Text (Omeka Classic)

'Be careful what you wish for, it might just come true' is something I heard a lot as a kid and was always confused by. It sounded so negative. Why wouldn't you want your wish to come true? Oh, how I miss being a child! To know nothing but your own whims and imagination. But childhood is fleeting and now I'm a senior in high school. I should have heeded those words from my childhood. Wishes have consequences; when I didn't get to go back to high school for the last time I sat in my room, numb. My friends and I had all been wishing, whining, and praying.
I'm just so done, I just want it to be over!
I'm so ready for college.
I'm so tired, I just want to sleep all the time.
I'm so sick of all this work I don't like. I want to do the stuff I want to do.
I wish I had more time to myself.
Well, our wishes had been granted but by the cruel genie of life. School stopped. We got to sleep in as much as we wanted. Got to do whatever we wanted. We got time. But at what cost? We can't leave out houses for months. A global pandemic, people dying. No friends, no more college visits, not more youth group. Graduation postponed and limited. I have no idea about prom. I don't even know If I will get to move into my dorm in the fall.
Now I know this pandemic isn't the fault of lamenting high school seniors, and that lots of others have it worse. However, I'm choosing to take this as the first big lesson life is teaching me. Try and find the little bits of joy in the everyday, even if you are sick of the everyday. Treasure every moment of something fleeting. Use your time wisely and most importantly always be kind. This page of history is hard for us now, but hopefully, its shaping use to build a better tomorrow, next week, next month, and next year. Lots of people are hurting and upset right now, but this has taught me that sometimes you cry your tears, make your peace, and keep doing the best with what you got.
