Text (Omeka Classic)

I move through another lockdown routine, making a cup of warm tea, and move to settle in front of my computer inside my silent room. I put in my earphones, turn on some shuffled music, and let its rhythm and tune carry me into a space of working concentration. An interlude of protection from the anxiety, frustration, fear, and worry that thrives in this unfolding uncertain, difficult, and uneasy world.

A world increasingly laid bare of the wide and deep injustices, inequality, privileges, and exploitations that greedily fuel its 'normalcy' and strangle-holds that force it together. I sip my tea and lets its soothing orange taste briefly hold me away from the world beyond my room window. I close my eyes, calm my racing thoughts and feelings, exhale, and remind myself again that this is not normal. I am not living in a normal time. This is extraordinary living history and its okay to not be feeling or thinking normally. It's okay to be not okay and I am okay with that. I open my eyes, staring at my computer screen and tap away as usual.

But this is a new 'usual'. A new 'usual' for a 'new' world. A world that demands involved kindness, self-compassion, and gratitude toward ourselves and each other. I finally pause my tapping, slowly stand up and stretch while moving around my room trying to recapture my attention. This new world is standing up and stretching us, recapturing our attention on what actually matters. I pick up my cup of tea and determinedly stare out my window, my whole being reaching out to connect with and cheer on family, friends, and those brave and amazing humans all fighting to protect and keep us safe. The protectors of our hopes. I take a long sip my tea, in this brave new world.

Bravery will get us through this. Which we will. And when we do, I like to believe that we will strive and fight to live in a braver, kinder, gentler, and compassionate world that is being in fought for by many on countless fronts. I slowly my finish tea and move to make myself a cup of coffee. The world carries, our individual and collective choices and power will determine what we make from it next. We will think about it, imagine it, believe it, and then act upon it.
