Effect on Me and My Family

I’m writing this story on April 3rd 2020, 5 days from my birthday. Covid- 19 has severely impacted millions of people's lives in ways that many thought wouldn’t happen in their lifetime. The virus has already personally affected me and my family in a lot more ways that I thought it would. In all honesty, I was one of those people that didn’t take the virus seriously at first. But as more and more cases started to be reported, I realized how bad it was getting. Now, it makes me upset that even at this moment there are still people who aren’t taking the virus seriously and saying that the flu is more dangerous which is simply not true.

The first way that the virus affected me was the move to online school and moving back to my house with my parents. The move was the decision of my parents thinking that it would be safer if I was at home rather than in Arizona and I would have food to eat as well. The switch to online school has been rough. Many people are complaining about how this isn’t what they paid for and I agree. This isn’t the same level of schooling that I expected from paying my tuition but it is what it is. There isn’t much that can be done at this point other than listening to what the government tells us. Quarantine is slowly making me insane. Being cooped up in my house is not great for my mental health. I live off of social interactions so this has been a new challenge for me. I also love going to concerts. All the concerts that I had planned on going this year have been canceled or rescheduled. This makes me almost want to cry because these concerts were my happy place, a place where I could forget all worries and just vibe. Lastly, I can’t even celebrate my birthday with my friends.

The virus has impacted my family in the same way that many have been impacted. By bringing me back from Arizona, it puts them at risk of getting the virus because I had to go through the airport and sit on a plane. My dad also has the risk of losing his job due to this virus. Thousands of people have already lost their jobs due to the coronavirus and thousands are going to. The economy is tanked and there is a huge possibility for another depression.

The worst impact has been the amount of racism that has stemmed from this virus. Me and my family are of asian descent, and the amount of racism that I’ve seen regarding this is appalling. Asians are getting attacked just because the virus happened to come out of China. I personally have seen racism with my own eyes as there was some that was directed to me. I get asked if I eat bat soup, or if my family eats bat soup, things like that. Some people think it’s a joke but it’s really not funny.

The virus has impacted millions of people already. This is how the virus has personally affected me and my family.
