desperate parents try to find ways to amuse their children while schools and workplaces are closed and in-person socializing is discouraged. The game, designed for young children, is to walk the neighborhood and try to find teddy bears (or sometimes other stuffed animals) sitting in the neighbors' windows.

This is a picture of a popular outdoor community gathering space in front of Weaver St. Market, a local co-op grocery, in Carrboro, NC. On any other beautiful Saturday morning, the tables pictured here would be crowded with people -- visiting, eating, drinking, working. Children would be running around, people would be walking by on the way to the nearby farmers' market. This is one of the busiest central gathering spots in Carrboro -- a small village adjoining Chapel Hill, NC, the home of the University of North Carolina. To see it vacant on what was a gorgeous, warm, spring Saturday is a breathtaking reminder of what coronavirus and its associated stay-at-home orders are doing to our beloved town and our lives together.

This image is part of a series exploring the role of language, typography, and presentation in informing the larger public. The rainbow sign is part of a movement in my community (and many others on LI) to engage children as they go on walks with their family. Businesses and families alike have drawn rainbows and put them in their windows so that kids who are out playing can count how many rainbows they find while on a walk/bike ride and try to find new rainbows the next day!
