Text (Omeka Classic)

Today marks the twentieth day since South Carolina's governor announced the state was going to commence a stay-at-home order. South Carolina was one of the last states in the U.S. to mandate a shelter-in-place. Conversely, South Carolina was the second state to reopen their beaches as of April 20th. Retail is also allowed to reopen their stores. I believe it is too early for public places to open back up and this could potentially lead to the further spread of COVID-19 cases. Other states, like New York and New Jersey, are extending their stay-at-home mandates and residents are required to wear masks whenever leaving their homes. Granted, South Carolina does not have nearly as many cases as other states, but people will not be practicing social distancing. Personally, I have not been practicing social distancing because it is hard not continuing a normal life. I am not afraid of contracting the coronavirus but I am concerned about possibly being a carrier of the virus and spreading it to others. I have been taking sanitary precautions to lower my chances of getting sick. I did not expect for quarantine mandates to last for so long. In February, I thought everything would have resumed to normal by May. The way conditions are now, I project life will not return completely to normal until June. Today, the United States surpassed over a million cases on COVID-19. Around the world there are over three million cases of the virus in total. However, it was released that the pandemic peaked last week, hopefully we are successful in containing the virus and prevent it from escalating for a second time. I plan to remain in South Carolina until conditions around the U.S. improve. It is currently the last week of online university classes. The towns of Conway and Myrtle Beach feel like a ghost town now. Two mornings ago I decided to catch the sunrise in Myrtle Beach. It was refreshing doing something that I was not able to do for two weeks, due to the closed beaches. In the unlikelihood that Gov. McMaster extends any mandates, I think I would consider returning home.
